I want to share one of the worstsoftware habits I've ever had I used topop up tabs constantly when I wasbrowsing the web if a window got toomany tabs I'd make a new window and thenI'd fill up that one too week after weekI'd do this I could end up with dozensand dozens of open tabs eventually thebrowser gets so slow that I'd quit usingthat browser and switch to a differentbrowser so I'd fill up Safari ditch itfill up Chrome ditch it fill up Firefoxditch it Philip Brave I think you knowwhere I'm going then when I've got nobrowsers left I'd go back to Safari
where I just close all those precioustabs and forget about all of them nowhopefully you're not that bad but safeto say a lot of us are neck deep in tabsand tabs are being used in a way thatI'm sure nobody ever intended them to bein this video I'm going to talk aboutthe tab problem the tab solution and howthe web browser can be a betterworkspace and place to think hi I'm NickMilo and I'm here to help you do yourbest thinking and most inspired workmore often let's let's take a moment to
understand tabs a bit tabs were notdesigned to be a way to manageinformation they were just a simple wayto flip between a few pages but browsershave become Information Managementsystems for most of us they're the mainway we access information and the thingis they are bad information managementsystems and one of the chief reasonsthey are so bad is you guessed it tabs Imean how many tabs you have open rightnow go look post your number down in thecomments below actually I asked the
community this and about half of you 44had more than 13 tabs open another 21 ofyou had 6 to 12 open which is stillquite a lot Tabs are essentially a pileof pages your browser is a workspace wedo a lot of thinking here so yourworkspace becomes the equivalent of adesk with piles of stuff on it plenty ofbrilliant people work this way so youknow don't beat yourself up over thistoo much if this is how you work but Ithink tabs make us feel confused overoverwhelmed and a little disheartened
sometimes because you end up playingthis information management game thatyou are just slowly and inevitablylosing so the tab problem is thisbrowsers are bad information managementsystems and the main reason they're sobad are tabs so if that's the problemwhat's the solution I think the bestsolution is a new tool a browser that isdesigned as an information managementsystem as a workspace and that browserexists and it's called Arc now Arc is
Mac only right now but a Windows versionis coming soon it is an invite only betaso you need to join the waitlist or getan invite from someone already using itArc is a chromium-based browser so underthe hood it's all Google Chrome meaningthat your extensions if you use anythey're all going to work arc's big ideais that it merges tabs with bookmarksand then orders them in a cohesive wayand it does some cleanup for you I'llexplain all that shortly it's a uniqueinterface and it may cause you a bit of
frustration because we're so used to theold way the tab way but I'm hoping thisvideo will lessen that frustration and Iassure you that the minor learning curveis well worth it so how does Arc workTabs are gone from the top and they nowlive along the side this is surprisinglygreat because managing Pages verticallyis just simply better than managing themhorizontally you can see all the textfor starters or at least enough of itand it's quicker and easier to dragstuff up and down than it is side to
side now think about it you can putpages in folders and open or close themas you see fit you can select severalPages at once and close them basicallythe way that you manage files already onyour computer you can now do that withyour browser tabs it's like finally inArc there are three types of tabs let'stalk this through because it might soundkind of weird but it's pretty simple youcan make these buttons at the top foryour priority sites these are calledfavorites lots of people will want theiremail there or slack or their calendar
or Spotify these buttons are actuallylike bookmarks and tabs at the same timewhoa these stay here until you removethem so if you close one of these tabsby hitting command W you've closed thewindow but the button stays put becauseit's also a bookmark in order to removeit you have to right click it andarchive it if this seems confusing orodd once you understand how thisinterface Works overall it will makesense this middle section these arecalled pinned tabs and they are similar
to the favor buttons with one differenceI'll get to shortly then in this bottomsection these are the old fashioned tabswe love and hate when you make a new tabit appears down here and they close likenormal tabs and ladies and gentlemenhere's the twist these tabs Auto closeafter a certain amount of time thedefault is 12 hours which I find a bitshort I set it to 24 hours and I'm happywith that you can make it a week or evena month you'll be surprised at how infrequently you notice these tabs Auto
closing so the arc browser does somecleanup for you and protects you fromyourself and if you want to pin one ofthese tabs just drag it up here want itto be a button yep drag it up here andclose tabs are all still readilyaccessible in your archive which is verysimilar to history you can reopen byhitting command T which is the shortcutfor a new tab so if you think oh wheredid that Wikipedia page go command Ttype some bit of the name and boom it
reopens now it seems kind of trivial tocall this the archive but that'sactually an interesting conceptual shiftall the pages that come through yourbrowser become part of your archive yourbrowsing becomes a searchable index yourown little library now I suspect thisfeature isn't quite fully cooked yet butI think the archive feature is quitepromising and you can switch among opentabs with control tab similar to
