https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=niCw7-JfH1s&ab_channel=HumanMade okay I think we should be live hopefully folks can let me know in chat if they're hearing me and seeing me give me some feedback uh as quickly as possible excellent thank you Adam great to see the team are in chat uh that's what we want uh great to see so many people here welcome to today's event I can see chat going off that's great uh we haven't run one of these in a while uh so it's great to be back we've got a jam-pack lineup for you today I think about two and a half hours uh worth of stuff to share so excited to dive into it I'm Tom one of the co-founders of human ma human made was kind of founded out of the WordPress Community um and as we've grown we' developed a deep conviction in how powerful it can be when businesses even big businesses and Enterprise particularly big business and enter prise build their digital infrastructure on open platforms like WordPress and so that's really formed the mission that drives human made today uh being that bridge between Enterprise customers Enterprise businesses on one side and and WordPress as an open- Source uh platform and so we do that directly through our work whether that's helping customers take ownership of their digital platforms working on really interesting or challenging projects um but equally and and this is really foundational to open source we also try uh to turn around and do the other side of that too where we take what we learn when we're working with our Enterprise customers uh and when we learn from the market bringing that back to the WordPress project and contributing those learnings back whether that's to the core software or to the broader ecosystem and even partnering one of the wonderful things about the WordPress Community partnering with our peers and even our competitors through things like the scale Consortium to make WordPress even better so that's kind of the pitch uh we've got a little bit of housekeeping before we dive into our first session uh you'll see uh there's some chat you can take take part in chat there uh you you'll need might need to click uh one of the little icons on the right if you aren't seeing that there's multiple different sessions they're happening in different rooms that shouldn't be something you have to worry about because as we move to the next session in the Next Room I'll click a button that should pull everyone over um so that should happen automatically but if it doesn't or you leave and come back you should be able to navigate to the different rooms and find the one that's live and join in below the little chat icon on the right of your of your screen there's also uh a Q&A section uh and so we're hope hopeful that we'll have some time for Q&A at the end of each of the sessions so you can drop questions in there and maybe even upvote questions that you're interested in we'll try and uh pick some of those and answer them uh We've also got polls I don't know whether we're going to be using those or not in previous uh events we've we've dropped some polls in uh to gather uh gather information or some sentiment or some feedback so I'll perhaps let you know through uh through through the next couple and a half two and a half hours whether we're going to be whether we're going to be using those um you can also just ask questions directly in chat and if we run out of time in the sessions uh I think some of the speakers will probably be hanging around in chat uh afterwards and so uh you can just ask your questions there too um and I already see a question actually about recordings uh yes we're recording this and and those will be shared afterwards uh you'll be on a mailing list already if you're here and so we'll we'll get in touch and uh and share those with you once they're ready usually we can turn them around pretty quickly there we go look T moronic they're answering questions in chat already um so it's been an eventful few months inside the WordPress Community uh and I'm imagining that there's probably already some people in chat who are uh hoping that maybe we're just going to address all of that right here right now um in this event but that's not really why we've put on this event uh because while that's happening there's also a lot happening outside of Wordpress there's a lot happening in Tech more generally uh we're in a period of transition in the kind of Enterprise CMS space uh and so we wanted to bring together this event to create a space to discuss those big trends I think WordPress has got a lot to offer uh let's discuss them figure out what they mean for WordPress uh as an Enterprise platform and I think also why this time of transition presents what I think is a real opportunity for WordPress uh as what is already the world's leading open source platform uh for content on the web uh so we're going to be talking a lot about Ai No Surprise the shifting landscape of dxp headless composable uh the rising capability and Adoption of full sight editing I think we're really starting to see that hit it stride um I'll be dropping in between sessions to help us keep on track um and later I'm going to be facilitating a panel discussion too we got some great folks joining there so uh you'll see plenty of me um but to kick us off I'm going to welcome NL to the stage uh NL is the co-founder of human made um and I didn't tell him I was going to say this actually but I think he's real really a Visionary when it comes to uh the I think the kind of future of technology of Open Source uh the open web and how that kind of comes together to to benefit Humanity those that will know him know that he spends a lot of time thinking about this stuff and also really living it uh and so