> ## 📝 Summary
> - **What happened.** The Wired Word, a weekly adult Sunday school curriculum published by Communication Resources, builds its lesson for the week of October 11, 2026 on the reported failed execution of Christa Pike in Tennessee. Per the email, the state administered two doses of pentobarbital on Wednesday, September 30, and Pike, 50, survived and is conscious and handcuffed to a hospital bed (¶7). Gov. Bill Lee then suspended all other Tennessee executions and ordered an independent review (¶12). The email went to subscribers dated 2026-10-09, and a subscriber requested the topic (¶2).
> - **The claim.** The lesson doesn't argue a verdict on capital punishment. It says the full issue needs more time than one class allows and narrows the focus to how faith speaks to both a victim's family and an offender (¶34). Its scripture section, discussion prompts and closing prayer lean toward mercy, while one long uncommented list (¶92 to ¶159) gathers texts from both sides of the debate.
> - **Why it matters.** Capital punishment is a live question with real people attached: Colleen Slemmer, murdered at 19 (¶81); her mother, May Martinez, who wants Pike to feel the pain her daughter felt (¶9); Pike herself, whose childhood abuse the lesson describes at length (¶17); and the class members, some of whom may carry grief from violent crime or from the justice system. A curriculum that handles all of these at once is doing hard pastoral work in one hour.
> - **Who's affected.** The Slemmer family; Pike and her attorneys (Randy Spivey, Stephen Ferrell); Tennessee officials (Gov. Lee, Sen. Marsha Blackburn); the Catholic, Episcopal and Lutheran bishops who asked for commutation (¶19); advocates Jennifer Escue and Barbara Holden Nixon (¶16); op-ed writer Sarah L. Bailey, herself the mother of a murder victim (¶81); and the teachers and class members who will use the lesson on October 11.
> - **Risks and tradeoffs.** The four focal passages (Genesis 4, 2 Samuel 11 to 12, John 8, Luke 23) each tilt toward mercy or against vengeance, and the texts most often cited for the death penalty (Genesis 9:6, Exodus 21:12, Numbers 35:16-21, Romans 13:1-4) appear only as bare references in the closing list. Several passages get applied past their original setting: a private blood feud (Genesis 4), a divine pardon (2 Samuel 12), and a religious trap with no trial (John 8) are read toward a modern state's judicial killing. The lesson also never cites Luke 23:39-43, the criminal executed beside Jesus, which speaks directly to its own Big Question 5.
> - **Bottom line.** A careful, pastorally aware lesson that states its narrowed scope honestly and gives the victim's mother and a senator who favors execution their own words. Its interpretive weight sits on the mercy side. A teacher who wants a fair room should bring Genesis 9:6 and Romans 13:1-4 forward from the list and add Luke 23:39-43.
> ## 📖 Main content
> - **The genre.** The Wired Word is a lesson plan with a news hook, sold to churches by subscription. Its sections repeat weekly: In the News, Applying the News Story, The Big Questions, Confronting the News With Scripture and Hope, For Further Discussion, Responding to the News, and Prayer. This issue follows that template exactly (¶6, ¶33, ¶35, ¶41, ¶71, ¶86, ¶161).
> - **The news story (¶7 to ¶19).** Tennessee tried and failed to execute Christa Pike on September 30 with two doses of pentobarbital. Her attorney had warned that her thrombocytosis, a blood-clotting disorder, would make lethal injection agonizing, and the state refused her request to die by hanging (¶8). Pike was sentenced to death in 1996 for murdering classmate Colleen Slemmer with Tadaryl Shipp and Shadolla Peterson, and spent 30 years on death row, 27 in solitary confinement (¶10). The email adds a Pew figure (68% of Americans see the death penalty as morally justified for murder, ¶11), a Death Penalty Information Center figure crediting Amherst professor Austin Sarat with counting 75 botched lethal injections between 1982 and 2010 (¶12), Sen. Blackburn's call to "bring back the electric chair" (¶13), an op-ed on adverse childhood experiences (¶14 to ¶16), a long account of Pike's abuse and mental illness (¶17), Pike's past acceptance of responsibility (¶18), and the bishops' commutation request (¶19).
