Being Cited Is the New Ranking #1

**Your SEO is fine yet most AIs have no idea you exist.**
That's the situation for most sites right now.
AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimization. It's how you get cited by AI assistants instead of ranked by Google. And here's the number that reframed everything for me: ***58% of Google searches now end in zero clicks.*** AI Overviews answers the question before anyone clicks through.
Your SEO score can be healthy while AI assistants completely ignore you. There's only a 45% overlap between brands Google ranks highly and brands AI assistants recommend. Those are two different lists.
**What AI sees when it looks at your pages**
AI assistants don't crawl pages the way Google does. They look for different signals. I've been mapping this as three layers.
1. **The technical foundation.** Can AI even access your content? A lot of sites block AI crawlers without realizing it. Beyond crawl permissions, there's `/llms.txt` (a plain-text file that tells AI assistants how to understand your site) and schema markup for structured context.
2. **Content structure.** This is where most of the leverage is. AI citation models favor content that leads with a direct answer in 40-60 words, then explains. Not a long buildup to the point. The answer first, then the context. A Princeton GEO study found that pages citing authoritative sources get cited by AI 40% more often. If you write about a topic and don't cite where the data came from, AI has less reason to trust you as a source.
3. **Owning terminology.** I've started calling this "dictionary definition heists." Pick specific terms in your niche that don't have clean, authoritative definitions anywhere. Write the best definition. Structure it so AI can extract it cleanly. Become the source of record. This is a longer game, but it compounds.
The underlying insight: **AI needs to extract a clean answer from your page.** If your content buries the point, AI moves on.
**How I measured this**
I wanted to measure it, not theorize about it. So I built a small AEO analytics tool that queries Gemini, ChatGPT, and Perplexity directly. It asks questions in my (or my clients) niche and checks whether those AI assistants mention or cite my (my clients) sites.
For the research phase I used [Librarium](https://github.com/jkudish/librarium), a multi-provider research CLI I recently open-sourced. Instead of manually reading what each AI engine recommends, I fanned queries out to 10 providers simultaneously. The patterns that showed up across multiple providers are more reliable than what any single one suggests.
Then I used a [Counselors](https://github.com/aarondfrancis/counselors) review on the content itself: three AI agents, each reviewing from a different angle. SEO specialist, content strategist, AI indexing expert. The disagreements were where the real insights lived. Two agents agreed the FAQ section was strong. The third pointed out that none of the questions were phrased the way a user would ask them.
**Platform-specific tactics**
Each AI assistant has its own citation preferences.
**ChatGPT:** 87.4% of AI referral traffic comes through Bing. Branded domains get cited 11% more often than generic ones. Freshness matters; content updated within the last 30 days gets cited 3.2x more than stale pages.
**Perplexity:** FAQ schema consistently drives higher citation rates. Perplexity pulls from sources that answer questions directly. If your content structure matches how people ask questions, you're ahead.
**Google AI Overviews:** E-E-A-T signals dominate. Topical authority clusters (writing deeply about one area instead of broadly about many) carry more weight than single-page optimizations.
**Claude:** Uses Brave Search as a backend. Favors high factual density. The more verifiable claims per paragraph, the better.
A quick self-check I've started running before publishing anything I want AI to cite, and I recommend this for my clients: CRASP. Clarity, Relevance, Authority, Structure, Precision.
***Being great at SEO and invisible to AI are not mutually exclusive. They're increasingly common together.***
You don't need to rebuild your whole site. Start with one page. Add a direct-answer lead in the first paragraph. Cite the data you're referencing. Structure it so AI can extract a clean quote. Check whether AI assistants mention it in two to four weeks. If you want help with this, please [reach out](https://jkudish.com/).
