Dear Class Members, UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was shot to death outside a hotel in New York City on Wednesday, December 4. Since the shocking act has evoked nationwide reactions, this installment of *The Wired Word* will focus on what the Scriptures teach us about resolving issues through violence, the temptation to create scapegoats, and the happiness that some people feel when they witness another person's misfortune. ![](https://www.thewiredword.com/_img/tww_logo_email.jpg) **Health Insurance Executive is Murdered in New York City*****The Wired Word*** **for the Week of December 15, 2024** **In the News** Brian Thompson, CEO of UnitedHealthcare, was murdered on Wednesday morning, December 4, outside a Hilton hotel in New York City. Thompson, 50, was shot and killed in what police are calling a "premeditated, targeted attack." The gunman, dressed entirely in black and with his face covered, aimed a pistol at Thompson and fired three times, hitting the executive in the back and the calf. Thompson is survived by his wife, Paulette, and their two children. Footage obtained by *Fox News* shows the suspect riding a bicycle in Manhattan's Upper West Side neighborhood following the attack. Officials believe that he then left the city. Police have released multiple images of the suspected gunman, including one surveillance image obtained while he was flirting with a hostel staff member prior to the shooting. Thompson was shot just before 7 a.m. on Wednesday, and he died less than 30 minutes later. Detectives are investigating a number of items the suspect left behind, including a backpack, a water bottle, a phone and shell casings. A retired FBI agent said that the backpack contained discarded materials, wrappers and bottles that could possibly create a DNA and fingerprint profile of the suspect. At the scene of the murder, shell casings were found with the words "deny," "depose" and "delay." These words echo the title of a book critical of the healthcare industry: *"Delay, Deny, Defend: Why Insurance Companies Don't Pay Claims and What You Can Do About It."* An NYPD detective told *Fox News Digital* Thursday that the words were "clearly intentionally left to make a statement." The New York Police Department sent officers to Georgia, since the suspect was thought to have arrived in New York from Atlanta before the attack. Then, on Monday, the investigation shifted quickly from Georgia to Pennsylvania. In Altoona, a 26-year-old man was identified as a "strong person of interest," and police began to question him after he was found carrying a gun, a silencer, a mask and fake identification cards. According to *CNBC*, the man is a University of Pennsylvania graduate named Luigi Mangione, detained by police in Altoona after an employee of a local McDonald's reported that he was acting suspiciously. Mangione had in his possession a suspected "ghost gun," possibly made with a 3-D printer, capable of firing 9mm rounds. This gun is consistent with the firearm used in the murder. Mangione also was carrying several fake ID cards, including one from New Jersey in the name of "Mark Rosario." That matches the name on a fake New Jersey ID used by a man who checked into a hostel in Manhattan more than a week before Thompsonโ€™s killing. According to police, Mangione also was carrying a handwritten document that suggests "he has some ill will toward corporate America." Hours later, prosecutors in New York charged Mangione with the murder of Brian Thompson. Across the country, reactions to the murder have been passionate, with a variety of viewpoints expressed. Reports *The Atlantic*, "One post on X wishing that the murderer would never be caught racked up 95,000 likes. Social media was littered with jokes about Thompson's pending hospital bills, and the tragedy of him not returning to his 'mcmansion.