[00:00] Paper pile has become an awesome
[00:01] academic powerhouse for writing and
[00:04] academia and research and this is how
[00:06] you use it. So when you log in it looks
[00:08] like this. So this is the web interface
[00:10] and also we'll go through the word
[00:13] interface as well. There's an addin
[00:14] which I think you'll love. So this is
[00:16] what it looks like on the web version of
[00:18] PayPal. And down the side here we've got
[00:21] everything we can do. So first of all we
[00:23] got home which really brings us to
[00:24] everything that they offer in a little
[00:27] um bite-sized chunk. So up here you can
[00:29] change grammar, you can rewrite stuff,
[00:31] you can write stuff, you can research
[00:32] stuff, and you can check for plagiarism.
[00:34] Yes, all of those things we will
[00:36] absolutely be using as academics. And
[00:39] then down here you've got your
[00:40] documents. And uh that's about it
[00:42] really. And then if you want to go a
[00:44] little bit deeper, there are a few
[00:45] things you can actually do. So you can
[00:47] chat with PDF, you can open a new web
[00:50] document, and down here we've got the
[00:52] different uh paper pal apps, Microsoft
[00:54] Word, Google Docs, Chrome Docs,
[00:57] [laughter]
[00:58] Google Docs, Chrome extension, and also
[01:01] if you've got a manuscript, you can
[01:02] check it for plagiarism, you can check
[01:04] it for AI, and you can do a submission
[01:06] check. And even down here, if you want
[01:08] to, you can get humans involved, real
[01:11] humans, to check over your work. And I
[01:14] love the fact that they offer that as a
[01:15] little bit of a sense check and an extra
[01:18] service. You don't have to use it, but
[01:20] it's great that it's there. So, let's
[01:22] have a look at this homepage a little
[01:24] bit closer, shall we? So, here we've got
[01:25] grammar, and it says here, type or paste
[01:28] text to run an uh academic grade
[01:30] language and grammar check. Oh, yes.
[01:32] Thank you. And you can also import a
[01:34] document. So, if you've got something
[01:36] that you're writing, let's say something
[01:37] like this. Um, you can just copy and
[01:39] paste it across or you can work with it
[01:41] in the actual document. So, all we have
[01:44] to do is put it in and we get specific
[01:45] grammar checks. And you can see once
[01:47] you've done that, it takes you into
[01:48] their editor. And this is where all the
[01:51] magic really happens because this is the
[01:53] document you're working on. Here are the
[01:56] uh suggestions that it thinks I should
[01:58] make to improve the grammar. And then
[02:00] look over here on this side, we've got
[02:03] all of these cheeky little buttons that
[02:05] we can push. Oh, we'll go into those in
[02:07] this video. Do not worry. But this is
[02:09] where it starts if you want. So, facial
[02:12] hair is currently a sexually dimorphic
[02:14] trait. Oh, yes. And anyway, so you can
[02:16] see it recommends we change paper to
[02:17] study. And we can accept all or we can
[02:20] reject all. We can accept that one. Yes,
[02:22] we can accept and we can accept. So,
[02:24] it's a really simple way to get those
[02:25] little changes made that make a huge
[02:27] difference. So, let's go back because
[02:30] then we want to do rewrite. Now, here is
[02:32] the stuff we want to rewrite. We can put
[02:34] it in here and we can click go and then
[02:36] it will take us to the same editor and
[02:39] this is what it looks like. So, facial
[02:40] hair is blah blah blah and it says
[02:42] rewrite for clarity. Um, and uh I think
[02:45] that it hasn't really done much I don't
[02:47] think. Let's have a look. Uh, generate.
[02:49] There we are. So, output the paraphrase
[02:51] and this is how we can paraphrase it.
[02:53] Okay, great. This is what it's given us.
[02:55] And then we'll say, yeah, we'll replace
[02:56] that. Why not? Let's go back. So that's
[02:58] rewrite. Then we've got write. So
[03:00] rewriting is really great if you're not
[03:02] quite sure if you're paraphrasing or
[03:04] just copying someone, by the way. Um and
[03:06] then we've got right here. So tell us
[03:08] what you want to write. So write a
[03:10] paragraph or draft a literature review.
[03:12] Use the attach file as content and draft
[03:14] a literature review on this topic. So we
[03:16] can add an attachment, which I really
[03:18] like. We can upload a file, but let's
[03:20] just say we want to write a paragraph on
[03:25] YouTube and
[03:27] mental
[03:32] health. Is that how you spell mental?
[03:34] Seems like mental is like anyway, like
[03:36] in the UK, you're like, "Oh, you're
[03:38] bloody mental, mate." Anyway, I I think
[03:40] I've spelled it right. Um, and this is
[03:42] what it ends up with. So, here you can
[03:44] see you can type or paste your text to
[03:46] receive language suggestions or here we
[03:47] are. This is what I've asked for. Write
[03:49] a paragraph on YouTube and mental
[03:50] health. And we can insert in. And there
[03:52] we are. YouTube has a complex
[03:53] relationship with mental health.
[03:54] Certainly my mental health, let me tell
[03:56] you that. Um, and then we've got all of
[03:58] this stuff down here. So, you can see
[04:00] it's really easy. Let's go back to home.