> - **The voices the lesson gives space to.** For execution or for Pike's suffering: May Martinez (¶9) and Sen. Blackburn (¶13), plus the Pew figure. Against execution or for mercy: the bishops (¶19), TWW team members Bill Tammeus (¶78) and Frank Ramirez (¶84), Sarah L. Bailey (¶81 to ¶82), the Church of Sweden prayer (¶85), Gandalf (¶89), team member Mary Sells (¶90) and the closing prayer (¶162). The pro-execution voices appear as news quotes; no theological argument for the death penalty is quoted. That's a balance observation, not a charge: the lesson's stated focus (¶34) is victims and offenders, not the policy debate.
> - **Four scripture movements.** Each pairs a quoted passage with a short commentary.
> - *Genesis 4:13-16 (context 4:1-16).* Cain fears being killed; God marks him so no one will. The commentary reads the mark as a warning against private vendetta, then follows violence forward to Lamech in Genesis 4:23-24 (¶48 to ¶50).
> - *2 Samuel 11:14-17 (context 11:1-27).* David orders Uriah placed where he'll die. The commentary says the law of Moses called for David's death, but his infant son died instead and his family bore consequences for life, citing 2 Samuel 12:13-23 (¶56 to ¶58).
> - *John 8:7-11 (context 8:1-11).* "Let anyone among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone." The commentary notes adultery was a capital offense under Mosaic law and that the leaders wanted Jesus to endorse stoning (¶64).
> - *Luke 23:23-25 (context 23:13-25).* The crowd demands crucifixion and Pilate releases Barabbas, "a murderer and insurrectionist" (Mark 15:6-7), while Pilate and
Dear Class Members,

**Botched Execution Attempt Raises Questions About Capital Punishment**
***The Wired Word*** **for the Week of October 11, 2026**
**In the News**
On Wednesday, September 30, the state of Tennessee tried and failed to execute Christa Pike by administering two doses of pentobarbital. Pike, 50, is now conscious and speaking, handcuffed to her hospital bed.
Pike's attorney Randy Spivey had warned the state that using lethal injection would cause his client, who has thrombocytosis, a blood-clotting disorder, "to suffer an agonizing death." The state denied Pike's request that she be allowed to die by hanging.
"She was not seeking to delay her execution," attorney Stephen Ferrell said the next day. "She was seeking to have that execution performed humanely and as quickly and as painlessly as possible." Her victim's mother, May Martinez, told reporters, "I would feel better that she felt the same pain that Colleen did. She did the crime. I think she should pay for it."
In 1996, Pike was sentenced to death for murdering her classmate, Colleen Slemmer, with her then-boyfriend Tadaryl Shipp and their friend Shadolla Peterson. Pike spent 30 years on death row, 27 of those years in solitary confinement.
According to Pew Research, 68% of Americans view the death penalty as morally justified for those convicted of murder.
The Death Penalty Information Center (DPIC) reported that between 1982 and 2010 there were 75 botched injection executions that featured "unanticipated problems" or "unnecessary agony for the prisoner," according to research by Amherst College professor Austin Sarat. In the wake of last month's failed execution attempt, Gov. Bill Lee suspended all other executions in Tennessee and called for a complete, independent review of the state's procedures.
Tennessee Sen. Marsha Blackburn posted on social media: "Christa Pike should have been executed long ago. Now, this botched process is extending the pain for the family of Colleen Slemmer. While there should be a thorough review of what happened and why the process failed, the answer is simple: bring back the electric chair and deliver justice for these victims swiftly."

Pike's brain damage due to fetal alcohol syndrome, undiagnosed and untreated bipolar disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder, and seizures, combined with severe and repeated episodes of sexual abuse and rape beginning at the age of 2, physical abuse and neglect, and failure to hold those who committed crimes against her to account, contributed to her emotional and mental instability, heightened feelings of constant terror and helplessness, and lack of impulse control, that culminated in her participation in the murder of Colleen Slemmer.
