## ๐ Summary
- Curtis McHale explains principles for creating effective Zettelkasten notes in Obsidian
- Key distinction: atomic notes focusing on single ideas vs. comprehensive book reviews
- Proper linking strategies using double brackets for concepts and hashtags for topics
- Template systems and unique identifiers prevent conflicts and improve long-term usability
- Graph view helps identify isolated knowledge areas that need more development
## ๐ Main Content
The video demonstrates the difference between ineffective and effective note-taking in a Zettelkasten system. Bad notes are comprehensive book reviews that contain multiple unrelated ideas without proper connections. Good notes are atomic - focusing on single concepts that can be easily linked to other ideas. The author shows how proper linking using wiki-style double brackets creates a knowledge graph, while hashtags serve as broad topic filters. Timestamp suffixes on note titles prevent conflicts and ensure long-term accessibility even if the software changes.

#### โฑ๏ธ [00:00](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q4JqjbQZ6_Q?t=0) โ [H1] Introduction to Zettelkasten note quality
- Key idea: Focus on note structure rather than software specifics
- Evidence: "Today we're not gonna be talking specifically about that piece of software but we are gonna be talking about the notes"
#### โฑ๏ธ [01:30](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q4JqjbQZ6_Q?t=90) โ [H2] Example of bad note: comprehensive book review
- Key idea: Book reviews contain too many unrelated ideas to be useful
- Evidence: "This is simply a book review, it is not a small atomic idea, it is a lot of ideas in here"
#### โฑ๏ธ [02:45](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q4JqjbQZ6_Q?t=165) โ [H2] Author attribution importance
- Key idea: Always include source information for future reference
- Evidence: "The thing that's good about it is that I've kept the author... I can see other web articles or other things"
#### โฑ๏ธ [03:20](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q4JqjbQZ6_Q?t=200) โ [H1] Better note structure: Late Bloomers example
- Key idea: Separate atomic ideas from book reviews with clear organization
- Evidence: "Each one of these... is actually a single atomic idea from the book"
#### โฑ๏ธ [04:15](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q4JqjbQZ6_Q?t=255) โ [H2] Key ideas vs further inquiry distinction
- Key idea: Prioritize ideas you want to investigate further
- Evidence: "The ones that are in further lines of inquiry those are the ones that I really... thought oh I see a lot more relations here"
#### โฑ๏ธ [05:30](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q4JqjbQZ6_Q?t=330) โ [H1] Atomic note example: Tie actions to purpose
- Key idea: Single concept notes enable better cross-connections

#### โฑ๏ธ [07:45](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q4JqjbQZ6_Q?t=465) โ [H2] Cross-linking between atomic concepts
- Key idea: Atomic notes naturally connect to related concepts across books
- Evidence: "That relates to range specifically with its idea of what Smith calls match fit"
#### โฑ๏ธ [09:20](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q4JqjbQZ6_Q?t=560) โ [H2] Hashtag vs bracket linking strategies
- Key idea: Use hashtags for broad topics, brackets for concept connections
- Evidence: "I use the hashtag tag here because... I want to find all my writing ideas... I don't think they relate that way"
#### โฑ๏ธ [11:00](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q4JqjbQZ6_Q?t=660) โ [H2] Question-driven note development
- Key idea: Include questions to identify areas needing further research
- Evidence: "I wonder if this is because the base level of knowledge is so high that it takes way longer to be able to make a contribution"

welcome over the last while I'veactually done a lot of videos onobsidian and what it is a little bitabout how to use it today we're notgoing talking specifically about thatpiece of software but we are gonna betalking about the notes that I put inthat software and specifically whatmakes a good settle Caston note so I'llshow you some examples of some bad onesthat I have and I'll tell you why I havethem and I'll show you some examples ofwhat I think are good ones ones that are
proving useful long term to me so buckleup so there are a few considerationswhen you start building good notes I'mgoing to show you a couple mostly a badnote first this is a bad note the thingthat's good about it is that I've keptthe author and so if I have other stufffrom I believe he says that TristanHarris I can see other say web articlesor other things I can find that because
I've used a the double brackets here thedouble square brackets as a wiki linkwhat's bad about this is is this issimply a book review it is not a smallatomic idea it is a lot of ideas in hereand if I went through you there's a lotof their citations into the book that'sgood right because yeah I have pagenumbers say right here I do have onelink out to a revisionist historyepisode that talks about ell SATs so