[04:02] We've also got research and we've also
[04:03] got plagiarism. Now, I won't go into
[04:05] these in this tab cuz I think it's
[04:07] better in other sort of like places. But
[04:10] that is everything you can do from the
[04:12] home tab, which I really, really like.
[04:14] But you'll notice that each time we push
[04:16] this, it takes us into the editor. So
[04:20] here here you can see um we've actually
[04:22] created all of these new different
[04:24] things. So created less than 10 10
[04:26] seconds ago was this one. And uh this is
[04:29] really where all of the magic for
[04:31] writing happens. So once you're in a
[04:34] little bit of a document here, you can
[04:36] see down the side we've got this tab.
[04:38] And if we expand it, we get edit,
[04:41] rewrite, write, research and site,
[04:43] translate. We've also got templates,
[04:45] which I really, really like. And we've
[04:47] got checks and chat with PDF. We've got
[04:50] everything we would want to use if we
[04:52] are working with a um academic document.
[04:56] So, let's go through these. Edit here.
[04:58] It says um these are the sort of things
[05:00] that we can edit and we can accept them.
[05:02] This is kind of like Grammarly. It's
[05:04] kind of like other editing tools, but
[05:06] it's nice that it's a succinct and
[05:08] specifically made for academia. I really
[05:10] like that that's in here. And also,
[05:12] we've got consistency as well. So,
[05:14] achieve consistency in writing style.
[05:16] Fix inconsistencies in your draft such
[05:18] as word forms, date formats, all of that
[05:20] sort of stuff. Yes, those are the really
[05:22] annoying things that editors,
[05:25] supervisors, other academics really
[05:28] don't like. They don't like
[05:29] inconsistency and it just gives them a
[05:31] reason to hate your paper. So, if you
[05:33] can fix them with a push of a button,
[05:36] why wouldn't you? Answer me that. All
[05:38] right, then. So, that's the edit um sort
[05:40] of tab. And then we've got rewrite. So,
[05:42] we can select any bit here and we can
[05:44] say paraphrase, improve fluency, make
[05:46] academic, simplify, trim, change tone or
[05:49] synonyms. So, let's just sort of like
[05:51] take this last one at the moment and
[05:53] just say improve fluency. And so, the
[05:55] platforms. Yeah. Okay, that's what I
[05:57] want. Generate. And then it will
[05:58] generate a more fluent um section and we
[06:01] can replace that. There we are. Replace.
[06:03] So, it's really easy to make sure that
[06:05] you are representing your work the way
[06:07] you want it to um sort of like be
[06:09] represented. If you're reading through
[06:11] something, you're like, you know what,
[06:12] that sentence, you know, maybe it needs
[06:14] to be made a little bit more academic.
[06:16] So, we can highlight it and click
[06:18] generate. And it's as easy then as
[06:19] pushing insert and replace. Replace.
[06:22] There we are. Thank you very much. It's
[06:24] in there. Now, you'll notice when you
[06:26] also hover over things, you'll get this
[06:28] little thing here, PayPal AI. We also
[06:31] can site stuff. You can also add a
[06:33] comment if you're working on this
[06:34] document with other people. We can also
[06:36] do everything you can do in a typical
[06:38] word um what you see is what you get
[06:41] kind of editor um and uh yeah like
[06:44] Google Docs for example. So I love the
[06:46] fact that you can do everything in the
[06:48] uh web interface. And so PayPal AI let's
[06:51] click here and you can see you get all
[06:53] pretty much all of these things here but
[06:55] you get it in a nice little drop-down
[06:57] thing here. Um, overall I think this is
[07:01] a really great way to be working with
[07:04] documents on a web interface. I've not
[07:06] seen anything that is as uh indepth and
[07:10] as useful as paper pal right now for the
[07:13] web interface. So let's go back to home
[07:16] and let's have a look to see what else
[07:17] we've got. So if you're working on a
[07:19] document, that's what you can do. And if
[07:20] you want to start a new web document,
[07:22] you click here. And isn't that really
[07:24] annoying that you have a blank page and
[07:27] you have to fill it? Well, don't panic.
[07:29] Don't panic, my little cherub. You can
[07:31] actually just create a template here.
[07:33] So, if you're working with um a blank
[07:36] page, let's expand this and let's go to
[07:38] templates. Templates here, you can see
[07:40] we've got outlines, we've got
[07:41] manuscript, section templates, we've got
[07:43] brainstorm, email, email, the journal,
[07:46] everything you would need typically as
[07:48] an academic working from scratch. So,
[07:50] let's go to outlines and let's say I'm
[07:52] writing a book chapter. Why not? And
[07:54] then I What is your subject area? um OPV
[07:57] devices and let's just see um describe
[08:00] your topic
[08:01] >> meanwhile.
