you know, as a I I grew up the uh the opposite. I grew up in the vineyard. I've been in the vineyard movement since I was probably eight or nine years old. I jumped into my seminary train was in a reformed world where I got exposed to a uh you know, sacramentality, I guess, for the first time. >> So, a lot of our listeners and viewers are, you know, beginning to explore sacramentality. And >> when you think of that word sacramentality and sacramental theology, like how would you describe that for everyday Christian life? Yeah, obviously the term has its origin in,
you know, the New Testament and and then it acquires a a certain sort of cluster of meanings throughout church history. But the basic sense is that our experience of the life and power and presence and grace of God comes through physical things, not despite or beyond them. M and the reason why we experience is because that's exactly how God set up the world. That's how he purposefully set up the world. That we would perceive
all of creation as a kind of a painting, an icon. that language we find in scripture and that our our experience of being nourished by God in many ways, you know, through the four elements that the Holy Spirit works through earth, earthy things and windy things and watery things and fiery things in order to nourish and enliven us and transform us. And that is precisely how God wills and
desires it to be. So the material isn't an obstacle to the life, presence, power and grace of God. It is precisely the medium, the God ordained medium by which we experience his very life. So that I think would be the basic sense of sacramentality at least that terms. And then sacraments obviously tend to point to certain specific things you know that people practice when they gather uh in corporate worship, things that were ordained by Jesus himself. Curiously,
like in in free church traditions, they tend to be called ordinances. >> Yeah. >> From the idea that they're ordered. And so we have the ordering of the Lord's supper, the ordering of baptism. But funnily enough, maybe funnily, ironically, there is a third sacrament that he commands, which is footwashing. >> Mhm. Unfortunately, church history didn't pick up on that as a possible sacrament uh ordinance. But it is very all these are very physical things
through which God wants us to encounter him. So that that would be I guess the sense of sacramentality., What Is Sacramentality?, YouTube, 01kqfn6fpdh8sfmvyzmcpypxjv.