there's some connections here and thereason I have this is because when Istarted my obsidian database is that Ihad a lot of book reviews and they hadlinks to other books and it wasreasonably simple for me to import or tograb visceral markdown files already aswell because I use static as my site CMSbut then I could actually grab them putthem in and have some data to work within my graph just to get started but it'sultimately not that good a note because
I'm not relating to atomic ideas so abetter one is actually over here youknow this will be better as a verticalsplit let's close that andand then go late bloomers this is abetter one one of the things you'realways gonna need to see is again whereit's from or who the author is I put inthe notebook that's more just for me soI can see everything I've taken in asingle notebook for 2019 r2 which is my
second notebook for 2019 and I put in alink to my review the actual writtenreview of it now after that each one ofthese let's start with Ty actions topurpose because it's the one I have openin the split is actually a single atomicidea from the book right so I have somethat I split up in two key ideas I theydidn't really I think they're importantto me but I don't really think thatthey're ones I'm gonna necessarilyinvestigate further at this moment I
might like I might in the future thatmight change when I wrote about it Ididn't think oh I really want to knowabout this so I just didn't worry aboutit and the ones that are in furtherlines of inquiry those are the ones thatI really because I wrote about them Ithought oh I see a lot more relationshere and I find this more interesting ifyou see antioxidants to purpose I'veactually got in here and I've said latebloomers and I've written about it andI've related it to some other thingslike the context principle so let's open
up that one a context principle I cansay that's from the end of average and Iwant to find this story remember anotherbook that I read so this is what'shappened over the last six years I'veread four hundred books and I rememberreading it in one of them that Vietnamsoldiers were addicted to drugs inVietnam and when they came over to theu.s. their context changed and the drugaddiction mostly dropped off but this
single atomic idea right tie actions topurpose the more your actions are tiedto your purpose the more gritty willshow it means need to avoid sunk costfallacy so continuing in things justbecause we're doing it and be willing tofind your true passion by quitting it'snot related to another single idea somecost fallacy is so logical fallacy Ihave notes on that and that's like thecontext principle which was in the endof averagewhere as you perform your more gritty insituations where you're excelling
basically so we've our Gritty of notgritty depending on the situationthey're in that's also goes to rangeagain for range I only have a full bookreview at this point I'm still workingthrough my book notes for the last asI'm starting with my most recentnotebook and then I just keep going backright that relates to range specificallywith its idea of what Smith calls matchfit and that is that in essence for mostpeople the longer you take to find a
career the better your matchfit so it's a career that fits youbetter than it would otherwise if youjust don't jump into the first thing youfind and it also relates to the secondmountain well and specifically I link tothe whole book there because the book isabout the second Mountain or living alife with purpose and so that's notnecessarily a single idea like that'swhat the whole book is about the wholeidea of the second mountain is on thefirst mountain which is you know moreliving for yourself living for your own
gratification but earning money stufflike that and the second mountain isliving for someone else living forpurpose with someone else or for withpurpose for something else outsideyourself well that's your community yourmarriage kids like something that's notinside you and so that's why I did notrelate that necessarily to a single ideain that book because I didn't pull anysingle ideas out of that book that'smore nah but under that book that werespecifically this idea that relates tothe main one and then I tagged it in a
broad topic as a writing idea now I usethe natural hashtag tag here because Ithink is just a broad like I want tofind all my writing ideas in the futureand a writing idea I don't want to seehow they all like see them all linkedtogether under it like a note forwriting ideas I don't think they relatethat way I'll just find them later nowas I took my notes for late bloomersespecially my further lines of inquiry Iwas really looking to see how things
worked and how they link to other stuffso you can see with one note I have herewarded scientists are getting older Ido have a question here but I wantedif this is because and his says in latebloomers that were scientists andinventors everyone else is just gettingolder but I wonder if this is becausethe base level of knowledge is so highthat it takes way longer to be able tomake a contribution in any field sothat's one that I'll look at long termthe conveyor belt of success reducesempathy was another one right and I also
linked that again to kids these dayssure it was a bad note but it talks alot about how competition among all agesreallybut among up to like college for thatwinning seat for the early success whichis the late bloomers is about how earlysuccess how early success is bad or waytoo prized and late bloomers really canwin the dayso that's I will as I go back throughkids these days and turn it into a