โ€™ One journalist posted a chart on X showing that UnitedHealthcare denies a larger percentage of users' healthcare bills than any other major insurer. Gallup polling has revealed that just 31% of Americans have a positive view of the healthcare industry. *Newsweek* reports that in a conversation on the r/Republican subreddit, users said they "simply cannot bring [themselves] to care," writing that they suspect the shooter to be one of the millions of people denied coverage by United Healthcare. "If you're the CEO of a company doing that to people, there's 12 million people with a motive to come after you," one user said. On the left, a professor was among the posters on X mockingly eulogizing Thompson by stating that "we mourn the death of 68,000 Americans who needlessly die each year so that insurance company execs like Brian Thompson can become multimillionaires." At the same time, many have strongly condemned the murderer. From the right, Dominic Pino wrote in *National Review*, "There appears to be some confusion about this online, so here it is plain and simple: Murdering corporate executives is evil." And from the left, Sen. John Fetterman criticized Americans who are downplaying the murder. In an X post, he attached a screenshot of a *New York Magazine* article entitled "The United Healthcare Shooting Was Inevitable." Said Fetterman, "The public execution of an innocent man and father of two is indefensible, not 'inevitable.'" To those who were celebrating the killing, he said, "Condoning and cheering this on says more about YOU than the situation of health insurance." In a statement on Monday, Brian Thompson's parent company said, "Our hope is that today's apprehension brings some relief to Brian's family, friends, colleagues and the many others affected by this unspeakable tragedy." This particular feeling of pleasure is what the Germans call *schadenfreude*, which combines the German words *schaden*, meaning "damage," and *freude*, which means "joy." **The Big Questions** 1. What was your first reaction to news of the murder of CEO Brian Thompson? How did your feelings change over time, if at all? 2. When have you felt frustrated by the U.S. healthcare system, if at all? What action did you take, if any, to resolve the issues you were facing? When is violence an appropriate way to resolve issues, if ever? 3. Where do you see people being made scapegoats for the failures of institutions? When have you been made a scapegoat, or when have you scapegoated another person? What was the result? 4. Have you ever felt pleasure when witnessing another person's misfortune? How do such feelings align with your Christian faith, if at all? 5. How is your congregation involved in preserving the health of church members, if at all? What role, if any, should the church play in reforming the U.S. healthcare system? (Christians of different political persuasions will not, of course, always agree on what reforms are desirable.) **Confronting the News With Scripture and Hope**Here are some Bible verses to guide your discussion: **Leviticus 16:21-22***Then Aaron shall lay both his hands on the head of the live goat and confess over it all the iniquities of the Israelites, and all their transgressions, all their sins, putting them on the head of the goat and sending it away into the wilderness by means of someone designated for the task. The goat shall bear on itself all their iniquities to a barren region, and the goat shall be set free in the wilderness.* (For context, read [Leviticus 16:15-22](https://u14323725.ct.sendgrid.net/ls/click?upn=u001.kR2s0BHA4IMM0a9cQYZVPIPMr3QdAndcnhgARhLxPRBMJBYCTolkbvW-2F0TosyGzxjEJmKyTKrwMbYoHzGlAEZSeXbEVpiK-2F76x25H3jfiHa9KNtYHIMVPvE0DCM9JA8uWwHD_-2FDMt8DmC0b3MPPPEfxHbnxzgfJsbXDNMpwCP9nNwhUmwW6wkyKFLFNgtWOsfoWlqzJWknYznvBlIhQrMvSLcaZdhhbJIKGm-2F5qmCcYPIpJSn2obb9skqJf4MgaypxrLi7oLPa8a7eS7JtzjOXCCX8BHD-2F4cv9wFI-2FUH-2BL75pc25Hbh6RKf8EPZebHASiEu2b1aGXbOqJQ3Dnm6HAk92Ymac7Sb5jEiRjpmUf3ekgfMoQMf4cO7Og9wmQ6BDRcr6oJzpmRyvaupFp-2Blc8mA-2BI3APUNjY-2FqLC9H0FD-2Bgg-2BeR37v9J9gmr3ye0shp5vtthjhh9qB8xxCb2f8F46yGSr6Ljis-2BIN3QLd1RGlAEB9CBW33VRMmZmNqyLL2QMa-2Be9uI-2B-2Fws0qRmAKkRlClMJykY-2BU9AAfkYo5niM8Hc3Mx55qd0s76Bvc6icExmvAiq033TuOAY7PJLQNS4NATZZ8MkCsyPXTnCjR5VwO2tf7c7tU-3D).) The book of Leviticus gets