All right, guys. So, today I'm going tobe blowing the lid off of one of thebiggest scams in modern society.Spending $100,000 and four years of yourlife on a degree that's worth less thanwhat you can get for free online rightnow. And look, I'm not here to sugarcoatthis. Higher education has become aracket that's leaving students drowningin debt while teaching them outdatedskills that employers don't even want.
But here's the thing that nobody'stelling you. Some of the world's bestuniversities are giving away their mostvaluable courses completely free. Nocatches, no free trials that need yourcredit card, no hidden fees, just purehigh-quality education that can actuallyhelp you get hired. And today, I'm goingto be breaking down 10 completely freeuniversity courses that are better thanpaid degrees in many cases.
And I'll tell you exactly why each one of thesebeats the hell out of a lot of thoseexpensive degrees. And if this videosaves just one person from wasting theirmoney on a useless degree, then I thinkit's worth it. So, hit that like buttonand let's save somebody $100,000 in thenext 20 minutes. All right, first up.
We've got MIT's Introduction to ComputerScience through their open coursewareplatform. Now, here’s the deal. First ofall, MIT is for absolute brainiacs, andthey charge $50,000 a year to attend inperson, but they’re giving away theexact same course materials, lectures, and assignments completely free online. Now, this isn’t some watered downversion. This is the real deal — thesame foundational CS knowledge thatpowers the tech industry. And you’lllearn algorithms, data structures, andcomputational thinking exactly how MITstudents learn. And yes, you’re notgoing to get the teacher to give youfeedback, but let’s be real, you’dlikely be in a classroom of a hundred peopleanyway, so you’re not going to get thatmuch one-on-one time in the first place.
The big difference is, you’re not dropping$200,000 for the privilege. You’re goingto be learning at your own pace, focusing on material that actuallymatters for your career. And I can tellyou that employers in tech care way moreabout what you can do than where yourdegree is from. So show them theprojects that you built from this course, and they won’t care if you neverStep foot on a college campus. Now, thisisn't just for coding nerds either.
Understanding computational thinking isvaluable across pretty much everyindustry now. And it's really thefoundation of what you need beforespecializing in anything tech-related,from AI to game development. So,opportunity score, I'm going to givethis one a solid 9 out of 10. The onlything you're missing here is networkingand, of course, a fancy piece of paper.
Now, by the way, I have a master guidethat's updated with the best free orextremely affordable resources online. We're talking certificates, certifications, and online courses. Andyou can check out that master guide inthe description and the pinned commentbelow. And I'm always keeping itupdated. So, make sure you check it nowand check it in the future. All right.
Course number two is Open Source SocietyUniversity, specifically CSPATH. Now,most people have never heard of this. It's the Open Source SocietyUniversity's Computer Science Path onGitHub. And this isn't just one freecourse. It's an entire computer sciencedegree curriculum built from the best.
There are free courses available online. So, we'retalking about a complete education from introprogramming all the way through advancedalgorithms. I would actually arguethat this may be better than most paidCS degrees because it’s constantlyupdated by actual developers who knowwhat skills are needed in the realworld, not academics who used to becomputer programmers 20 years ago. Right? When you pay $50,000 for a CS degree, half of what you’re learning will beoutdated by graduation. With OSSU,you’re getting cutting-edge materialthat evolves with the industry.
Another massive advantage is that you canskip all the general educationrequirements and other classesthat most universities require you to takejust to squeeze more tuition out of you.I mean, to make you a well-rounded,educated student, right? Every minuteyou spend learning is directly relevantto becoming a better developer, andthat’s the way it should be. So, yeah,I’m going to give this one a 9.5 out of10 opportunity score. Obviously, computer science development is notgoing to be for everyone, but this oneis super valuable. Now, by the way,Guys, if you’re curious about how I’vegrown this YouTube channel and how Imake these videos so entertaining yeteducational, I am going to be hosting alive YouTube training on Tuesday at 9:00
p.m. Eastern Standard Time where Ibasically just revealed the exactstrategies that I used to grow mychannel to multiple six figures permonth. So, that’s another free trainingfor you. Course number three is going tobe Stanford Machine Learning. And thisone is actually on YouTube. Now, this istaught by the absolute gigachad AndrewIng. He is one of the founders ofCoursera, and he’s also one of the world’sleading machine learning experts. So heis literally on the cutting edge ofartificial intelligence, machinelearning, and all that gigabrain stuffthat you hear about. So he isn’t justsome random professor, right? He’s oneof the pioneers in this industry, andhe’s led AI teams at freaking Google.
Now, most boot camps and even manyuniversity courses will teach you how touse machine learning libraries, but theyskip over the mathematical foundationsthat help you actually understand what’shappening under the hood.
