Let's Talk About WordPress and AI

I keep seeing people say WordPress is done. That AI can generate a whole website now, so why would anyone need a CMS at all?
I have been building websites for 20 years. I have tested almost everything out there. And as of today, I still have not found a better solution for publishing content than WordPress.
A lot is changing, for sure. But AI is not what kills WordPress.
#### What AI actually threatens
If Claude Code and similar tools are going to kill anything, it is more likely Webflow or Framer. Those quick landing pages that used to justify reaching for a visual builder? You can generate those with AI now. Faster, cheaper, no vendor lock in.
I have tested Webflow, Framer, Wix, Squarespace, and more. They are great for smaller sites and landing pages. But they are a nightmare for clients to maintain. We have moved a lot of websites back to WordPress because clients hated the lack of flexibility, could not find developers to extend their sites, or simply found it too hard to manage their own content.
That said, if you are building a simple marketing site or a portfolio, those tools can work great. The problems show up when you need something bigger.
#### Where WordPress still wins
For bigger builds, sites with a lot of editorial content, teams that need to manage and visually edit their pages, you need a CMS with a clear interface, and you don't have a budget for something completely custom. At least for now, nothing does this better.
With the block editor, it has been a breath of fresh air for clients. They can edit every part of their site. Custom functionality lives in plugins that move from one theme to another. Content is separated from design, so you can update the look without touching a single post.
If you have had a bad experience with WordPress, it is probably because you have not used it in a while, you relied on bloated page builder plugins, or the site was not built properly in the first place.
I work with real clients every day. None of them want to write prompts to publish an article. They want to click, edit, and hit publish. And on the development side, building a custom CMS with Claude Code might work as a proof of concept, but maintaining it, keeping it secure and fast, updating it as standards change, that is a different story.
For now, if websites still need to publish content, a battle tested CMS is not going anywhere.
#### WordPress might actually be built for the AI era
Here is something people overlook. If we need any CMS in the age of AI, WordPress might outlast them all.
Everything is already in the database in a structured way, easy for AI to work with and plug into. All blocks are code markup, simple for AI to generate and modify. AI does not have to fight WordPress. It can make WordPress better.
#### What could actually kill WordPress
The real threat is not AI replacing WordPress. It is a shift in how we publish content.
This is already happening. People post articles on X (like this one). They send exclusive newsletters instead of publishing on their websites. The personal website as a content hub is slowly fading for some.
But I think that is a mistake. We should own our platforms and our content. People found out with TikTok how fragile it can be. You can lose everything overnight when you build entirely on someone else's platform.
#### The real questions
The questions I think about are not whether WordPress survives AI. I think it will.
The bigger questions are different. Will we think about websites the same way we do today? Will we publish as much content as we publish now? And how will WordPress adapt to a world where the way people create and consume content keeps shifting?
