She defines democratizing AI through six key principles: accessibility, affordability, education, ethical AI, and community contribution. Her career pivot came from viewing data as business insight rather than mere information, leading to a master's degree from University of Minnesota. She argues AI won't replace developers due to reliability limitations, instead envisioning a transformational shift where AI serves as an assistant tool. Current productivity gains come from tools like ChatGPT for ideation, GitHub Copilot for coding, and low-code solutions like Bubble.io for rapid prototyping. The discussion emphasizes responsible AI implementation through iterative development, business user involvement, and continuous ethical questioning of AI outputs to ensure fair treatment and appropriate solutions. ## ๐Ÿ—’๏ธ Notes #### โฑ๏ธ [00:19](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJdDc28Kum8?t=19) โ€” [H1] Professional background introduction - AI democratization requires making artificial intelligence accessible, affordable, educational, ethical, and community-driven beyond just technical practitioners - Developers won't be replaced by AI but will undergo transformation to work alongside AI as an assistant tool, since AI lacks the reliability and accuracy of human intelligence - Successful AI implementation demands strategic planning, responsible scaling, iterative development with business user involvement, and continuous ethical questioning of outputs ## ๐Ÿ“ฐ Newsletter **AI as Developer Assistant: Building Responsibly for the WordPress Community** The conversation around AI replacing developers continues, but practitioners like Dhivya Nagasubramanian offer a more nuanced perspective: AI should enhance, not replace, human developers. This aligns perfectly with WordPress's community-first approach to technology. **Key Takeaway**: The "3 A's, 2 E's, 1 C" framework for democratizing AIโ€”accessibility, affordability, education, ethical AI, and community contributionโ€”mirrors WordPress's own values of democratizing publishing. **Practical Applications**: - Use AI tools like GitHub Copilot to accelerate WordPress development while maintaining code quality - Apply the iterative mindset to WordPress AI integrations, involving end users in testing and feedback - Question AI suggestions for accessibility compliance and inclusive design **Community Connection**: Just as Dhivya emphasizes attending developer conferences, engaging with WordPress community events helps developers stay current with responsible AI implementation practices. I'm here with Diva. We're going to talk about AI careers, democratizing AI, productivity, and more. Diva, please introduce yourself to the ATO community. >> Hey, uh this is Diva Naga Subramanyan. In the last 15 years, uh I had been in the intersection of data technology and the business strategy and I'm a person who is passionate about data and had been working with data analytics and uh **[00:32]** the data science and AI throughout my career and uh yes uh that's that's about me to introduce myself and I have done my uh masters uh from University of Minnesota and also have a business communication uh certification from the Howard University. >> Awesome. Congrats. So you're passionate about democratizing AI. We'll get to that in just a moment. But I want to know what did your path to becoming a practitioner in AI and machine learning look like? So as I said in my introduction right like uh I had been working with the data all my time but **[01:04]** it's just that one perception changed when I started thinking about data as not just data and started thinking about what does this mean to the business I'm working for for the organization I working for and how can I transform this for them to give a meaningful insight so that they grow and along with that I grow right so that was a pivotal moment in my life where I took that a step back after 10 years in my career and then I said like wait a minute I need to go harness this skill or hone my skills on **[01:36]** what I know already. So I did my master's degree from the University of Minnesota and that just accelerated my you know my path in the AI IML field. I'm really proud that like I took that big step from stepping back from my um day job to a full-time student and be where I am today. >> That's great. Uh so with that experience do you have any advice for those looking to get into AI and machine learning careers? >> Sure. Uh that's that's one piece of advice that I have is like uh I'm sure everyone who is in technology have **[02:07]** access to the data and it's just a mindset shift like instead of like looking data as just a mere piece of information uh just transforming it just start looking at like what does this mean to the underlying business and how can I even in a smaller way use this data for the betterment of the business. So uh I think that's one thing and now the AI community is like so open-source and they are so welcoming people and I would say that like start attending **[02:39]** conferences more like a developer conference so that you get a hands-on experience or the field and after that you can strategize about how you can uh apply that to your business. >> I want to dive deeper into democratizing AI. What does that mean to you and what actions can our listeners take to help with this mission? >> Oh I love the topic. uh I have to say that democratizing AI means that just making AI accessible to everyone other than the AI practitioner themselves. I love the idea of open sourcing it. Um **[03:09]** and in my mind uh democratizing means three A's uh two E's and one C and the A stands for uh accessibility and affordability and E stands for education and ethical AI and C stands for what we are doing here right like the community contribution AI education I feel is really important and it should be there and it should be even accessible not just to the technology folks but it should be accessible to the younger generation. eration and should be **[03:40]** starting introducing AI in schools and um since I'm here I wanted to share that like I had been doing putting on an consistent effort outside my work to actually make AI education accessible through my by building an app for elementary middle school and high schooler kids who can just like use it like a dualingo app right just log in and have their own bits of like uh treats of AI every day dose of AI How do they get the app? >> So, the app is in still in progress. Got **[04:11]** it. >> I'm building it out and it would be out soon uh in all the app stores. >> Perfect. There's a lot of discussion about AI's role in development. Do you think AI will replace developers one day? >> I don't think so. AI hasn't yet mature. I mean, it's not 100% right all the time. Of course, it is creative uh to some extent, but not reliable and accurate. uh as human developers I would still say that like uh the development will never go away to AI completely but I think there would be a transformationational shift that would **[04:41]** happen from what it is from what we call developers today to developers tomorrow as we transition. So I I believe AI should not be seen as a competition uh but it should be an assistant tool used and still we would need human intelligence uh we would need developers in my opinion. >> Love it. What's a new tool you've been using lately to boost your productivity? >> In my day-to-day work, I use of course uh chat GPT to you know get idea on my thoughts, get feedback on my thoughts and like just pro questions and get it **[05:13]** answered quickly. I use uh for coding I use a GitHub copilot uh that's like uh it helps me with the coding and for my app I use a low code or no code solutions like bubble bubble AI tools uh which helps me like quick prototyping quick MEPs so yeah I it's it's there everywhere in my life >> it's great our audience loves to know what other people use to get through the day so uh do you have a tip best practice or piece of advice that you can share with the all things open community >> one thing that I can say is like build a **[05:44]** solution with a strategy and scale it with responsibility because uh often times the ethical and responsibility is like I would say like it's the effect of it is minimized when and we all jump into a quick solutioning right like so I would say that like adopt an iterative mindset you cannot build a stellar solution the day one involve the business users who's going to use the solution make them feel comfortable that AI is not going to replace the job and it's just going to help them assist in **[06:16]** their day-to-day job. Not the least but the ethical and responsible AI should be the primary focus. Um, one should have that uh, you know, questioning capability. Even if a AI produces a result, one should question if it is ethically right or is it is it giving the right solution and it's treating everyone correctly. >> Divia, thanks for your time today. I really appreciate it. Oh, >> thanks. Thanks uh, Jason for this opportunity.
