[00:01] All right, on today's show,
[00:02] we're gonna explore some big Facebook
[00:04] updates.
[00:04] Zuckerberg and team have been busy.
[00:07] After most of the year,
[00:08] it seemed like they were mostly focused on
[00:09] the Instagram side.
[00:11] First, a big redesign for Facebook.
[00:13] Some of it feels like it's slowly becoming
[00:15] Instagram.
[00:16] Also a big opportunity for Facebook groups
[00:18] where you can do something that we've
[00:19] never been able to do before,
[00:21] which may be a great asset for some
[00:23] brands and marketers.
[00:24] And of course,
[00:25] some new ways to use AI to make
[00:26] everything easier and faster.
[00:29] My name is Jerry Potter,
[00:30] host of the Social Media Marketing Talk
[00:32] Show,
[00:32] a social media examiner production where
[00:34] we break down all the latest social media
[00:35] news and what it means for marketers like
[00:37] you.
[00:38] All right,
[00:38] let's talk about this Facebook redesign.
[00:40] So they're redesigning the feed, search,
[00:43] creation tools,
[00:44] all these different things.
[00:44] So first of all,
[00:45] Facebook is simplifying its feed and
[00:48] navigation,
[00:49] including full screen content views.
[00:51] If you're scrolling Facebook,
[00:52] if users are scrolling Facebook and they
[00:54] can tap on something,
[00:55] it'll blow up to full screen, basically.
[00:58] Obviously, this looks nicer.
[00:59] They're also moving to grid-based layouts.
[01:01] Sounds very Instagram-like.
[01:03] And the ability to double tap on a
[01:05] photo to give it a like.
[01:07] also something that's been on Instagram
[01:09] for many, many years.
[01:10] So those are the parts that are making
[01:11] it start to feel like, okay,
[01:13] are we just becoming Facebookagram?
[01:15] Is that what we would call it?
[01:17] Another thing,
[01:18] basically a redesigned content creation
[01:20] flow,
[01:20] making it easier to create stories and
[01:22] feed posts with better access to the most
[01:25] popular tools.
[01:26] So rather than having to sift through a
[01:27] whole menu,
[01:28] some of the most popular tools in creating
[01:29] content are tagging people, adding music,
[01:33] audience settings.
[01:34] So now those are going to be more
[01:35] prominent
[01:36] right away.
[01:38] And it looks like just from the
[01:40] screenshots,
[01:40] at least that it's all just going to
[01:42] feel a lot more natural.
[01:43] Like it does on Instagram, Facebook for,
[01:46] for anyone who is trying to make Facebook
[01:48] reels in the early days,
[01:49] like it was hard to even get to
[01:51] the real creation screen in the very
[01:53] beginning, but yeah, everything is, uh,
[01:55] coming around and gonna be a lot more
[01:57] accessible and easy to use now.
[01:59] And then this one is interesting and
[02:00] definitely feels like Instagram.
[02:02] This feels like one of those updates that
[02:04] can't believe they haven't done it before.
[02:06] Search, when you go to search on Facebook,
[02:08] it'll surface more content types,
[02:10] but rather than just having it be a
[02:11] list of text,
[02:13] it will actually show up as an immersive
[02:15] grid layout.
[02:17] So and they're they're testing a full
[02:18] screen viewer as well.
[02:20] So that means when you search for
[02:22] something like the more visual it is,
[02:25] the more likely somebody is to click on
[02:27] it.
[02:27] So something to keep in mind,
[02:29] text posts are probably not going to do
[02:31] as well as in search as they may
[02:33] have at one time.
[02:35] And then Facebook is also enhancing
[02:37] profile features.
[02:38] So this is interesting.
[02:39] The way they describe it,
[02:40] we're enhancing profile features to show
[02:42] shared interests with friends,
[02:44] making it easier to connect based on
[02:47] hobbies or plans.
[02:48] So how do we use this as marketers?