[08:02] >> So I've said indoor applications of OPV
[08:04] devices and new materials for efficiency
[08:05] and let's just say generate. You can
[08:07] also attach a supporting file if you
[08:09] want it to sort of like copy or emulate
[08:11] a style of a particular journal. Um but
[08:14] here you can see it's created a nice
[08:16] outline for me. So now I don't have to
[08:19] worry about structure before writing
[08:21] because it will do it for me. Of course,
[08:23] I can disagree with this structure and
[08:25] say, "No, that isn't the thing I want to
[08:28] be using, but here you can see it is
[08:30] just very, very easy if I'm writing a
[08:33] book chapter in this case to get
[08:35] everything in the order that it thinks
[08:37] makes sense." And and let me tell you
[08:39] this, it is pretty darn good if you ask
[08:41] me, which you are hopefully asking me
[08:43] because you're on this video, in Okay,
[08:45] so now I've got it. All I have to do is
[08:47] go in and expand this stuff and I have a
[08:49] perfect structure to start my book
[08:52] chapter or whatever you are writing.
[08:54] You've also got here AI disclosure. You
[08:56] got manuscript section uh template. So
[08:59] here if you've got title, abstract,
[09:00] keywords, plain road, blah blah blah
[09:02] blah blah. Um and you've also got
[09:04] brainstorming. So how can Paper Power
[09:06] help? If you don't really know where to
[09:08] start, this is a really great place. Ask
[09:10] for advice, um improve your process, all
[09:13] of that sort of stuff. You can
[09:14] brainstorm it in here. And we've also
[09:16] got email and email the journal. So
[09:18] emails name blah blah blah describe what
[09:20] you should want to convey and it will
[09:22] make it nice and professional and
[09:23] academic just like you've been doing
[09:25] this for years. That's one thing I love
[09:27] about this. It kind of gives you the
[09:29] confidence to start doing things and
[09:31] trying things because ultimately it is
[09:33] just a steep learning curve the old
[09:36] academia isn't it? Anyway, so that's
[09:39] what we've got here. Now these are all
[09:41] of the things you can do back on the
[09:42] homepage. We've been through all of
[09:43] these in the editor and the um web sort
[09:46] of like interface. And down here you can
[09:48] see you've also got chat with PDF. So if
[09:50] you have got a PDF that you want to chat
[09:52] with, you can actually do that here. So
[09:55] let's have a look. Get started. Um it's
[09:57] setting some things up for me. Yes,
[09:59] thank you very much. And obviously I'll
[10:01] need to upload a PDF. So I'll put in one
[10:03] of my old documents. Let's see. Outputs.
[10:06] That goes here. Let's go in there. And
[10:08] then I can start chatting with that PDF.
[10:11] So, as it's uploading, we'll just wait.
[10:23] Do you like my new t-shirt? I made it.
[10:25] It's a bit bright, isn't it? I do like
[10:27] my bright t-shirts, though. But I sew
[10:28] these myself. So, I see the bright
[10:30] fabric and I'm like, I'm going to make
[10:32] myself a nice little t-shirt. And that's
[10:34] exactly what I did. All right, then. So,
[10:36] questions you can try. What are the main
[10:38] arguments of this study? So this is very
[10:41] much like a uh notebook LM in a little
[10:45] PDF uh input form. So here you can see
[10:48] you've got the different um things. Here
[10:50] you can add more sources as well. So you
[10:52] can upload and drag and drop multiple
[10:54] PDFs. But here I can say what are the
[10:56] main arguments in this study and then it
[10:58] will go away interrogate the document
[11:00] and chat with it. So, I love the fact
[11:02] that um you can add loads and loads of
[11:04] sources. And here you can upload to uh I
[11:07] think 150, no 500 pages per PDF. That's
[11:11] pretty good. And 249
[11:14] uploads remaining for the month. All
[11:15] right, then. That's quite a lot, isn't
[11:17] it? So, overall, this is sort of like a
[11:19] notebook LM, a little kind of like
[11:22] academic one where you can upload your
[11:24] PDF sources, get some um information,
[11:27] and interrogate a whole range of sources
[11:29] if you want. And you can see it's nicely
[11:31] referenced. You can hover over, you can
[11:33] see where it's referenced and taken the
[11:35] stuff from. If you click it, it'll
[11:36] actually take you to the bit where it
[11:38] actually said what it said. Um, and
[11:40] then, uh, once the PDF is open, you can
[11:43] actually in fact interact with the PDF.
[11:46] So, if you want to highlight over it
[11:47] like this, you can highlight over it
[11:49] like that. Um, and yeah, select text.
[11:52] Okay. Yeah. And then you can see you've
[11:54] got other stuff. Copy text, copy your
[11:56] citation, summarize, explain, paragraph,
[11:58] trim, make academic, all of that sort of
[12:00] stuff. So, you can hover over it like
[12:02] this. Hover. Hover. Hover. You can do
[12:08] this. I believe in you. And then that
[12:11] pops up automatically. And then that's
[12:13] what you can do. All right. Then, easy
[12:14] peasy lemon squeeze. You also get
[12:16] summary and also related papers. So,
[12:19] this is really great if you have a seed
[12:21] paper. This is kind of like their little
[12:23] taste of something like lit maps or
[12:25] research rabbit. You can see related
[12:27] papers and it will upload them in this
[12:30] um in this middle bit. And you can see
[12:32] here these are all of the papers that I
[12:34] really should know about. So it's
[12:36] starting to go beyond more than just a
[12:38] writing tool. But uh let's go back
[12:41] because that is everything you need to
[12:42] know. Oh, and also just on this right
[12:44] hand side here, you can see you've got
[12:46] chat, which are the sort of like
[12:48] different things you've asked the uh the
[12:51] sources over here. And you've got notes.