In the past, Pike accepted responsibility for her actions, saying there was no excuse for what she did and expressing regret. "If I could take it all back, I would," she said.
Catholic, Episcopal and Lutheran bishops in Tennessee have asked Gov. Lee to commute Pike's death sentence as "an act of mercy," writing in a joint statement that "Nothing ... diminishes the gravity of that crime, the preciousness of Colleen's life, or the legitimate responsibility of the state to hold those who commit violence accountable. Yet accountability need not require another death. We believe every human being bears the image of God and therefore possesses a dignity that even the most grievous sin cannot erase," the bishops added. "We believe in accountability, but we also believe in repentance, redemption, mercy, and the possibility of transformation."

**Applying the News Story**
To thoroughly address an issue as complicated as capital punishment, we would need much more time and space than we have for this lesson. So we've attempted to narrow our focus to consider how our faith can speak to both a victim's family and to an offender who caused harm. Use this lesson as an opportunity to discuss biblical perspectives on mercy, justice and punishment.
**The Big Questions**
1. Why should we be concerned that convicted murderers receive "humane" treatment when, in many cases, their victims suffered greatly?
2. What alternatives are there to punish those who commit heinous crimes?
3. Is it ever humanly possible to simultaneously show mercy and also a just punishment?
4. What responsibility for an adult's criminal behavior does society have when it ignored and failed to protect the child in crisis who grew up to become that person who violated the law?
5. Does the use of capital punishment mean that we believe some people are beyond God's redemption? Why or why not?
**Confronting the News With Scripture and Hope**Here are some Bible verses to guide your discussion:
**Genesis 4:13-16***Cain said to the LORD, "My punishment is greater than I can bear! Today you have driven me away from the soil, and I shall be hidden from your face; I shall be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth, and anyone who meets me may kill me." Then the LORD said to him, "Not so! Whoever kills Cain will suffer a sevenfold vengeance." And the LORD put a mark on Cain, so that no one who came upon him would kill him. Then Cain went away from the presence of the LORD and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden.* (For context, read [Genesis 4:1-16](https://u14323725.ct.sendgrid.net/ls/click?upn=u001.kR2s0BHA4IMM0a9cQYZVPIPMr3QdAndcnhgARhLxPRBMJBYCTolkbvW-2F0TosyGzxdxvwvUIbrGNsYJ-2B9LkHJNcF5hEvrXXJXna03SY9jgAIgmQFFVHv5CtScvZsDGV-2BGtrJk_-2FDMt8DmC0b3MPPPEfxHbnxzgfJsbXDNMpwCP9nNwhUmwW6wkyKFLFNgtWOsfoWlqzJWknYznvBlIhQrMvSLcaZdhhbJIKGm-2F5qmCcYPIpJSn2obb9skqJf4MgaypxrLi7oLPa8a7eS7JtzjOXCCX8BHD-2F4cv9wFI-2FUH-2BL75pc25Hbh6RKf8EPZebHASiEu2b1aGXbOqJQ3Dnm6HAk92YmSVqqYpJ-2Bo9f4EnYs50Q4v-2FedarWP-2FyNkje8C0y-2FyCfkwGKjvwsJNTzQ3ubNJUiQ0FbddlKIp3k0naWJIjaiCTJb8iIenh6aMhNeS-2BejmBdTOfFdUtZzrh4S7ZjnafyOwMvhZAls1mkucxZZkMjFxOq-2FZbTTA8vDQd8bo9ho0LvHCXTe7bplXmWWKqpPiIi1gbkJpsqBku1fOLmtARJtemwFzrXITBlppIwpslNRz-2Fstq4iI0bX0-2FMrSQfWrr4Vkq54nq9EuJwM-2FMmOxBaLl3bk-3D).)