[02:50] Basically,
[02:50] the way that it works is if I
[02:53] went in and I said,
[02:54] I am a Seattle Seahawks fan,
[02:57] I can say that this year because we're
[02:58] doing good.
[02:59] If I say I'm a Seattle Seahawks fan,
[03:00] basically update my profile to say that,
[03:02] it will show me which of my existing
[03:05] friends or my existing network on Facebook
[03:08] also happen to show interest in the
[03:10] Seattle Seahawks or maybe other NFL teams.
[03:12] I don't know.
[03:14] Imagine if I'm a marketer,
[03:16] I'm going to make sure I go in
[03:18] and add all of the things that are
[03:20] related to my business,
[03:22] to my industry as interests,
[03:24] because then it will surface the other
[03:26] people around you that you already know,
[03:29] or at least went to high school with,
[03:31] but they're Facebook friends with you that
[03:33] also have that same interest.
[03:35] That's the idea behind it.
[03:37] This idea of how to use it for
[03:38] marketing that I'm talking about is just
[03:40] hypothetical, but we'll see how it goes.
[03:43] One thing that's not hypothetical,
[03:45] you know,
[03:45] we've been talking a lot about social
[03:46] media marketing world coming up here soon
[03:48] in Anaheim.
[03:49] And you know, one person learns tactics,
[03:51] but a whole team,
[03:52] if you send your whole team to social
[03:53] media marketing world,
[03:54] you're going to be able to create
[03:55] transformation.
[03:57] Like when your team goes,
[03:58] they multiply the results exponentially
[04:00] because if you have more than one person
[04:02] there, you can cover more sessions,
[04:03] share more insights,
[04:05] cross-pollinate the AI and marketing ideas
[04:08] in real time,
[04:10] make more valuable connections that can
[04:11] lead to exciting new opportunities.
[04:13] Plus,
[04:13] your team will have a built-in support
[04:15] plan for implementation because they were
[04:17] all there, right?
[04:18] Stacey Brown,
[04:19] who goes to Social Media Marketing World,
[04:21] said,
[04:21] this conference gave me a new vision for
[04:23] my work and opened my eyes to where
[04:25] I could take my career.
[04:27] And Noah Stanley said, the mindset,
[04:29] openness,
[04:30] and amount of time your experts gave to
[04:32] us was head and shoulders above other
[04:33] conferences.
[04:34] I will bring multiple members of my staff
[04:36] next year.
[04:37] I was just in a group the other
[04:38] day and somebody said, hey,
[04:39] what digital marketing conferences are you
[04:41] going to next year?
[04:42] And I was like, well, I'm biased, but
[04:44] there is nothing better than Social Media
[04:46] Marketing World.
[04:47] Don't learn alone,
[04:48] multiply your team's marketing power by
[04:50] bringing them all to Social Media
[04:52] Marketing World,
[04:54] Go to socialmediamarketing.world right now
[04:57] to learn more or get your tickets.
[04:59] Again, socialmediamarketing.world.
[05:01] You can buy up to ten at a
[05:02] time.
[05:03] Again, go to socialmediamarketing.world.
[05:06] The limit there is ten.
[05:07] All right,
[05:08] something that we've never been able to do
[05:10] on Facebook that might be an opportunity,
[05:13] if you already have this existing asset.
[05:16] So Facebook is now introducing a feature
[05:19] that allows group admins to convert a
[05:21] private group to public.
[05:25] Now you've never been able to do this
[05:26] before.
[05:26] We've always been able to create a
[05:27] Facebook group and then you could make it,
[05:29] if it was public at first,
[05:30] you could make it private,
[05:32] but you never were able to make it
[05:33] public because if people were sharing in
[05:36] what they thought was a private group,
[05:38] and all of a sudden it was made
[05:39] public,
[05:40] Well,
[05:40] that's not really fair to the members of
[05:42] that group.
[05:43] So this new system is going to basically
[05:46] preserve privacy safeguards for existing
[05:48] members.
[05:49] And so if you had a Facebook,
[05:52] I'll tell you how it works in just
[05:53] a second.