I think he's the perfect person to kick us off uh so I'm going to click some buttons to unmute him and bring him on to Stage there we go null you're joining me me stage left and I'll bring your I'm all small now you're all small I'm small with you uh okay well I'm going to take myself off stage and uh and let you introduce your session and kick us off yeah it sounds good um hide this message cool uh that is all great let me just see if everything's working hey what's up everyone uh super happy to see so many familiar faces uh in chat um yeah really really cool and yeah I don't know you know when this like this was a bit of a talk title and panel at Work Camp Asia also um WordPress in 2030 and it's such like a a long way out traditionally I've always done WordPress in the next year or even this year uh and I thought it' just be fun to have a session just be a lot more forward looking um and yeah I like it's it's just fun to look that far forward uh but at the same time we're also going to have some more of the you know WordPress in kind of 2025 2026 sessions uh I'm really looking forward there to Tammy on fulls side editing we also have Marie coming on to give us a big lay of the land around WordPress and what to expect from this year um so it's it's really like the the the full spectrum of of goodies so yeah let's just dive in uh I've got some slides set up so as I always do so let's dive in uh I'll keep the introduction brief I have a deep history in WordPress and in the last two years I spent a lot of my time in Eastern Ukraine uh doing humanitarian work and a bunch of other stuff and the reason I I bring this up um is really I've I've seen such an incredible and accelerated adoption of Wordpress by Charities and other organizations out there that I've really come to see WordPress not only as like fundamental but also incredibly resilient and almost more importantly necessary uh for people Humanity organizations uh everything and it's it's really something where I'm you know I've I've grown a stronger conviction around WordPress um in you know these these last couple years in in in a bit of a different way so just adding facets to it and I think that's what happens when the the world goes through challenging times be it the recessionary stuff be it conflict um be it the tech Market going in you know full up and down swing because of stimulus and covid and everything and despite all of that WordPress is still kicking on uh and we saw that also in 20072 2008 we saw that in in 2021 with uh or 2020 2021 with Co we were seeing it now through all the turbulence um and yeah it's just it it it just speaks so much to what what can be um and I think we some sometimes take it for granted that WordPress may be around in 2030 um it it's it's it's not it's not a given that many cms's will be around then um you know some will or many will fade into Oblivion by the time you know lower popularity less updates potential bankruptcy or just closing up shop or they introduce breaking changes end of life uh the business is acquired or you know whatever may be and for for me you know if I if I really Round Up WordPress and I'd put on nine other logos uh from different cms's and i' you know play hungry games um I'm pretty sure which one I I know is going to be Katniss or is going to come out winning and uh it's it's just so evident to me but it's it's a question worth asking uh because you know why else uh look out in the future if if the product doesn't have a chance of existing so yeah it's it's it's almost crazy in a way that the website you have today could just run endlessly auto update itself and probably keep running well um and that's that's not only something that's you know great from a consumer charity Humanity perspective uh but also it's it's something that translates just really really well to to Enterprise um and yeah that is that is something that you know we should like have a have a bit more of a look into um in terms of yeah what what potential Trends we could see for 20 30 in WordPress um and and just the the space as a whole so yeah let's let's move on in terms of broad Strokes i' I've got a few um I I don't know if they're controversial or I don't even think they're controversial uh but I'm I'm I'm curious what what uh you know a lot of you think and you know please do uh throw your ideas you know if you agree or disagree and chat like absolutely all for it um there's there's there's no stress from my side but the first one I'm I'm going to throw up there is that I think WordPress will is actually already now and will continue to be by then the leading Enterprise no code Page Builder and I I've tried to pick the right words here because it WordPress is in a kind of in a in a difficult predicament because it has become more complex to use the the metric around time to launch for new consumers it has become higher that has deteriorated so whilst there's there's some real competition around the consumer level of Wordpress uh be it with web flow Squarespace other uh products that introduced or have payments fully integrated uh and and are potentially better for just like really really small businesses um at the Enterprise level I think this complexity is kind of what makes it so powerful like we we like complex and and and um weirdly um I don't know just over I don't want to say overdesigned because I I feel like that's the wrong word but you can do a lot and you know I felt that full power because I've I've really tried to build more sites in the last year than I have like I've you know even just the other day I I I got in front of a in in front of a page builder I had Oli Pro I I have the hosting from in WP dis all for charity and I can get going really really uh well