[12:53] And if you want to create a new note,
[12:54] you can put a little new note in and you
[12:56] can view the PDF and it save it to a
[12:58] note and it will be saved in this little
[13:00] thing here. Lovely jobly. Here we get a
[13:03] summary of that paper. Um, and you can
[13:05] see it's going to generate it down here.
[13:07] it's got 43 citations blah blah blah
[13:09] over or this is just a really great way
[13:12] to sort of like interrogate not just one
[13:14] but a load of PDF documents. All right
[13:17] then. So let's go back to home and uh
[13:20] start from there again. You can see down
[13:23] here now new web document. Yes, we've
[13:25] been through that. There's lots of stuff
[13:26] you can do with web documents. We've got
[13:29] Microsoft Word addins. We've got do
[13:30] Google Docs addin. Let's have a look at
[13:32] the Microsoft Word one because this is
[13:34] sort of like a paper that maybe I would
[13:36] want to write about beards and
[13:38] attractiveness. Um, let me know in the
[13:40] comments. Do you like beards? I don't
[13:41] know. Oh, I screen nearly fell. I think
[13:44] I mean I like beards. I'm growing a
[13:46] beard, but you know, I understand
[13:48] they're like Vegemite or Marmite. You
[13:50] either love it or hate it. Yeah. Anyway,
[13:52] let me know. So here, PayPal, you can
[13:55] see that if you've got a um document or
[13:58] even a blank page, you can do everything
[14:00] in Word that you could do in the web
[14:03] interface. So here we've got language
[14:05] consistency on the edit page. We got
[14:07] rewrite, we got write, site, translate,
[14:09] templates, checks, and PDF. Everything
[14:11] here is really um awesome and exactly
[14:14] like it is in the web interface. So, if
[14:16] you prefer writing in a um document like
[14:19] Word, then you can use the same tools in
[14:22] this editor. Yes, that's what it's
[14:24] called. All right, then. And if you want
[14:25] to add it in, all you have to do is go
[14:27] to add-ins and search for paper pal. And
[14:29] it's as easy as that. There it is. Easy
[14:32] peasy. So, that is everything you need
[14:35] to know about it in um you know, the
[14:37] word or in the different um uh document
[14:41] uh editors that you can use. Um you've
[14:43] also got a Chrome extension. So, um, you
[14:46] can edit latex documents directly in
[14:48] Overleaf if you like Overleaf. I've
[14:50] never really used it, but I know some
[14:53] super nerds love to use it. Um, and
[14:56] yeah, you can use all of the tools that
[14:58] uh, you know, uh, you can use um, in the
[15:02] web document in Latte as well. So, you
[15:04] can get it PayPal for Overleaf. Um, easy
[15:07] peasy. And we won't go through that
[15:08] today because I think that's going to be
[15:10] a separate video. Um, but you can use it
[15:12] in there as well. And then let's just
[15:15] say you've got to a point where you're
[15:16] happy with your draft. Maybe you're not
[15:18] happy, but you're just fed up of looking
[15:20] at it and you're like, you know what? I
[15:22] want to get this out into the world.
[15:24] That's where this next suite of tools
[15:26] will really help you. So, these are the
[15:29] tools down here. We got plagiarism check
[15:31] down here. And you can see I've put a
[15:32] few of them in. And I can open my report
[15:35] to show you what it looks like. And the
[15:37] report you get is really academic. It's
[15:40] really focused. And I love that you get
[15:42] really sort of like targeted advice. So
[15:44] you can upload a load of stuff. Here's
[15:46] another one. Open report. This is my
[15:47] transparent electrode material paper
[15:49] that I was um drafting I think. Um and
[15:52] uh yeah, you get a similar kind of like
[15:54] plagiarism score and plagiarism check.
[15:57] You just need to run this because the um
[15:59] journals are running this anyway. And
[16:01] you can see here that if there are
[16:02] things that are matched on the side
[16:04] here, you get a little sort of
[16:06] understanding of where they are, what
[16:07] they say, and where they have been
[16:09] found. So that's where you can just make
[16:12] sure that you're not submitting
[16:13] something that's going to flag in the
[16:15] plagiarism sense in a journal. So that's
[16:19] good, isn't it? And then we got AI
[16:20] detector. AI detection. You know, this
[16:22] is a cat and mouse game, but trust me,
[16:25] the journals are doing AI detection
[16:28] these days. So we do just need need to
[16:30] make sure that uh we stand up to this
[16:33] one. And I believe it's even sort of
[16:34] like turn it in um sort of uh
[16:37] compatible. I saw that before. Anyway,
[16:40] so you need to make sure that your paper
[16:42] will pass AI detection and you can do
[16:44] that here by um start or typing in your
[16:47] your text or you can upload your
[16:49] document. Um let's go to actually let's
[16:52] go to something like this and let's see
[16:54] if because I I actually just generated
[16:55] this with AI as an example. Let's see
[16:58] what happens. So let's put that in and
[17:00] then check for AI and see what happens.