[05:53] But if you have a private Facebook group
[05:57] that's maybe really good,
[05:58] has lots of good content in it about
[05:59] your brand or your business,
[06:01] and you're like,
[06:02] I wish I could take it public.
[06:04] Now you can.
[06:05] And the reason you'd wanna do this is
[06:06] because public Facebook group stuff can
[06:08] show up in the feed.
[06:09] You know how we see so much content
[06:11] now from people that are not our friends?
[06:13] Well, same thing,
[06:14] public Facebook group stuff has an
[06:16] opportunity to show up there as well.
[06:18] So the way it works is,
[06:20] When the private group goes public,
[06:22] all past posts and comments only remain
[06:25] visible to admins, moderators,
[06:27] or existing members,
[06:28] and the member list remains visible only
[06:30] to admins and moderators, okay?
[06:33] And so to do this,
[06:34] you would go into the group settings page.
[06:36] When you do it,
[06:37] other admins will get notified, of course,
[06:39] and there's also a three-day review window
[06:41] during which the conversion can be
[06:42] canceled.
[06:43] And then after the conversion,
[06:45] any new posts or comments or reactions
[06:47] will be visible to the public and members
[06:49] are notified of the change as well,
[06:51] including a prompt when they post for the
[06:52] first time in the now public group.
[06:55] So this feels like one of those things
[06:57] that Facebook really thought through.
[07:00] It sounds like if you're not that active
[07:02] in a group and all of a sudden
[07:02] you go back six months from now and
[07:05] you start posting, it'll let you know,
[07:06] hey, this is public now,
[07:08] just keep that in mind.
[07:09] Speaking of privacy in groups,
[07:12] Facebook has now also introduced nicknames
[07:14] for Facebook groups.
[07:15] So a lot of threads,
[07:17] whether it's Reddit or Discord or
[07:19] different places like that,
[07:20] you've always been able to go in and
[07:21] use a username, right?
[07:23] A nickname instead of your actual name.
[07:26] So now Facebook is allowing users to post
[07:28] under custom usernames instead of their
[07:30] real names.
[07:31] Here's the weird thing about this.
[07:34] On one hand,
[07:34] it lets people kind of go in,
[07:36] maybe have something that reflects their
[07:37] personality,
[07:38] but their boss doesn't recognize,
[07:42] for example.
[07:43] Although I guess if your profile picture
[07:44] was still there,
[07:45] that would kind of ruin that illusion.
[07:47] But the whole idea is you can go
[07:48] in and kind of be yourself or have
[07:50] something that maybe reflects your
[07:51] personality or something like that.
[07:52] And you can have a different nickname for
[07:54] every group.
[07:55] Sounds good, right?
[07:57] But you can also change your nickname
[08:00] every two days.
[08:02] So somebody could go into a group,
[08:04] do whatever,
[08:06] change their nickname a couple days later,
[08:08] do some more,
[08:08] change their nickname a couple days later,
[08:10] do some more.
[08:12] I'm trying to think like what a terrible
[08:14] person would do and nothing's coming to
[08:15] mind,
[08:15] but you can obviously imagine the
[08:18] potential downside of this.
[08:20] Now,
[08:21] the feature does exclude access to some
[08:22] tools.
[08:22] So if you're using a nickname,
[08:23] you can't do live streams in the group,
[08:25] you can't content share,
[08:27] you can't private message or anything like
[08:29] that.
[08:30] And by the way,
[08:31] this is not turned on by default.
[08:33] The group admin has to approve and
[08:35] activate this feature.
[08:37] So just so that you know,
[08:39] I didn't see anything about whether it was
[08:41] on by default or not.
[08:43] So maybe worth checking the settings.
[08:46] All right, an update for Facebook Reels.
[08:49] So people are stealing Reels and using
[08:51] copywritten content all the time.
[08:54] Did we say copywritten content or is it
[08:56] copyrighted content?
[08:56] I think it's copyrighted content.
[08:58] Either way.
[08:59] So now they've launched Content
[09:00] Protection.