God marked Cain to warn anyone not to take the law into their own hands in a vendetta after he murdered his brother. Violence didn't stop there. Lamech, Cain's great-great-great-grandson, killed a young man for striking and wounding him ([Genesis 4:23-24](https://u14323725.ct.sendgrid.net/ls/click?upn=u001.kR2s0BHA4IMM0a9cQYZVPIPMr3QdAndcnhgARhLxPRBMJBYCTolkbvW-2F0TosyGzxdxvwvUIbrGNsYJ-2B9LkHJNdGOgfV-2B-2F1nCea5VsXAbWwHhpHpxGgBlPx6eKCq4qXjRkPgi_-2FDMt8DmC0b3MPPPEfxHbnxzgfJsbXDNMpwCP9nNwhUmwW6wkyKFLFNgtWOsfoWlqzJWknYznvBlIhQrMvSLcaZdhhbJIKGm-2F5qmCcYPIpJSn2obb9skqJf4MgaypxrLi7oLPa8a7eS7JtzjOXCCX8BHD-2F4cv9wFI-2FUH-2BL75pc25Hbh6RKf8EPZebHASiEu2b1aGXbOqJQ3Dnm6HAk92YmSVqqYpJ-2Bo9f4EnYs50Q4v-2FedarWP-2FyNkje8C0y-2FyCfkwGKjvwsJNTzQ3ubNJUiQ0LYd8Dd-2BHqAPtdN-2FK2LNfoJJSLJWpUw6ky-2Fe-2BxKDnLhSTpej8gh8B2Os5bUbZMIvpR0DnDEi07oYzxmXAW78hjy8H9H4l3jXV3nLS6YlpJZxgurgW4iBJ2urp7Yhr8hss0b-2Fgnjih-2FPuCHr82hwA55-2BW6FqCefPIQCnEeqxFp5TCU4-2FOUNIIAK4VMkrx5iwaH-2B3IVYVwxezoohgU0wJF0uo-3D)). He reasoned that if God promised to punish anyone sevenfold who killed Cain (murderer of his brother Abel, who had not harmed him in any way), then God would avenge Lamech seventy times seven if anyone murdered him for killing a man while defending himself.
> **Questions:** What would justice have looked like to Cain and Abel's parents, Adam and Eve? Would killing Cain have eased their pain? Why or why not? How were they life-long victims of Cain's crime against Abel? What shape might mercy take for them? Why did Cain consider God's mercy a punishment (Genesis 4:10-12) worse, perhaps, than capital punishment might have been? What was merciful about God's punishment?
**2 Samuel 11:14-17***In the morning David wrote a letter to Joab and sent it by the hand of Uriah. In the letter he wrote, "Set Uriah in the forefront of the hardest fighting, and then draw back from him, so that he may be struck down and die." As Joab kept watch over the city, he assigned Uriah to the place where he knew there were valiant warriors. The men of the city came out and fought with Joab, and some of the servants of David among the people fell. Uriah the Hittite was killed as well.* (For context, read [2 Samuel 11:1-27](https://u14323725.ct.sendgrid.net/ls/click?upn=u001.kR2s0BHA4IMM0a9cQYZVPIPMr3QdAndcnhgARhLxPRBMJBYCTolkbvW-2F0TosyGzxlvjJW5fipliacJeM-2BZO3IsuytF7U7HP1-2BwA6EvBsyx3LK2G7zTTPG-2BOV8KGni-2BpRlGbO_-2FDMt8DmC0b3MPPPEfxHbnxzgfJsbXDNMpwCP9nNwhUmwW6wkyKFLFNgtWOsfoWlqzJWknYznvBlIhQrMvSLcaZdhhbJIKGm-2F5qmCcYPIpJSn2obb9skqJf4MgaypxrLi7oLPa8a7eS7JtzjOXCCX8BHD-2F4cv9wFI-2FUH-2BL75pc25Hbh6RKf8EPZebHASiEu2b1aGXbOqJQ3Dnm6HAk92YmSVqqYpJ-2Bo9f4EnYs50Q4v-2FedarWP-2FyNkje8C0y-2FyCfkwGKjvwsJNTzQ3ubNJUiQ0JDsENo602UcfXgrEO-2BE2Rc-2B6DxOApsNrSgD65Pci5b5iTWFrch80xanYOeoC-2FDp-2BAec-2BnSTwt-2FhifyTg5BS6aDJmhnlWII-2FvoVywDP3AdE-2BGtCENp7u0AuWkFbob4BTRAcZm09ijDTVjkKjMDm5orSPxUGPpjl7itVp-2FGthZWfniksIW8ZYpA4LaDOBT83Q1eXUrX1JXKOzhHGXLG2wSrg-3D).)