[17:02] >> 5 hours later.
[17:04] >> Okay, great. This is what it looks like.
[17:06] I was 100% generating this with AI, but
[17:09] you can see it's 71% identified. Text is
[17:12] mostly AI and with some human input.
[17:14] Well, I had no human inputs. That's
[17:15] pretty good, isn't it, for the thing
[17:17] that generated this, which was just chat
[17:19] GPT. Anyway, so you can see this is the
[17:22] sort of breakdown you get. It will
[17:23] highlight where it thinks there's AI
[17:25] writing and it will tell you whether it
[17:26] thinks it's human or AI blend. And then
[17:29] you can just make sure obviously that
[17:30] your stuff doesn't um get flagged for
[17:33] AI. Um, and another thing down here, uh,
[17:36] you can see you've got submission check.
[17:37] So, with submission check, you can
[17:39] upload your manuscript and make sure
[17:41] that you get suggestions ultimately.
[17:43] Let's have a look. Upload your
[17:44] manuscript. Let's do it. Why not? Let's
[17:46] do it for one of my old uh, papers. So,
[17:49] just sort of like running it through
[17:50] this will just help you make sure that
[17:52] you are putting forward the best paper
[17:55] possible if you're looking to get it
[17:56] peer reviewed or even if this is a um,
[18:00] uh, you know, a paper for university for
[18:02] submitting for your degree. It's just
[18:03] going to make sure that you are um doing
[18:06] the best thing possible to uh ensure
[18:09] that it doesn't get like desk rejected
[18:11] or a bad grade. So you can see here this
[18:14] is the thing that it's looking for
[18:15] metadata. It's looking for tables and
[18:17] figures, references, age of reference,
[18:19] uh no citations, all of that stuff and
[18:22] even language and structure and also
[18:24] counting stuff, abstract length,
[18:26] manuscript length, title length, all of
[18:28] that stuff. And it will just make sure
[18:29] that you're in the right zone for all of
[18:32] these things. And this is the sort of
[18:33] output that you can expect to get. So
[18:35] you'll get suggestions, you know,
[18:36] highlighted with a little bit of a
[18:38] comment as well. And also you can add a
[18:41] little bit more to the cost of this by
[18:45] um getting an expert to lick over it for
[18:47] manuscript formatting and journal
[18:49] submission. So you can see in two days
[18:51] you can make sure that you get
[18:52] manuscript formatting. So if time is of
[18:55] the essence and you've got a little bit
[18:57] of grant funding, then you can use these
[18:59] down here. Um, and this is going to take
[19:01] a while. So, uh, yeah, we won't wait for
[19:03] that. But, um, overall, this is a great
[19:06] tool. And human expert services down
[19:09] here, we've seen formatting, thesis
[19:11] editing, and journal article editing.
[19:13] So, uh, you know, you can get a human
[19:15] involved in the loop if you wish. And in
[19:18] terms of plans, like it's a little bit
[19:20] sneaky because I reckon that uh the best
[19:23] way to use this is as a paid sort of
[19:26] like service because then you get
[19:27] unlimited stuff. Um, I've paid for the
[19:30] monthly one right here, but if you want
[19:31] to pay annually, and this is a tool
[19:33] you're going to use regularly, um, you
[19:35] can get it for 11 uh.5,
[19:39] >> [laughter]
[19:39] >> $11.50 a month, and that's build once a
[19:42] year. So, that's not too bad. It's
[19:44] actually on the more affordable side of
[19:46] these sorts of tools, but um, yeah, it
[19:48] can get a little bit expensive if you're
[19:50] only going monthly and you've got a
[19:51] range of other tools that you're paying
[19:53] for as well. But, overall, I think this
[19:55] is monthly on par with a lot of other
[19:57] tools. But if you know you're going to
[19:59] be doing a lot of writing, if you're
[20:00] towards the end of your PhD, towards the
[20:02] end of a project, and you know you're in
[20:04] that writing stage, then you can go for
[20:06] an annual subscription or even quarterly
[20:08] subscription and save yourself some
[20:10] money. So that is PayPal. Let me know in
[20:12] the comments if you actually like it.
[20:15] Um, I really, really like it and I think
[20:17] it is becoming a tool that every
[20:19] academic probably should consider using
[20:21] at some point. All right, then that's
[20:24] that. Let me know in the comments what
[20:26] you think. If you like this video, check
[20:28] out another powerhouse AI tool, which is
[20:30] Syace. I think you'll love it.

**[00:00]** Paper pile has become an awesome academic powerhouse for writing and academia and research and this is how you use it. So when you log in it looks like this. So this is the web interface and also we'll go through the word interface as well. There's an addin which I think you'll love. So this is what it looks like on the web version of PayPal. And down the side here we've got everything we can do. So first of all we got home which really brings us to everything that they offer in a little um bite-sized chunk. So up here you can change grammar, you can rewrite stuff,
**[00:31]** you can write stuff, you can research stuff, and you can check for plagiarism. Yes, all of those things we will absolutely be using as academics. And then down here you've got your documents. And uh that's about it really. And then if you want to go a little bit deeper, there are a few things you can actually do. So you can chat with PDF, you can open a new web document, and down here we've got the different uh paper pal apps, Microsoft Word, Google Docs, Chrome Docs, [laughter] Google Docs, Chrome extension, and also
**[01:01]** if you've got a manuscript, you can check it for plagiarism, you can check it for AI, and you can do a submission check. And even down here, if you want to, you can get humans involved, real humans, to check over your work. And I love the fact that they offer that as a little bit of a sense check and an extra service. You don't have to use it, but it's great that it's there. So, let's have a look at this homepage a little bit closer, shall we? So, here we've got grammar, and it says here, type or paste text to run an uh academic grade language and grammar check. Oh, yes.