[09:01] So this is a mobile first tool in
[09:02] the professional dashboard that will
[09:04] automatically protect against Reels posted
[09:07] to Facebook and then flags matches across
[09:09] Facebook and Instagram.
[09:11] So there's something very sophisticated
[09:12] like this on YouTube,
[09:13] and now it's great to see it coming
[09:15] to other platforms.
[09:16] So you can choose if something is flagged
[09:18] and it's your content, you can track it,
[09:21] you can block it,
[09:22] or you can release detected matches and
[09:25] apply attribution to it.
[09:27] if somebody took your content,
[09:28] but it was doing really well and it
[09:29] was promoting your brand, you could say,
[09:31] okay, yeah, cool.
[09:32] You can keep doing that and we're just
[09:34] gonna track it.
[09:35] Or you could add attribution to it and
[09:37] then keep doing it,
[09:38] or you can block it.
[09:40] So there is a,
[09:42] There's a feature built in that's nice for
[09:44] brands that work with more than one
[09:45] account with an allow list,
[09:47] as they're calling it,
[09:48] where you can approve certain accounts to
[09:50] automatically put up the same content.
[09:52] So if you are putting the same content
[09:54] or parts of the same content on more
[09:57] than one account,
[09:58] you add that account to the allow list
[09:59] so it's not constantly getting flagged as
[10:02] you go through all of it, okay?
[10:04] All right,
[10:04] I didn't know this still existed,
[10:06] but if you've been in marketing for a
[10:07] while,
[10:08] you remember when we all had to have
[10:09] this on our company websites,
[10:11] the Facebook like and comment plugins,
[10:14] right?
[10:14] So this was a little thing that you
[10:15] could add to your website and people could
[10:19] click the like button or comment with
[10:21] their Facebook account.
[10:22] They're both being discontinued February
[10:25] tenth, twenty twenty six.
[10:27] So if you have them,
[10:28] you might wanna take them down.
[10:30] The cool thing is Meta has been smart
[10:32] about this.
[10:33] Basically,
[10:33] if it's still there after February,
[10:35] it's just going to be a zero by
[10:38] zero pixel sized element.
[10:41] And so it shouldn't show up at all.
[10:44] So it shouldn't break your site basically.
[10:46] Anyone who has worked in web design or
[10:48] web management has absolutely had a plugin
[10:51] go bad and broke the entire homepage.
[10:53] That's not gonna happen here.
[10:55] If you know you have one of those
[10:56] old like button or commenting tools on
[10:58] there,
[10:59] you might wanna go ahead and take that
[11:01] off sometime before February.
[11:03] All right, some incredible ads updates.
[11:05] So they've added a lot of AI tools
[11:09] with ads.
[11:09] And first up,
[11:10] this is for creator brand ad campaigns.
[11:13] One of the big breakthroughs that we've
[11:15] had the last few years
[11:16] in social media is closing the gap between
[11:20] using a creator or an influencer for your
[11:23] for your brand and the company itself
[11:25] there's more transparency there's more
[11:27] ways to find each other uh you know
[11:29] a lot of it several years ago was
[11:31] just kind of done on trust like i
[11:32] i guess this account looks good they've
[11:34] got followers and they're getting comments
[11:36] and uh hopefully this campaign will work
[11:39] So inside the partnership ads hub,
[11:41] there's a new AI powered tool that will
[11:45] essentially help you view performance
[11:47] insights like how many likes,
[11:48] comments and shares organic creator
[11:50] content is already getting.
[11:52] And then you can look at that and
[11:54] decide which ones you want to go ahead
[11:56] and boost.
[11:57] Then creator eligibility has been expanded
[11:59] to include Facebook profiles that are
[12:00] using professional mode,
[12:01] so not just business pages.
[12:03] So there's more creators available now for
[12:05] partnership ads.
[12:07] And they've also created new ad code
[12:09] sharing capabilities that let creators
[12:11] proactively give advertisers permission to
[12:13] use their content in partnership ads.