proper note I'll actually related inhere right or find your true passion byquittingso I actually already linked that oneover here you can see fine to truepassion by quitting right now you made anote maybe I straight the quitters Bibleand so this will be a bigger idea abigger writing idea long-term maybe andso I did double link that because I alsothink there's other books like the dipis all about quitting a couple othersthat I've read that I have to go look upin the quitters Bible to find that that
will let me link long-term to thequitters Bible as a writing idea maybe abook that I will write one dayself-doubt can lead to handicap soinstead I put in again embraceself-doubt so let's look at thatI'm very self-doubt is what from whatembrace of depth soap and also from latebloomers and also kind of likesandbagging and bears don't care about
your problems it's like a outdoor almostcomedy book that I'm reading and theytalk in one chapter about sandbaggingyou or your friends which is the ideathat oh you can tell what I do thisthing that's really hard it's easy andit may or may not be easy but you'retelling them it is so that it can getdone because sometimes they can't reallydo it and sometimes you just want to doit in your pink selfishso that's kind of like that idea and Iwill like I can go back and find thatlater I'm not I would not normally takea notes on like a comedy book like that
No one thing you also see and a lot ofmy notes now is this the settle cast andI believe it's a prefix in here you canturn that on in obsidian by going it'sright near the bottom that will Castonprefix ur and it gives youyear-month-day power minute I actuallylike it as a suffix although itshouldn't really matter an obsidian that
will do a fuzzy search the reason Ithink this is good is because I cancertainly have another note that'scalled embrace self depth that would besimilar like I certainly want to titlesomething there if right now there's noiPad version of obsidian so I would beeasy to have a conflict and by having adate time stamp in there like I'm notgoing to take in 60 seconds two notesthat match exactly so that way I candifferentiate them and this also allowsme long term to use any type of grabber
like any type of search system thatsearches across tall files if obsidianwent away I can just search by markdownfiles for identifiers that don't changeand I can find them fairly easily whichwill be niceso I've liked this and I've embraced itI've actually just written a shortcut iniOS to help me transform and get what ismy idol cast and header minute this willbe thought of a video on this eventuallyas I've shared schedule adjust don't
know when but that takes a devonthinkarticle that's something I've saved indevonthink and pulls out all the data itcan and then creates a new file yeah inone writer for me in the proper spot soand it creates it with this is that'llCaston suffix in that case now anothertype of note that you're gonna find inhere and I can find mine keeping andconnecting ideas so this is a topic notethis is all about how people take notes
what they do with them different systemsright the IMF system and I haven'tlooked at a lot of thesethis I have f system so you say I've gotsome links to it and I have it tagged asto summarized something I still want tosummarize I've got something as mentalnodes I haven't even looked at that yetor how to take smart notesthis is legs up to the book how to takesmart notes which I have done right or
the note card system and that's so justtag got in DT so I have that indevonthink alreadyshe's Ethel Caston so that's again thewhole system which I've talked about theshoebox method which is kind of liketopic notes a shoebox method is that'llcast and except that it oh except thatwhen you have a project you're workingon you take your shoebox you can createa project shoebox basically that's whatit is a project group of cards and sothat'll Caston even says something like
that right well there's the mine gardenthe commonplace book so this is a topicnote and you'll keep these four againtopics right keeping and connectingideas so this is kind of like researchsystems methods of doing your researchand how to catalog your ideas notnecessarily software related to haveanother one for research best researchapp face spelled wrong that kind oflinks out to all the different researchapps that I'm kind of looking at orinterested in and I'll probably write a
longer article on this at some point butfor now I'm just you know kind ofcollecting the research and this givesme like an easy way to go I want to lookat the room research stuff or at theObsidian stuff I can look at obsidianand have here's all my kind of ongoingnotes as I use it those would be topicnotes use those when you have a lot ofstuff kind of centering around an ideaand you want to be able to jump into ityeah it's kind of like an index right soyou can find it you can grab your topic
note and then you can jump deeper intoit as you go now one of the questionsI've seen people ask is how many notesdo you need before your settle Caston isuseful that's how many I have let's goto iCloud oh that's actually right hereI don't need that I can go like that andhere's an easy way to tell I have threehundred and sixty notessee from the red thing buy a couple morebecause I don't think it's counting thatoh it's inside my daily folder just partway down and that gives me a graph thatlooks like this I think there's some