its name from the Levitical priests who served as leaders of religious services among the people of Israel. Leviticus contains a mix of religious, civil and moral regulations, and chapter 16 describes the actions of Aaron on the Day of Atonement. Aaron was the brother of Moses and the first High Priest of Israel, the leader of the tribe of the Levites. In the Bible, a scapegoat is one of a pair of kid goats. One is sacrificed (v. 15), while the other, the scapegoat, is released into the wilderness, taking with it all sins and impurities. The scapegoat first appears in Leviticus 16, in which a goat is designated to be cast into the desert to carry away the sins of the community. Over time, the word "scapegoat" has come to be associated with a person who is blamed and punished for the sins of others. Some Christians make a connection between the sacrifice of these two goats and the fates of Barabbas and Jesus in Jerusalem. During Holy Week, guilty Barabbas was released while innocent Jesus was presented by the High Priest to the Romans, who "sacrificed" him through crucifixion. > **Questions:** Why do you think people are tempted to look for a scapegoat, a person who is blamed and punished for the sins of others? How was CEO Brian Thompson turned into a scapegoat, in your opinion? What problems arise from scapegoating? **Matthew 7:1-2***[Jesus said] โ€œDo not judge, so that you may not be judged. For the judgment you give will be the judgment you get, and the measure you give will be the measure you get."* (For context, read [Matthew 7:1-5](https://u14323725.ct.sendgrid.net/ls/click?upn=u001.kR2s0BHA4IMM0a9cQYZVPIPMr3QdAndcnhgARhLxPRBMJBYCTolkbvW-2F0TosyGzxEE9arX6m0yHZZAbtNhYaDbcxgErfVHnuIZW9ditWJLgwpQ3j8RoLemvYMPGqulZb5fVd_-2FDMt8DmC0b3MPPPEfxHbnxzgfJsbXDNMpwCP9nNwhUmwW6wkyKFLFNgtWOsfoWlqzJWknYznvBlIhQrMvSLcaZdhhbJIKGm-2F5qmCcYPIpJSn2obb9skqJf4MgaypxrLi7oLPa8a7eS7JtzjOXCCX8BHD-2F4cv9wFI-2FUH-2BL75pc25Hbh6RKf8EPZebHASiEu2b1aGXbOqJQ3Dnm6HAk92Ymac7Sb5jEiRjpmUf3ekgfMoQMf4cO7Og9wmQ6BDRcr6oJzpmRyvaupFp-2Blc8mA-2BI3NBymzL-2BXJ2afgYBhW9rKAYFNG24-2BQ13bdV9KP0mHePkDix4ovC-2BdYsW3TzMscUsDn4l3bbUUHQnBu2u51rhZ3wIHGIViOmFc0NZ1TB82kPRpUM28KQ6Bs5wlQyBw3FeeN9TrM7kv8-2BHaK6bI4HT9OLAAfNlb8i9G5Ejgrp1FiHHEZaTpPIwMyfisWtjmgFW692MCauZG0zP-2BBE0gcvIQe8-3D).) Matthew often sees Jesus as a new Moses, giving teachings and laws to his followers. At the heart of his instruction is the Sermon on the Mount, which is found in chapters 5 through 7. At the beginning of chapter 7, Jesus warns against double standards, telling people that they should not judge other people while being unwilling to be judged themselves. He knows that it is easy to see "the speck in your neighbor's eye" while not noticing "the log in your own eye" (v. 3). Instead of rushing to judgment, we should remove the log from our own eye before removing the speck from a neighbor's eye. > **Questions:** Where did you see a rush to judgment following the murder of Brian Thompson? Why was it easy for many to see "the speck" in his eye? What kind of "log" do you need to remove from your own eye so that you can see this situation clearly? What kind of clear-eyed judgment is needed as people work to improve the U.S. healthcare system? **John 11:49-50***But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, โ€œYou know nothing at all! You do not understand that it is better for you to have one man die for the people than to have the whole nation destroyed.โ€* (For context, read [John 11:45-53](https://u14323725.ct.sendgrid.net/ls/click?upn=u001.kR2s0BHA4IMM0a9cQYZVPIPMr3QdAndcnhgARhLxPRBMJBYCTolkbvW-2F0TosyGzxm710weIZqGHxzbXNCbplKXjphZs-2BXfRn0-2FuD-2Fz-2FkhS0q6tpO6ugsETS9LowLHF1jCvjA_-2FDMt8DmC0b3MPPPEfxHbnxzgfJsbXDNMpwCP9nNwhUmwW6wkyKFLFNgtWOsfoWlqzJWknYznvBlIhQrMvSLcaZdhhbJIKGm-2F5qmCcYPIpJSn2obb9skqJf4MgaypxrLi7oLPa8a7eS7JtzjOXCCX8BHD-2F4cv9wFI-2FUH-2BL75pc25Hbh6RKf8EPZebHASiEu2b1aGXbOqJQ3Dnm6HAk92Ymac7Sb5jEiRjpmUf3ekgfMoQMf4cO7Og9wmQ6BDRcr6oJzpmRyvaupFp-2Blc8mA-2BI3J89PlQBr4ZPKqUVZGnrgfgJnyTXM-2BbnNLDjXmL4TH3D7chejzVnntAR-2FExoyiq6Nh6hxx5BKZV1zyszn9egiwkrv9GIo275A0KkNSL2xgVQIkVVEPenuReU7QUx4olSbmSnzkDZbRe0SgtzJEsjmbjXWBy3Tq-2FSKZsVYCk41ZVhSPFEICrcZgkxZn8dPW0KwCpRwrii99-2FstfyKcNv-2FDzY-3D).) After