[12:16] So it can happen later on.
[12:17] So I did a deal with a brand
[12:18] actually last week and went through this
[12:20] for the first time.
[12:21] And they just said, once it's up,
[12:23] this was on Instagram actually,
[12:24] but once it's up,
[12:25] just give us your ad code and then
[12:29] we'll take care of the rest.
[12:30] So nice to see those things happening.
[12:33] All right.
[12:34] Over in Europe,
[12:36] Meta has agreed to give EU users a
[12:39] choice regarding personalized advertising
[12:41] on Facebook and Instagram starting January
[12:43] twenty twenty six.
[12:44] So Europe has much stricter privacy laws
[12:47] than a lot of the world.
[12:48] And originally,
[12:49] you may remember we reported on the show
[12:51] about how Facebook was like,
[12:53] you can pay to use Facebook or get
[12:55] it for free and we're going to use
[12:56] your data like that's going to be our
[12:57] agreement.
[12:58] So starting in January,
[13:00] users will be able to choose between full
[13:02] data sharing to get personalized ads,
[13:05] right, the way they sell it to us,
[13:06] or limited data sharing for less
[13:08] personalized experiences.
[13:10] So that's the latest agreement on that.
[13:12] We'll see how that shakes out in Q
[13:14] one of twenty twenty six.
[13:16] Personally, as a marketer,
[13:18] I want to know when I'm being retargeted.
[13:19] I want to see what people are doing.
[13:20] So whenever that prompt pops up on my
[13:23] phone, ask app not to track, I'm like,
[13:25] no, it's OK.
[13:26] You can track.
[13:27] I want to see what everybody's doing.
[13:29] All right.
[13:30] Meta has added some new tools to its
[13:32] lead generation suite.
[13:33] So if you use Facebook ads for lead
[13:36] gen, there are some great updates here.
[13:38] First of all,
[13:39] Advantage Plus leads campaigns are now
[13:40] globally available.
[13:42] So this is where you get to use
[13:43] Meta's AI to automate and optimize lead
[13:45] generation for really cost effective,
[13:48] high quality results.
[13:49] You know, it's a mixed bag,
[13:50] but I would say more
[13:52] of the people I talk to say this
[13:53] works wonderfully than people that have
[13:55] had issues with it.
[13:56] But now that's globally available.
[13:57] So if you're one of the regions,
[13:59] you didn't have it before, now you do.
[14:01] Also CRM integrations are increasing and
[14:05] can be done really easy via Zapier and
[14:08] Salesforce Sales Cloud.
[14:10] So now you can have less setup time
[14:14] and technical barriers for basically
[14:15] tracking and getting everything where it
[14:17] needs to go.
[14:18] Also new lead verification tools.
[14:20] I love this because you know,
[14:21] if you've ever run Facebook ads,
[14:24] you're kind of going, okay, well,
[14:24] how many of these are gonna be spam?
[14:26] And how many of these are, you know,
[14:27] how many leads are we paying for that
[14:28] are not good leads?
[14:30] So now verification tools include SMS
[14:32] phone number.
[14:33] You can require a work email or address
[14:36] verification to improve lead quality and
[14:38] then reduce spam.
[14:40] And then Meta is also testing automated
[14:41] messenger agents and integrating third
[14:43] party lead nurturing tools like ManyChat
[14:45] and Botcake so that you can do twenty
[14:47] four seven follow ups.
[14:49] So really putting the technology to use.
[14:52] You know, I opened the show today saying,
[14:54] yeah,
[14:54] we've got a lot of updates from Meta,
[14:55] you know,
[14:57] and this year it seems like they focus
[14:58] more on Instagram stuff than Facebook.
[15:00] But I will say they certainly continue to
[15:02] invest in the paid ad side.
[15:04] Obviously,
[15:04] that's where they make a lot of a
[15:06] lot of their money.
[15:07] So
[15:07] All right, a couple of API updates.
[15:09] If you use third party tools,
[15:11] Meta has introduced in the enhanced
[15:13] opportunity score feature in its marketing
[15:15] API.