and I genuinely enjoyed a block editor I genuinely enjoy full-side editing I genuinely enjoy like where the road map is going and I feel like I can build the things I need to and I also understand how the website can scale be with patterns or uh reusable blocks Sy patterns I mean the naming is a bit confusing I think we can work on that um but generally speaking I I really really like it it's not perfectly structured data uh but from a user perspective like how it works in my mind it's structured in that sense and I I genuinely um like that a lot so um yeah I I I can see how from my perspective how this product in five years is genuinely attractive to Enterprise marketing and content teams much more so than other Solutions available on the market it has taken so much work from such a large ecosystem to get to this point that it is almost impossible to replicate for a close source project project uh to even invest that level of money at at a point in a market now where Investments are being diverted to different kind of ideas and different projects so yeah WordPress is just in a very good position there now I did say the leading Enterprise no code Page Builder and I could have said no code experience Builder um but I I don't have the conviction that we will be this no code Omni Channel builder for SMS text email display uh just all these other channels um I I think it the the the opportunity around WordPress has really uh centralized itself around or centered itself sorry around the idea of a page and this kind of visual page um sure we you can have other content uh feed it through or you know have a lot of metadata Associated to custom post types uh or you can have other data inside of your site but generally speaking I I I feel as if the core um sorry about the I'll just I'll switch in a moment I realized like this this video is playing a lot um but yeah I generally feel that the page experience is where there's there's a bit of a a fence around it um and that everything else really has to find its place in in third party plugins um or if we're lucky first or second party plugins where you know we're really starting talking about Integrations and W commer does that really well um so we're not quite there yet as a as a broader ecosystem uh but I think there's there's nice pockets of that evolving and I'd love to see that um even for niches uh so let's say at the Enterprise level to to have um first or second party Integrations as opposed to third party plugins so the next one is is probably the big one um and it goes without saying that AI has absolutely dominated uh much of what we do um and we we've seen a lot of AI just still being in kind of single prompts um ecosystem or not ecosystem but like um how people use it like the most the most prompts are or the most AI usage is probably just single prompts and now we're looking at how can we chain multiple prompts together how can we provide custom data or our entire like database of data uh how can we store memory between chats uh and more and this is where the idea of a gentic AI is is coming in um where we're really having multiple AI interactions uh over lots of data to uh and different tools to then create um much more Superior outcomes uh and potentially you know more tangible outcomes like actually buying something actually doing something um uh creating a full social media campaign actually publishing it um these are not I I wouldn't necessarily say that that's what AI should do there's a lot of good human in the loop ideas and everything uh but that potential is absolutely there and what I find fascinating in in terms of what companies are doing is that there's there's there's a majority of large organizations actually exploring agentic Ai and with 37% of them already piloting which I I'm a bit dubious in terms of what that means piloting uh but if if it's anything whatsoever it's it's it's already I mean the statistic by itself just being over 10% is very impressive to me um so anything in that direction I I think is still very early days um but we're we're definitely seeing agentic AI kind of replace or try to replace a lot of entry level positions you know be data entry sorting basic communication uh customer support and obviously has a lot of upside um you can scale it as much as you want you can work 24 hours a day um you can feed it infinite infinite amounts or near infinite amounts of data and then refine it over time to try and perfect it um so the idea I think is is very strong um and in WordPress itself it's easy to imagine different types of Agents um some could be Plug-In or functionality based uh so imagine a forums agent or a media agent some could be tied to role uh you could have an administrator uh agent or an optimization agent uh imagine an editor agent uh that makes sure you've added a featured image keeps your spelling and grammar in line uh May suggest different headlines to use uh maybe it keeps your writing within a certain style guide or and Mak suggestions in that regard um and ultimately a lot of the value around that um then compounds when these agents start communicating with each other so even if if you imagine building a landing page that could use forms could use call to actions could use different images this may use or this may need to orchestrate different uh AI agents to put that together but then that result is probably a lot more Superior than if a single AI tried to just write out a bunch of HTML now the reason I like it so much for WordPress is because I think the foundation that we have built uh and this goes back to what I just talked about before in terms of fulls side editing blocks um templates all that good stuff it's it's structured in in such a way in such a