Where this course absolutely demolishespaid alternatives. Andrew Ing breaksdown complex mathematical concepts in away that’s digestible without dumbing itdown. And you’ll understand the whybehind machine learning, not just thehow. And let me be crystal clear here. This deep understanding is whatseparates the $60,000-a-year jobs fromthe $200,000-a-year jobs, right? Anybodycan import a library and call afunction. The real value is knowingwhich algorithms to use and how tooptimize them. So yeah, I’m going togive this one a 9 out of 10 opportunityscore. The only downside is you willneed to supplement this with more recentdevelopments in deep learning, but thefoundations here are rock solid.
All right, the next course is the Yalefinancial markets course. So this isgoing to be a little bit of change ofpace. We’re going to be talking aboutfinance and economics, not tech. Now,this is available completely free onYouTube, and it’s taught by a NobelPrize-winning economist, Robert Schiller. And this is a perfect example of howfree online education can actually bebetter than expensive alternatives.
When you take a finance course at mostuniversities, you're learning fromprofessors who might be academicallybrilliant but have zero real-worldexperience. Robert Shiller, on theother hand, not only predicted the 2008housing crisis, but he spent decadesstudying market behavior. He bringsinsights that go far beyond textbookfinance. What I love about thiscourse is that it doesn’t just teach youthe mechanics of financial markets; itgives you a deep understanding of whymarkets behave the way they do. Thepsychological element is somethingthat's usually missing from traditionalfinance or economic education. Whetheryou're looking to work in
finance or you just want to manage yourown investments better, this coursegives you an Ivy League qualityeducation without the Ivy League pricetag. So, I’m going to give this one an 8out of 10. That’s a very solidscore, by the way. The only reason Idon't give it a higher rating is just because Ithink a lot of people probably aren'tgoing to be interested in this orinterested in going into a career pathrelated to it. Now, this video would notIt would be incomplete without the next one on thislist. This is an absolutely epicorganization, and that is Free CodeCamp, and it's their full curriculum.
Now, Free Code Camp, or FCC, offers acompletely free comprehensive codingeducation that covers everything frombasic HTML to advanced machine learning. But what makes it special is that it'sentirely project-based. You don't justlearn the concepts; you immediatelyapply them by building real projects.
By the time you finish theircurriculum, you'll have a portfolio ofover 30 projects that demonstrate yourskills to employers. And I can honestlysay that most $10,000 boot camps areprobably just repackaging the sameinformation that you can get for free onFree Code Camp, but just with a fancymarketing department and a hefty pricetag. Now, the other killer advantage ofFree Code Camp is the built-incommunity. You've got forums, chatrooms, and meetups where you can connectwith other learners. Sometimes you canfind mentors, and you can even get jobreferrals. Now, the proof is in thepudding. Free Code Camp has helpedthousands of people land developer jobs.
At companies like Microsoft, Google,Spotify, etc. Their curriculum isconstantly updated to reflect currentindustry needs. These guys are awesome. I've studied a ton of stuff onFree Code Camp. I'm not even sure howthey're able to operate. I think theyrely on donations and funding, but I'mnot exaggerating when I say that this islegitimately better than many computerscience degrees that cost $100,000. 10out of 10. All right. So, the next onemight surprise you because this is adegree that I've dunked on many times onthis channel, but I'm not talking abouta degree here. I'm talking about Yale'sintroduction to psychology on YouTube.
You might be thinking, "Shane, whatthe hell does psychology have to do withgetting a job? And also, Shane, haven'tyou made fun of psychology degrees likea hundred times on this channel? Well, Iactually think that psychology is asuper valuable skill. Understandinghuman behavior is a superpower invirtually any field. Whether you're inmarketing, management, design, orcustomer service, knowing what drivespeople's decisions gives you a massiveadvantage.
A college degree and paying $100,000 tolearn it. With that being said, I thinkpsychology is super interesting, andYale's course covers everything fromcognitive development and brainstructure to social psychology andmental health. But unlike manypsychology programs that focus purely ontheory, this course consistentlyconnects concepts to real-worldapplications. And what makes this betterthan paid alternatives is that you'regetting one of the world's bestpsychology courses without the fluffthat universities add to stretch it intoa 4-year degree. So, I'm going to givethis one an opportunity score of 7.5 outof 10. It's not directly vocational.
It's right. It's not going to directlyget you a job, but I think it's going tobe useful in almost any career path orany career field. So, just for thosepeople out there that think I'm like asocial sciences hater, you know, I hateall the social sciences. I don't. Ithink they're really cool. And here's anexample of that. All right. Next isgoing to be MIT Sloan School ofManagement Lectures. And this isavailable for free through MIT Open.