the raising of Lazarus from the dead (a story told only by John), many of the Jews who witnessed the miracle believed in Jesus. But some of them went to the Pharisees and reported what Jesus had done. The chief priests and the Pharisees called a meeting of the Jewish council and said, "If we let [Jesus] go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and destroy both our holy place and our nation" (v. 48). Their concern was legitimate, both about the power of Jesus to inspire belief, and the likelihood that the Romans would suppress any popular movement with force. Then the high priest Caiaphas made the suggestion that it is better "to have one man die for the people than to have the whole nation destroyed." The other leaders agreed, and from that point on they planned to put Jesus to death. What they did not realize was that Jesus was going to die not only for the nation, "but to gather into one the dispersed people of God" (v. 52). > **Questions:** When, if ever, is it better to kill one man than to have a whole group of people destroyed? How is such a belief reflected by people who said they could not mourn Brian Thompson, but they mourned the thousands who allegedly died from his company's decisions about health coverage? What is the attraction of such a perspective? What is the danger? **1 Timothy 5:17-19***Let the elders who rule well be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in preaching and teaching, for the scripture says, "You shall not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain" and "The laborer deserves to be paid." Never accept any accusation against an elder except on the evidence of two or three witnesses.* (No context needed.) In his first letter to Timothy, the apostle Paul offers advice to a younger colleague who is ministering to churches in Paul's absence. Although written to Timothy, a man of mixed Jewish and Greek descent, many other church leaders have benefited from Paul's guidance over the ages. In chapter 5, Paul speaks about proper behavior in the community of Christ's followers, and addresses the type of respect, honor and financial support that are due to older men and women. When he says, "Honor widows who are really widows" (v. 3), he is speaking not only of respect but of financial support. He urges that "the elders who rule well be considered worthy of double honor," again speaking of money. Quoting Deuteronomy 25:4 and Luke 10:7, he says that "You shall not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain," and "The laborer deserves to be paid." Finally, he demands that a person never accept "any accusation against an elder" unless evidence is provided by two or three witnesses. > **Questions:** What limits, if any, would you put on executive compensation, in light of the admonition that you "shall not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain"? What changes should be made in our healthcare system, in your opinion, so that laborers can keep more of their pay? Did you see sufficient evidence that Brian Thompson and his company had acted improperly? Be specific. **For Further Discussion** 1. What would Jesus want you to do? **Responding to the News** Reflect on the various emotions that have arisen out of this murder case -- grief, anger, joy, love, hate, *schadenfreude* -- as well as desires for criminal justice and healthcare reform. Make a commitment to be less judgmental in your own life, following the teachings of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount. Work with fellow Christians to provide compassionate help to those who are struggling with finances or health concerns. As a first step, reach out to a neighbor who is stressed, and listen to their story. **Prayer** God of justice and truth, we ask you to help us to work together to improve our society, so that the physical and spiritual health of all your people can be improved. We pray this in the name of Jesus, the Prince of Peace.