[15:16] So now that if that connects to whatever
[15:17] third party tool you use,
[15:19] you will have access to the opportunity
[15:22] score features, which is nice.
[15:24] And then also Meta introduced a new
[15:26] feature in the marketing API that allows
[15:27] advertisers to allocate up to five percent
[15:30] of ad spend to placements they've marked
[15:32] as excluded when the system identifies
[15:34] potential performance benefit.
[15:36] So if you go in and you say,
[15:37] yes, I want to be in the feed,
[15:39] I want to be in reels,
[15:40] I do not want to be in the
[15:41] sidebar, for example,
[15:43] then this is an opportunity for if the
[15:46] AI thinks, yeah,
[15:47] you could probably be OK in the sidebar
[15:49] because we're seeing similar campaigns
[15:51] work well.
[15:52] You can basically say, OK, yes,
[15:53] you can use up to five percent of
[15:55] my ad spend on that or three percent
[15:58] or one percent,
[15:58] whatever you decide that you want it to
[16:00] be.
[16:00] So that's coming to third party tools that
[16:02] connect through the marketing API as well.
[16:06] All right, are you using MetaVerified?
[16:10] They have added something pretty
[16:13] potentially cool to their highest tier.
[16:16] So a lot of people run MetaVerified and
[16:18] I'm trying to remember what it starts with
[16:20] at now, you know, twelve bucks,
[16:21] twenty bucks,
[16:21] depending on where you sign up a month.
[16:23] But Meta has this Meta verified max plan
[16:27] that is three forty nine a month or
[16:29] four ninety nine a month if you want
[16:30] both Facebook and Instagram.
[16:33] And they've added personalized content
[16:35] strategy advice to that tier.
[16:38] So if you're in that tier,
[16:39] you can now book a strategy call with
[16:40] Meta's content team every six months per
[16:43] verified profile.
[16:45] Now,
[16:46] I certainly wouldn't necessarily say
[16:47] that's affordable.
[16:48] I think anyone who's been in marketing has
[16:49] gotten at one point maybe got on one
[16:51] of those free calls with a Facebook
[16:53] expert.
[16:53] And as a marketer,
[16:55] you might have even felt like you knew
[16:56] more than they did.
[16:58] Hopefully this is really good strategy,
[17:00] but you'd have to find other benefits.
[17:02] I think if you're paying five hundred
[17:03] dollars a month,
[17:04] six months to get a single call,
[17:07] you're talking three grand there.
[17:08] So hopefully it's a valuable call.
[17:11] According to Meta,
[17:12] the session offers tailored feedback to
[17:13] help optimize content strategies based in
[17:16] Meta platform priorities.
[17:18] So there you have it.
[17:19] If you're already on that plan, though,
[17:20] great new benefit.
[17:21] Or maybe if you're at the one right
[17:22] below that,
[17:23] it might be worth upgrading and seeing
[17:25] what it's all about.
[17:26] And then also for account security,
[17:28] this is so important for us as marketers
[17:30] and brands.
[17:31] Meta has launched a centralized support
[17:33] hub on Facebook and Instagram,
[17:35] making it easier to report issues,
[17:37] get AI assisted answers and access account
[17:39] support tools in one place.
[17:41] So it's an AI support assistant that's
[17:44] being tested globally on Facebook to
[17:45] provide instant personalized help for
[17:47] tasks like account recovery or profile
[17:50] management.
[17:51] If you remember how hard it used to
[17:52] be to get an account back,
[17:54] this is hopefully good news.
[17:56] Apparently,
[17:56] account hacks have dropped by over thirty
[17:58] percent globally in the last year,
[18:00] and AI driven improvements have increased
[18:02] hacked account recovery success rates by
[18:04] more than thirty percent in the US and
[18:06] Canada.
[18:08] should only be a good thing, right?
[18:10] All right, quick reminder, bring yourself,
[18:12] and if you want, bring your whole team.
[18:13] Learn about an all-access