Courseware. So, an MBA from MIT will setyou back about $140,000 in tuitionalone, not counting the two years oflost income and the extra costsassociated with it. But guess what? Manyof their best business courses areavailable completely free online. Andthese lectures cover everything fromentrepreneurship and marketing tofinance and operations management. Soyou’re getting insights from the sameprofessors who teach in one of theworld’s top business schools. And whatmakes this better than paid alternativesis that most business degrees are paddedwith unnecessary courses and outdatedcase studies. And with MIT’s open
courseware, you can focus specificallyon topics that are relevant to yourcareer goals. Now, the other advantageis that you can apply what you’relearning to real business situationsimmediately rather than spending yearsin a classroom before putting knowledgeinto practice. So, I really like thisone. I’m going to go ahead and give itan opportunity score of 9 out of 10.Obviously, this one would be better forthe business-minded people andspecifically people who want to be inEither executive positions or managementpositions. All right, next is going tobe Harvard's legendary CS50 curriculum.
And there's a lot of different thingsthey cover. They cover computer sciencein general and they also cover thingslike game development. This isavailable on their website and also onYouTube. So just as an example, theintroduction to game developmentavailable free on YouTube is supervaluable. Now believe it or not, thegaming industry is now bigger than thefilm and music industries combined, andit generates over $180 billion a yearannually. Yet most computer scienceprograms barely touch on game
development. They treat it as a nicherather than a major tech sector. Allof the Harvard CS50 courses are allamazing, but this course specificallyteaches you game developmentfundamentals using industry standardtools like Unity and Lua. So, you'lllearn everything from basic 2D games, which by the way, those can sell likecrazy—think Angry Birds—to morecomplex 3D environments. What makesthis better than specialized gamedevelopment schools that charge $30,000.
A year, you're learning thefundamentals that transfer acrossplatforms and engines, not just specifictools that might be outdated in a fewyears. Plus, the projects you buildthroughout the course can go straightinto your portfolio, giving you tangibleevidence of your skills when applyingfor jobs. So, yeah, this one's prettyniche, but Harvard CS50 in general isamazing. I'm going to give it a 9 out of10.
Next is going to be the Web SecurityAcademy, and this one is by Portswiger, which is a little bit of a weird name, but these are the people who created theBurp Suite, which is the industrystandard web security testing tool. Andcyber security is one of the few fieldswith basically zero unemployment. If youhave cyber security skills, if you'regood at cyber security, you canbe the most useless person in theworld and you're still going to get ajob. Like, sorry, I don't mean to becritical here, but you couldliterally be the worst employeeever and they're still going to employyou. And I'm actually thinking ofspecific people right when I'm sayingthis. Companies are literally desperate.
For security professionals, theskill gap is only widening. Mostuniversity cyber security programs arehopelessly outdated. They're teachingyou concepts that were relevant a decadeago, but they don't addressmodern threats. However, Port Swigger's WebSecurity Academy, which is a bit of amouthful, is different. It's created byactual security professionals who are onthe front lines of detecting andpreventing web vulnerabilities everysingle day. The course includesinteractive labs that simulate real-worldscenarios, allowing you to practiceidentifying and exploiting security
flaws in a safe environment. You'lllearn everything from SQL injection tocross-site scripting, authenticationvulnerabilities, and access control. So,what makes this better than paidalternatives? One thing is that you getto dip your toe in cyber security andsee if it's for you. Additionally, it's thehands-on nature of the training. You'renot just reading about securityconcepts; you're actively practicing theskills that employers are looking for.So, yes, this one I have to give anopportunity score of 9 out of 10.
Security professionals are in extremelyhigh demand, and this course providespractical skills that many degreeprograms lack. All right, next is anabsolute OG. I’m sure probably 90% ofpeople watching this video know aboutthem, and that is Khan Academy. They aresome of the goats of free onlineeducation. They’re absolutely amazing. They’ve probably helped just abouteverybody here study for like a mathtest, a chemistry test, or a biologytest at some point in the past. And thisvideo would not be complete withoutthem. And Khan Academy does just abouteverything. They do mathematics,
chemistry, biology. They even touch oncomputer science and all kinds ofdifferent subjects like that. Now, ofcourse, they’re available for free onYouTube. They also have a website, and Ionly included them at the end because Ithink everybody knows about themalready. But yeah, their teaching isvery engaging. I love how they use theblackboard with the colored markers, andthey just do a great job of explainingthings. So, I’m going to give them ascore of 9.5 out of 10. All right, guys.Make sure you check out that master list.
There are many resources. It has all of my biggestrecommendations because, obviously, youknow, the subject or the field that youwant to go into may not have been inthis video, but there’s a ton of greatrecommendations down there. Now, onething a lot of these courses do lack isan actual certificate at the end andalso some brand name awareness, along withother help in actually landing the job. That is something that, for instance, the Google career certificates actuallyfill in pretty well. And those are veryaffordable, about $49 a month. If you’reinterested in hearing about the bestGoogle career certificates, I actuallymade a tier list which you can check outright here., YouTube Video qHwIiwjrT1I, YouTube, 01kac2jsfmhmsn6bnhk1ft5wp3.