granular enough way that I think AI can really leverage it in such a way that it makes sense um so whilst agentic AI is really just being figured out there's no way we're just going to take this idea this abstract idea of it uh this hype potentially of a gentic Ai and just implemented into WordPress this year um so I think whatever form it takes uh there will be some version of that inside of Wordpress by 2030 that is that will be quite powerful uh either in core outside core whatever that may be but it will um it will have to build on the foundations that exist today keeping in mind that we don't quite know what we're going to build yet so part of the reason I'm I'm so optimistic is because of that underlying framework and again I realize uh WordPress is imperfect in terms of like we don't we're not a headless cmsw everything is perfectly structured to each single field uh but in my opinion the way it's done is certainly very very good um so beyond the foundation too we just have this incredibly diverse plug-in ecosystem so if you imagine major plugins each having an agent or if there's a schema for plugins to ad agents um that just multiplies and compounds the effects there even having something like multilingual be native uh to blocks will be a huge contribution to any future AI layers um so all of this just makes me yeah very optimistic and bullish on uh the entire sort of opportunity there now the other interesting thing um the the video that's playing here is is built off my favorite model I didn't I didn't make the the the video but um I would have had I mean it takes a lot of time but it's and it's quite impressive uh because this was made off of flux uh and I got into AI or gen AI sorry through uh images uh so really creating or generating images uh and hosting my own servers be with stable diffusion stable diffusion Excel uh getting into flux then using control net to control flux and um yeah above and beyond and I feel that one of the things that are a really like large opportunity for WordPress right now in terms of Point features and not necessarily just a GIC uh ecosystem stuff is really around trying to unleash creativity a lot more because right now ai is so young inside of Wordpress that a lot of these even like AI block Builders feel a bit more like block randomizers uh so oh I'll you know two column layout or three column layout I'll put put the image on the left I'll put the the text on the left I'll put the call to action on the right or whatever and they're not necessarily um very creative in the same way that potentially a bolt or cursor uh is today and then much less what a mid journey is today uh so to me Peak creativity where you just kind of get lost in in the mindfulness of just generating more and more is something like mid journey and my question to anyone year or Beyond is what does the mid journey of Wordpress look like and that is I I think a great Point feature goal to strive for because one of the scarcest resources we see on the internet today is attention and WordPress doesn't have much attention because a lot of these other tools are are grabbing that but if WordPress was able to build a couple Point features like that even in the short term I think that would Garner quite a lot of attention and potentially you know Drive some um some Renewed Energy behind a project in in certain places so the I spoke a bit about the short term um I I I think longer term or even just midterm what I'm really looking for is is more of these ecosystem tools so not necessarily Point features um the screenshot that's up uh now is of comfy UI which is a wrapper workflow tool for all the different image models and here you can see a source image on the left then there's control net which uh is able to learn from the um from the the before image uh so in this case it's taking uh outlines it's taking a depth map and then using prompts creating entirely new images um and these workflow tools are I I find them amazing because you're able to p together different things and then Unleash Your creativity in such a way that you're able to build something um that really replicates what you're what you're striving for uh another example I think is n8n uh which is also open source uh and these are both tools that I use um and I think this is exactly the sort of wrapper or software that sits on top of an llm I can go through llms and models like there's no tomorrow I have no Allegiance or loyalty to any of them but somehow I keep using tools like this all the time um and I think that that is probably one of the largest opportunities in WordPress is the idea of some of these workflow tools or workflow patterns of evolving to allow us to really use like a no code uh approach to how we put together um more complex agentic or AI driven workflows that then really execute what we want with this this kind of flexibility uh for for different scenarios and different outcomes and piecing it all together I think this is really where um the potential and and you know I've had this in my report where you have op take a quadrant open source versus closed Source uh Point feature versus ecosystem um if if you take the foundation you take the plugins that we already have today you add on workflow uh you add Point features you add um the Eco system tools that such are the ones I mentioned uh or other agentic sort of layers you get to this place that is just impossible for almost any other CMS to try and compete with um I'm absolutely sure of that so to me that is the the 100x play uh here for WordPress that is very very hard and has high barrier entry uh for any other project out there um I'll drop the the AI optimism for a moment uh drop to and and move on to my other uh predictions