switching among apps this actually looksa lot like the Windows app switcher youshould try it out now Good Start RightArc makes tabs easier to manage itcleans up some of your messes and itgives you a good way to access those oldclosed tabs but you might be thinkingnot a lot of space over here right seemslike this sidebar will get crowded andconfusing well actually no because youhave as many bars as you need arc hasspaces if you swipe left or right with atrackpad or hold shift and scroll with
the mouse wheel you can flip betweenthese spaces and those favorite buttonsat the top they persist across allspaces you can always get to those butthe rest of the buttons only appear inthe space you put them in so you canhave a workspace with slack and Gmailand figma and you can have a play spacewith YouTube and Discord and Twitterjust hit this plus button and make a newspace and you can name them give them anicon give them a color and check outthis detailing you can even add noise to
the color to give it some cool texturethis program is filled with thesedelightful little details like thisthese developers really put a lot oflove into this program now to rearrangeSpaces by the way you can just click anddrag the icons also it's quick and easyto hide this sidebar you hit command swhich is save historically but we mostlydon't need to do that in web browsers soit's really an underused hotkey so the Sstands for sidebar and it's very easy to
get to this with your hand then you arein this full screen immersiveenvironment this just feels better thanhaving all that browser UI junk aroundyou it's so much nicer for focused workif you need to work in figma for a bitlet's say you can just hide everythingelse and just concentrate on that justlike you're in a dedicated desktop appthis sidebar it's basically theinterface everything is here what thesefeatures thus far do is this they let
you spatially arrange the pages in yourworkspace and you can hide the stuffthat you don't need right now it isclunky or impossible to do this withtraditional browser tabs those are thefundamentals of the arc browser Arctakes those windows that were floatingaround in the tab bar and in differentwindows and in your bookmark bar andyour history and it puts them into anordered and cohesive space just thisalone is an upgrade from the otherbrowsers but Arc is way better than this
around these big core features theysomehow have added lots of smaller andequally great features Arc isexceptional for focused work because itreduces clutter and it has this greatfull screen mode but sometimes we'remultitasking sometimes we're doing lightwork and we want to watch Netflix at thesame time so it's equally great for allthose multitasking activities anothercool feature that I use numerous timesper day is picture in picture so ifyou're watching a video and you switchto a different page age you get this
awesome pop-up video player I've beenreally surprised at how much I love thishow seamlessly it works it's great forwork like watching a tutorial while youwant to work on the application you'rein at the same time and it's great forplay sometimes I'll have a TV showrunning here while I'm doing somecleanup stuff on the computer equallynice Spotify controls will stay overhere in your sidebar it's these littletouches that make this browser intosomething truly truly special Arc hasanother amazing and yet simple thing
that no other popular browser hassplit views I'm on YouTube and I want tosort email at the same time I can justopen a split view and I've got them bothanother thing that helps prevent tabhoarding is a feature called little Archit command option n anywhere starttyping a site name and boom you get thismini browser with almost no UI if I wantto check a movie time let's say I canjust pop up a little Arc I can take alook I can close it done it's a simpleway to keep unimportant tabs from
getting mixed up with all the importantones here's another brand new featureThey just added right now Peak if youclick a link to another site you getthis pop-up preview you click away andit's gone so great we are entering thehome stretch friends just a quickmention of some other notable featuresfirstly for obsidian users here's afantastic one hit command option shift Cand you get a markdown link you get thepage title with a link I use this all
the time it's incredibly handy and youcan also hit command shift C to just getthe URL also over here on the left issomething called the library which hasscreenshots even your desktop and alsoyour downloads the most notable featurehowever is called easel which lets yougrab screenshots and type text and drawlines and arrows it's kind of likecanvas in obsidian I've not gotten intousing this but something I really like
here is that it maintains links to whereeverything came from so when you take ascreenshot you can easily get back tothe original Source that's whoa that'sreally amazing and screenshots they areawesome in Arc look at how your cursorsnaps to Regions and then you choosewhat you want to do with the capturethere it is the best solution to the tabproblem is the arc browser I stronglyrecommend checking it out it rethinks
how we interact with the internet andwith information and it's a really nicecompliment and it's a part of yourpersonal Knowledge Management Systembecause it creates a new informationrealm where most everything you'veencountered can be found in a way thatfeels rather orderly it's different ittakes some getting used to but I thinkit's clearly better once you do get usedto it it's now my daily personal browserit's hugely impressive and yes it's
still in beta somehow even if you'dnever try Arc browser I think one day inthe future you'll be using some of thesefeatures in whatever browser you'reusing because I suspect the big boyswill be stealing them they're just toogood thank you so much for your timeeveryone I look forward to seeing youagain and until then stay connectedthank you[Music]