improvements to the graph view to makeit useful right it's kind of hard to seeexactly what like how to take smartnotes and see like exactly whereeverything links together well I'd loveto see some filtering but we'll getthere right you see obsidian I've got alot of different stuff here but thegraph view lets me see stuff like that'shard to see actually because of how theydo the graph view but I'll pull this outand now I can see that this node here
which is books on race and a bunch ofbooksalright the invention of the white racewhich was linked to in one book I'vealready read why I'm no longer talkingto white people about race I can startto see that this node is kind of sittingoff on its own it links through intomeritocracy which was in the secondmountain but outside of that there'sjust not a lot to it yet and that's oneof the big things that I find that thegraph view is doing for me at this pointit's letting me see some nodes that are
just kind of off on their own I don'thave anything about yet I don't reallythat means I need to educate myself onit better right and I think I haveanother one around here might be hard tofind just because you can't filter youcan see another kind of white space thatwas an article so this one I expect willconnect over into the other oneeventually and this is about race stuffand then race it and I got another oneracism in Canada rights this is anotherone that I will get through and there's
another one I have around original sinlike traitors bloodI was aching God Delusion of the racismwon right I should actually link that inso this is one way where I could go intoall right I could go into why no longertalking to white people at race and Icould go in and say tags I didn't tagthis as racism at all but it's just ageneral idea this is a racism topicare you sysm so now that I've tagged
this andin this manner it will actually show upin my graph head it should link it outto the other one so and the graph movesa little bit so that sucks but I'm nolonger talking to white people a traceconnects into oh go back I'm gonna findit again alright goes into racism whichwe can see is right here kind of buriedin this node and original sins that
actually transfers or links it into theGod Delusionby Richard Dawkins so if you wantsomething to link into your other notesthen you're gonna use the doublebrackets if you just want to house areference so I could find all my writingideas right I can go into here andsearch for writing ideas I can find themall and like I could just Oh idea that's
what I have it a singular I go backthrough and find all my differentwriting ideas that I want to work onthat are things that I want to developfurther kind of as I go so as far as howmany notes do you need probably gonnadepend on how concentrated you notes areright I have a lot more notes aroundsome some topics and then I do othertopics and some of that is because thereading and the books that I put in hereare kind of more centered because I readone book that got me to read anotherbook that got me read another one andsome of that is just because because
that's what are the reading I've doneright I haven't done a lot of stuff onracism there's another one in here thatI haven't been able to find for you veryquickly that is about First Nations inCanada and racism and I've got a couplebooks on that but I've taken notes onbut I haven't linked those so again thisis another one that we'll link into Icould go back in here why we should beanti-racist tags I don't see I tagged itthat way instead of this way and I
should actually tag it like that so nowthis will connect into my graph and I'llstart to see some more connections asI'm working and that's itthat's what I think makes it good isthat'll cast a note that you should havea template and my template will be inthe show notes here I use and you can'tdo this unfortunately in you have anuntitled note so I can show you yeah somy thing is actuallyzet but because of how this software is
developed it's just not going to work soI actually have to go zette space andnow I can't copy and paste this in to atitle the reason I do this is itactually lets me use it do the samething in my iPad as well just by typingthe same stuff and if I have a book itis actually just be set and that's allthe template that I want so get a
template that you like my template is inthis I have a screencast on doing booknotes my templates there for my booksand do that template and if you wantstuff to relate to tag it with yourdouble brackets if you want it just tobe like a broad topic so you can forsearching so you can find it like mywriting ideas just use the hashtag tagand just keep taking notes keep yournotes small keep them atomic so you canrelate ideas not entire books because
you want to relate the idea not just thebook and just keep going if you reallylike the video you can give me a thumbsup if you really really like the video Iguess you can subscribe hit the bellbecause that way YouTube let you knowwhen new videos come out and if you wantto support the channel you can go topatreon.com/scishowand support the channel to make suremore videos come out have an excellentday