King David took the wife of one of his officers who was fighting on the battlefield for him, and when she became pregnant, he conspired to hide his misdeed. When that failed, he gave an order to kill the woman's husband. **John 8:7-11***When they kept on questioning [Jesus], he straightened up and said to them, "Let anyone among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her." And once again he bent down and wrote on the ground. When they heard it, they went away, one by one, beginning with the elders, and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him. Jesus straightened up and said to her, "Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?" She said, "No one, sir." And Jesus said, "Neither do I condemn you. When religious leaders caught a woman in the act of committing adultery, which was a capital offense in the law of Moses, they brought her to Jesus to see whether he would support their right to stone her (vv. 1-6).
> **Questions:** Should this incident serve as a template for the way authorities handle every capital crime? Why or why not? What principles can we take away from Jesus' approach that can be applied in every other situation?
**Luke 23:23-25***But they kept urgently demanding with loud shouts that he should be crucified, and their voices prevailed. So Pilate gave his verdict that their demand should be granted. He released the man they asked for, the one who had been put in prison for insurrection and murder, and he handed Jesus over as they wished.* (For context, read [Luke 23:13-25](https://u14323725.ct.sendgrid.net/ls/click?upn=u001.kR2s0BHA4IMM0a9cQYZVPIPMr3QdAndcnhgARhLxPRBMJBYCTolkbvW-2F0TosyGzxrmDi49uLo3s-2BewWzPMWJ01AFtSFMCYjpGCvFvGCpOfOLxLbvVHgCUecMQEzX-2B8EyCA9Q_-2FDMt8DmC0b3MPPPEfxHbnxzgfJsbXDNMpwCP9nNwhUmwW6wkyKFLFNgtWOsfoWlqzJWknYznvBlIhQrMvSLcaZdhhbJIKGm-2F5qmCcYPIpJSn2obb9skqJf4MgaypxrLi7oLPa8a7eS7JtzjOXCCX8BHD-2F4cv9wFI-2FUH-2BL75pc25Hbh6RKf8EPZebHASiEu2b1aGXbOqJQ3Dnm6HAk92YmSVqqYpJ-2Bo9f4EnYs50Q4v-2FedarWP-2FyNkje8C0y-2FyCfkwGKjvwsJNTzQ3ubNJUiQ0Dp5sYks5a6RhMHoodXBYgZ3I1NAqTl-2BTgs5gM78pZAMeBctHaoAER-2BzIoXai3vMM-2FEmA2qx2onnfUuUkOXyAGE4qhA6OOhiGaQmYBFO4eSGCqLqX56Y0ui8UTIz7TqVUIrHqEYJeP6fOqo69yx6dktWeE2FFu-2FFJVe1zhPYD-2Fpl6-2Bc9yBLD69ortiy7WypI5a8npv0cSAptakNwSAthtVc-3D).)
During the Passover festival, Pilate had the habit of releasing whatever prisoner the people wanted. He offered them a choice between Barabbas (vv. 18-19), a murderer and insurrectionist (Mark 15:6-7), and Jesus, whom he and Herod had examined, both concluding that he had done nothing to warrant the death penalty (vv. 14-15, 22).