**[01:32]** Thank you. And you can also import a document. So, if you've got something that you're writing, let's say something like this. Um, you can just copy and paste it across or you can work with it in the actual document. So, all we have to do is put it in and we get specific grammar checks. And you can see once you've done that, it takes you into their editor. And this is where all the magic really happens because this is the document you're working on. Here are the uh suggestions that it thinks I should make to improve the grammar. And then look over here on this side, we've got
**[02:03]** all of these cheeky little buttons that we can push. Oh, we'll go into those in this video. Do not worry. But this is where it starts if you want. So, facial hair is currently a sexually dimorphic trait. Oh, yes. And anyway, so you can see it recommends we change paper to study. And we can accept all or we can reject all. We can accept that one. Yes, we can accept and we can accept. So, it's a really simple way to get those little changes made that make a huge difference. So, let's go back because then we want to do rewrite. Now, here is the stuff we want to rewrite. We can put
**[02:34]** it in here and we can click go and then it will take us to the same editor and this is what it looks like. So, facial hair is blah blah blah and it says rewrite for clarity. Um, and uh I think that it hasn't really done much I don't think. Let's have a look. Uh, generate. There we are. So, output the paraphrase and this is how we can paraphrase it. Okay, great. This is what it's given us. And then we'll say, yeah, we'll replace that. Why not? Let's go back. So that's rewrite. Then we've got write. So rewriting is really great if you're not quite sure if you're paraphrasing or just copying someone, by the way. Um and
**[03:06]** then we've got right here. So tell us what you want to write. So write a paragraph or draft a literature review. Use the attach file as content and draft a literature review on this topic. So we can add an attachment, which I really like. We can upload a file, but let's just say we want to write a paragraph on YouTube and mental health. Is that how you spell mental? Seems like mental is like anyway, like in the UK, you're like, "Oh, you're
**[03:38]** bloody mental, mate." Anyway, I I think I've spelled it right. Um, and this is what it ends up with. So, here you can see you can type or paste your text to receive language suggestions or here we are. This is what I've asked for. Write a paragraph on YouTube and mental health. And we can insert in. And there we are. YouTube has a complex relationship with mental health. Certainly my mental health, let me tell you that. Um, and then we've got all of this stuff down here. So, you can see it's really easy. Let's go back to home. We've also got research and we've also got plagiarism. Now, I won't go into these in this tab cuz I think it's better in other sort of like places. But
**[04:10]** that is everything you can do from the home tab, which I really, really like. But you'll notice that each time we push this, it takes us into the editor. So here here you can see um we've actually created all of these new different things. So created less than 10 10 seconds ago was this one. And uh this is really where all of the magic for writing happens. So once you're in a little bit of a document here, you can see down the side we've got this tab. And if we expand it, we get edit,
**[04:41]** rewrite, write, research and site, translate. We've also got templates, which I really, really like. And we've got checks and chat with PDF. We've got everything we would want to use if we are working with a um academic document. So, let's go through these. Edit here. It says um these are the sort of things that we can edit and we can accept them. This is kind of like Grammarly. It's kind of like other editing tools, but it's nice that it's a succinct and specifically made for academia. I really like that that's in here. And also,
**[05:12]** we've got consistency as well. So, achieve consistency in writing style. Fix inconsistencies in your draft such as word forms, date formats, all of that sort of stuff. Yes, those are the really annoying things that editors, supervisors, other academics really don't like. They don't like inconsistency and it just gives them a reason to hate your paper. So, if you can fix them with a push of a button, why wouldn't you? Answer me that. All right, then. So, that's the edit um sort of tab. And then we've got rewrite. So,
**[05:42]** we can select any bit here and we can say paraphrase, improve fluency, make academic, simplify, trim, change tone or synonyms. So, let's just sort of like take this last one at the moment and just say improve fluency. And so, the platforms. Yeah. Okay, that's what I want. Generate. And then it will generate a more fluent um section and we can replace that. There we are. Replace. So, it's really easy to make sure that you are representing your work the way you want it to um sort of like be represented. If you're reading through something, you're like, you know what,
**[06:12]** that sentence, you know, maybe it needs to be made a little bit more academic. So, we can highlight it and click generate. And it's as easy then as pushing insert and replace. Replace. There we are. Thank you very much. It's in there. Now, you'll notice when you also hover over things, you'll get this little thing here, PayPal AI. We also can site stuff. You can also add a comment if you're working on this document with other people. We can also do everything you can do in a typical word um what you see is what you get kind of editor um and uh yeah like
**[06:44]** Google Docs for example. So I love the fact that you can do everything in the uh web interface. And so PayPal AI let's click here and you can see you get all pretty much all of these things here but you get it in a nice little drop-down thing here. Um, overall I think this is a really great way to be working with documents on a web interface. I've not seen anything that is as uh indepth and as useful as paper pal right now for the web interface. So let's go back to home
**[07:16]** and let's have a look to see what else we've got. So if you're working on a document, that's what you can do. And if you want