uh now for hot takes or anti-hot takes I guess uh I don't expect anything crazy with regards to forks I realized this may be kind of an anti- prediction but if history is the best predictor um you know we may experience a few Forks similar to a classic press but nothing that will disrupt were press in it uh itself in my opinion and this is where I think some of the the stuff I talked about before comes into focus more uh if anything we'll see some solutions become more popular or temporarily attract more attention than WordPress itself uh and historic examples could be jQuery over JavaScript or react over JavaScript or really like the biggest one in my opinion uh nextjs uh on top of react uh just completely taking over uh react as a as a framework which is really really impressive now in WordPress that has historically been jetpack yast Elementor maybe a you know a few others um but I'm really interested what the two three next big plays for WordPress will be in this space I'm I'm I'm I'm much more seeing something like that than let's say Forks or whatever and I think both of these solutions could be in the agentic OR ecosystem AI Place uh my next one uh I should I should have changed the number this is four actually not three uh but pure headless will CMS will become obsolete uh absolutely like we're already seeing this now where uh all these pure play Headless cms's that existed before are shifting to hybrid model same as WordPress uh whereas headless and traditional template um so really focusing on this very visual experience to construct web experiences um and I I'm not not even sure which of the large CM uh headless cms's out there which were headless first um are are still pure play um I don't even think that's there and that's very interesting to me because all a sudden they're having to play this massive catch-up game uh which is is quite tough um especially when you consider things like the block editor fulls side editing and everything that came before it to even make it possible um so yeah it's it it was a very very big hype which is not necessarily doing well now um so yeah very very curious about how that plays out but for me pure play Headless is I mean it will absolutely be obsolete by then but if not now already and lastly um yeah I I I spoke to it a bit about a bit about it before but the scarcest resource really being attention and WordPress doesn't really have that in on at the consumer level for new customers and and I think in a short term everything I spoke of really benefits Enterprise like that's where the largest opportunity is uh when when you compare WordPress to other Enterprise cms's um WordPress is a lot more attractive from a no code perspective ease of use getting started uh and then from a consumer perspective is quite hard but I think there's an opportunity here where in the short term in the next one two years Enterprise does extremely well uh for WordPress but as the learnings come in as AI comes in and assuming we do a good job and you see more of this kind of Zu UI Zer UI um approach take place where AI is just able to do more of the work and um abstract that away from your field of view as a user we may actually then see a push back towards consumer that is and quite successful so that would be my you know 2030 kind of vision where consumer comes back and becomes more popular than it is or a lot more popular than it is today anyway uh I probably over time um so yeah hope that was uh useful happy to get feedback thoughts all that like just just very relaxed session and yeah thank you for listening um super appreciate it and let's keep going all right righty I've snuck back in on stage next to you uh thank you very much n um I think we are just setting up the next session um and so whilst we're doing that uh uh we can hop over into the uh Q&A uh a couple of questions actually not asking uh if you could just repeat the names of the AI tools that you showcased there for folks in chat who want to go check them out yeah absolutely um so the on on the image generation side the my favorite tool by far is Mid Journey uh which is mid journey.com or available over Discord um if you are trying to run it yourself or sorry if you're trying to do image generation yourself um the the most popular model I think right now is flux um you can do a lot of controlling of the image with control net which is models you attach to it um and then that you will potentially run through something like comfy UI uh which is very cool now the workflow tool I talked about which is probably what some a lot of you are interested in and I'd really recommend everyone to at least create one workflow on something like this where you're you know creating your own agent uh for any of your like personal things or whatever is n n just three characters uh and you can and that is open source you can run it off Docker or whatever uh and have your own instances and it's that is that is something I'd say try to do that uh as soon as you can it's kind of like when ass sass came out for C you know for CSS and everybody's like oh I don't want to touch that it's it looks really complicated or whatever just just pull rip off the Band-Aid and you know try to figure this out and actually run uh one or two workflows all right I'm getting called over to the next session there's a few there's there is a fair few um questions in the QA section on the right there now so uh feel free to um uh carry on chatting in chat and answering those um I'm GNA uh take you off stage and um I'm Gonna Leave Myself hop over to the next room and call everyone over uh so see you for the uh in the next session in a moment everybody, Where will WordPress be in 2030?, Human Made, 01jnyrm1ts8287w3z0rkpqhafq.