Later Shin-ae joins a congregation that has tried to support her as she grieves. She becomes convinced that her new-found faith requires that she visit her son's murderer in prison to offer him forgiveness. When they meet, before she has a chance to speak, he announces that he too has become a believer, and is elated that they can both belong to God's family. Shin-ae is hurt and confused. She rages, "How dare God forgive him before I have a chance to forgive him myself? Why would he do that to me? WHY?" When her church friends have no answers for her, the traumatized mother abandons the faith.
If you had the opportunity, what would you say to Shin-ae? To the mother of Colleen Slemmer?
2. Respond to this, from TWW Team Member Bill Tammeus: "Christian theological arguments against the death penalty are rooted in the foundational concept that each one of us is made in the image of God. I believe that should prevent any of us from being an executioner either in person or simply by being a citizen of a government that still permits execution of prisoners. Every person executed by my state or federal government is one executed in my name. As a disciple of one unfairly executed by government authorities, I don't want that for anyone else -- by whatever means."

Bailey writes that her perspective on the Christa Pike situation is shaped by the murder of her own son. She stressed the need to remember Colleen Slemmer, who was 19 years old when she was brutally killed. "I would never ask Colleen's family to forgive. Forgiveness is too personal to demand. I can tell you what I learned from my own grief. Hatred could not return my son to me. It could only make another grave inside a life wounded by loss, but it could not bring him home. For me, forgiveness became less about what someone else deserved and more about what I refused to let tragedy turn me into."
Bailey also experienced life as a teenager inside the criminal justice system, facing a possible life sentence. "I once needed the world to understand that I was more than my worst chapter," she remarked. She asks us to think about what we want to "create from what cannot be repaired," and who we will choose to be.
Scan her op/ed and discuss how we can build a justice system that takes into account not only a person's bad choices and acts, but also what contributes to misbehavior. How can we honor people's humanity and also hold them accountable for their behavior?
4. Consider this, from TWW Team Member Frank Ramirez: "In a book on the plays of Christopher Marlowe, the author talked about public executions, hanging, drawing and quartering, which represented a 'Theater of Hell,' to illustrate what was about to become eternal for the miscreants. Such executions didn't necessarily have the promised effect of deterring crime. In an era when pickpocketing was a capital crime, pickpockets plied their craft on the spectators gaping up at the horror show. Do we comfort ourselves with the illusion that capital punishment can be 'humane, scientific, and pain-free' while experiencing almost a pornographic titillation and fascination with the spectacle of an execution? There is evidence that capital punishment is unevenly meted out, which suggests that people are willing to throw some lives away as sacrifices to some strange god who promises security for the rest of us."
Years ago, a Lutheran pastor ordained in the Church of Sweden noted that their prayer book had a prayer for "a man unjustly condemned to death." This recognized the fallibility of humans as well as the mercy of God.
**Responding to the News**
For further study: Have you seen this quote from Gandalf of *The Lord of the Rings* displayed in a meme on social media? "Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgment."
TWW Team Member Mary Sells observed that we humans often desire a type of justice that punishes others for their misdeeds, while we hunger for mercy so that we might not be punished harshly for our own missteps. Can we count on the unfairness of God to forgive sinners (i.e., God's mercy) whether or not we deserve it?
It's been said that if you're not prepared to see Hitler in heaven, you have more work to do. But who in their right mind could forgive a mass murderer? What possible punishment would be sufficient for someone who caused so much death and destruction?
What do you take away from the following texts regarding the use of killing, vengeance and capital punishment? About undeserved and unjust punishment? Undeserved mercy and unmerited favor? Unforgivable sin? What constitutes justice from our point of view and how does that compare and contrast with God's perspective?

**Prayer**
God in your wisdom, guide our feet in the ways of your justice and mercy. Help us to see your image in every person, and not judge others based on the worst thing they have ever done. Empower us to protect the vulnerable from the violent. Take the blinders from our eyes, that we may see the world clearly as you do, and do what is right in your eyes. Amen.