to start a new web document, you click here. And isn't that really annoying that you have a blank page and you have to fill it? Well, don't panic. Don't panic, my little cherub. You can actually just create a template here. So, if you're working with um a blank page, let's expand this and let's go to templates. Templates here, you can see we've got outlines, we've got manuscript, section templates, we've got brainstorm, email, email, the journal, everything you would need typically as
**[07:48]** an academic working from scratch. So, let's go to outlines and let's say I'm writing a book chapter. Why not? And then I What is your subject area? um OPV devices and let's just see um describe your topic >> meanwhile. >> So I've said indoor applications of OPV devices and new materials for efficiency and let's just say generate. You can also attach a supporting file if you want it to sort of like copy or emulate a style of a particular journal. Um but here you can see it's created a nice outline for me. So now I don't have to
**[08:19]** worry about structure before writing because it will do it for me. Of course, I can disagree with this structure and say, "No, that isn't the thing I want to be using, but here you can see it is just very, very easy if I'm writing a book chapter in this case to get everything in the order that it thinks makes sense." And and let me tell you this, it is pretty darn good if you ask me, which you are hopefully asking me because you're on this video, in Okay, so now I've got it. All I have to do is go in and expand this stuff and I have a
**[08:49]** perfect structure to start my book chapter or whatever you are writing. You've also got here AI disclosure. You got manuscript section uh template. So here if you've got title, abstract, keywords, plain road, blah blah blah blah blah. Um and you've also got brainstorming. So how can Paper Power help? If you don't really know where to start, this is a really great place. Ask for advice, um improve your process, all of that sort of stuff. You can brainstorm it in here. And we've also got email and email the journal. So emails name blah blah blah describe what
**[09:20]** you should want to convey and it will make it nice and professional and academic just like you've been doing this for years. That's one thing I love about this. It kind of gives you the confidence to start doing things and trying things because ultimately it is just a steep learning curve the old academia isn't it? Anyway, so that's what we've got here. Now these are all of the things you can do back on the homepage. We've been through all of these in the editor and the um web sort of like interface. And down here you can see you've also got chat with PDF. So if you have got a PDF that you want to chat
**[09:52]** with, you can actually do that here. So let's have a look. Get started. Um it's setting some things up for me. Yes, thank you very much. And obviously I'll need to upload a PDF. So I'll put in one of my old documents. Let's see. Outputs. That goes here. Let's go in there. And then I can start chatting with that PDF. So, as it's uploading, we'll just wait.
**[10:23]** Do you like my new t-shirt? I made it. It's a bit bright, isn't it? I do like my bright t-shirts, though. But I sew these myself. So, I see the bright fabric and I'm like, I'm going to make myself a nice little t-shirt. And that's exactly what I did. All right, then. So, questions you can try. What are the main arguments of this study? So this is very much like a uh notebook LM in a little PDF uh input form. So here you can see you've got the different um things. Here you can add more sources as well. So you can upload and drag and drop multiple
**[10:54]** PDFs. But here I can say what are the main arguments in this study and then it will go away interrogate the document and chat with it. So, I love the fact that um you can add loads and loads of sources. And here you can upload to uh I think 150, no 500 pages per PDF. That's pretty good. And 249 uploads remaining for the month. All right, then. That's quite a lot, isn't it? So, overall, this is sort of like a notebook LM, a little kind of like academic one where you can upload your PDF sources, get some um information,
**[11:27]** and interrogate a whole range of sources if you want. And you can see it's nicely referenced. You can hover over, you can see where it's referenced and taken the stuff from. If you click it, it'll actually take you to the bit where it actually said what it said. Um, and then, uh, once the PDF is open, you can actually in fact interact with the PDF. So, if you want to highlight over it like this, you can highlight over it like that. Um, and yeah, select text. Okay. Yeah. And then you can see you've got other stuff. Copy text, copy your citation, summarize, explain, paragraph,
**[11:58]** trim, make academic, all of that sort of stuff. So, you can hover over it like this. Hover. Hover. Hover. You can do this. I believe in you. And then that pops up automatically. And then that's what you can do. All right. Then, easy peasy lemon squeeze. You also get summary and also related papers. So, this is really great if you have a seed paper. This is kind of like their little taste of something like lit maps or research rabbit. You can see related papers and it will upload them in this
**[12:30]** um in this middle bit. And you can see here these are all of the papers that I really should know about. So it's starting to go beyond more than just a writing tool. But uh let's go back because that is everything you need to know. Oh, and also just on this right hand side here, you can see you've got chat, which are the sort of like different things you've asked the uh the sources over here. And you've got notes. And if you want to create a new note, you can put a little new note in and you can view the PDF and it save it to a note and it will be saved in this little
**[13:00]** thing here. Lovely jobly. Here we get a summary of that paper. Um, and you can see it's going to generate it down here. it's got 43 citations blah blah blah over or this is just a really great way to sort of like interrogate not just one but a load of PDF documents. All right then. So let's go back to home and uh start from there again. You can see down here now new web document. Yes, we've been through that. There's lots of stuff you can do with web documents. We've got Microsoft Word addins. We've got do
**[13:30]** Google Docs addin. Let's have a look at the Microsoft Word one because this is sort of like a paper that maybe I would want to write about beards and attractiveness. Um, let me know in the comments. Do you like beards? I don't know. Oh, I screen nearly fell. I think I mean I like beards. I'm growing a beard, but you know, I understand they're like Vegemite or Marmite. You either love it or hate it. Yeah. Anyway, let me know. So here, PayPal, you can see that if you've got a um document or even a blank page, you can do everything in Word that you could do in the web
**[14:03]** interface. So here we've got language consistency on the edit page. We got rewrite, we got write, site, translate, templates, checks, and PDF. Everything here is really um awesome and exactly like it is in the web interface. So, if you prefer writing in a um document like Word, then you can use the same tools in this editor. Yes, that's what it's called. All right, then. And if you want to add it in, all you have to do is go to add-ins and search for paper pal. And it's as easy as that. There it is. Easy peasy. So, that is everything you need
**[14:35]** to know about it in um you know, the word or in the different um uh document uh editors that you can use. Um you've also got a Chrome extension. So, um, you can edit latex documents directly in Overleaf if you like Overleaf. I've never really used it, but I know some super nerds love to use it. Um, and yeah, you can use all of the tools that uh, you know, uh, you can use um, in the web document in Latte as well. So, you can get it PayPal for Overleaf. Um, easy
**[15:07]** peasy. And we won't go through that today because I think that's going to be a separate video. Um, but you can use it in there as well. And then let's just say you've got to a point where you're happy with your draft. Maybe you're not happy, but you're just fed up of looking at it and you're like, you know what? I want to get this out into the world. That's where this next suite of tools will really help you. So, these are the tools down here. We got plagiarism check down here. And you can see I've put a few of them in. And I can open my report to show you what it looks like. And the report you get is really academic. It's
**[15:40]** really focused. And I love that you get really sort of like targeted advice. So you can upload a load of stuff. Here's another one. Open report. This is my transparent electrode material paper that I was um drafting I think. Um and uh yeah, you get a similar kind of like plagiarism score and plagiarism check. You just need to run this because the um journals are running this anyway. And you can see here that if there are things that are matched on the side here, you get a little sort of understanding of where they are, what they say, and where they have been found. So that's where you can just make
**[16:12]** sure that you're not submitting something that's going to flag in the plagiarism sense in a journal. So that's good, isn't it? And then we got AI detector. AI detection. You know, this is a cat and mouse game, but trust me, the journals are doing AI detection these days. So we do just need need to make sure that uh we stand up to this one. And I believe it's even sort of like turn it in um sort of uh compatible. I saw that before. Anyway, so you need to make sure that your paper
**[16:42]** will pass AI detection and you can do that here by um start or typing in your your text or you can upload your document. Um let's go to actually let's go to something like this and let's see if because I I actually just generated this with AI as an example. Let's see what happens. So let's put that in and then check for AI and see what happens. >> 5 hours later. >> Okay, great. This is what it looks like. I was 100% generating this with AI, but you can see it's 71% identified. Text is mostly AI and with some human input.
**[17:14]** Well, I had no human inputs. That's pretty good, isn't it, for the thing that generated this, which was just chat GPT. Anyway, so you can see this is the sort of breakdown you get. It will highlight where it thinks there's AI writing and it will tell you whether it thinks it's human or AI blend. And then you can just make sure obviously that your stuff doesn't um get flagged for AI. Um, and another thing down here, uh, you can see you've got submission check. So, with submission check, you can upload your manuscript and make sure that you get suggestions ultimately. Let's have a look. Upload your
**[17:44]** manuscript. Let's do it. Why not? Let's do it for one of my old uh, papers. So, just sort of like running it through this will just help you make sure that you are putting forward the best paper possible if you're looking to get it peer reviewed or even if this is a um, uh, you know, a paper for university for submitting for your degree. It's just going to make sure that you are um doing the best thing possible to uh ensure that it doesn't get like desk rejected or a bad grade. So you can see here this is the thing that it's looking for
**[18:15]** metadata. It's looking for tables and figures, references, age of reference, uh no citations, all of that stuff and even language and structure and also counting stuff, abstract length, manuscript length, title length, all of that stuff. And it will just make sure that you're in the right zone for all of these things. And this is the sort of output that you can expect to get. So you'll get suggestions, you know, highlighted with a little bit of a comment as well. And also you can add a little bit more to the cost of this by um getting an expert to lick over it for
**[18:47]** manuscript formatting and journal submission. So you can see in two days you can make sure that you get manuscript formatting. So if time is of the essence and you've got a little bit of grant funding, then you can use these down here. Um, and this is going to take a while. So, uh, yeah, we won't wait for that. But, um, overall, this is a great tool. And human expert services down here, we've seen formatting, thesis editing, and journal article editing. So, uh, you know, you can get a human involved in the loop if you wish. And in
