## ๐ Summary
- The Blessed Hope discusses allegations of clergy sexual abuse at Bethel Church involving senior leadership member Ben Armstrong
- Criticizes institutional response that allegedly framed abuse as consensual affair rather than criminal behavior
- Highlights broader pattern of protective church culture that prioritizes leaders over victims
- References Mike Winger's statement questioning Bethel's awareness of grooming allegations
- Calls for transparency, accountability, and victim-centered justice over institutional protection
## ๐ Main Content
The video examines serious allegations against Bethel Church leadership, specifically regarding Ben Armstrong and the institutional response. The speaker contrasts proper accountability procedures with what allegedly occurred at Bethel, where criminal behavior may have been reframed as consensual misconduct.
Key issues include the "culture of honor" theology that reportedly protects leaders from accountability, the "touch not the Lord's anointed" doctrine used to shield leadership, and systemic patterns that prioritize institutional reputation over victim welfare.
The analysis draws on statements from Mike Winger and other Christian commentators who suggest Bethel leadership was aware of grooming allegations but failed to respond appropriately. The speaker emphasizes that justice matters because victims matter, while acknowledging the human cost for all involved.

**Church Accountability Crisis Highlights Need for Victim-Centered Policies**
Recent developments at Bethel Church underscore critical challenges facing religious institutions when addressing leadership misconduct. The case demonstrates how theological frameworks can either support or undermine proper accountability processes.
Key takeaways for church leaders:
- Establish clear reporting procedures that prioritize legal compliance over reputation management
- Review policies to ensure victim welfare takes precedence over institutional protection
- Examine whether theological frameworks inadvertently create accountability blind spots
This situation serves as a crucial learning opportunity for developing more transparent, just, and healing-centered approaches to pastoral misconduct.

## ๐ฏ Conclusion
This analysis reveals critical weaknesses in religious institutional accountability that prioritize organizational reputation over victim welfare and legal compliance. The case demonstrates how theological frameworks can be misused to shield leaders from appropriate consequences.
Practical next steps include developing independent oversight mechanisms, implementing victim-centered policies, and examining how theological frameworks either support or undermine justice. The broader implications point toward necessary reforms in religious institutional governance and seminary leadership training.
The ultimate goal is creating church cultures that embody both justice and redemption while prioritizing the protection of vulnerable community members over institutional preservation.

[00:00] Now again to juxtapose this when these<br>[00:02] situations happen and they do happen<br>[00:04] that's the tragic part is like people<br>[00:06] are going to be evil and sinful that<br>[00:08] that's the reality of the situation but<br>[00:10] when these situations happen at other<br>[00:12] churches typically what happens and<br>[00:14] should happen is you immediately go<br>[00:17] through the proper channels and if<br>[00:18] there's a crime that's been committed<br>[00:19] you go to the authorities if there<br>[00:20] hasn't been a crime committed but it's<br>[00:21] consensual you you go and by the way<br>[00:23] clare GSA is a crime in a good amount of<br>[00:26] states now that's a relatively recent<br>[00:28] thing you go and deal with it, right?<br>[00:30] Like you deal with it and you make sure<br>[00:33] that people are held accountable. Um, so<br>[00:37] all of this is so so grieving um and<br>[00:39] even hard to to talk about it because<br>[00:41] these are real people's lives being<br>[00:43] impacted. And if Ben Armstrong actually<br>[00:47] uh kind of told himself this tale that<br>[00:50] this was really an affair and hasn't,<br>[00:53] you know, sinned in this way since then<br>[00:55] and now this is all being dug up and now<br>[00:57] this is going this is going to bring<br>[00:58] harm to his wife who he probably you<br>[01:01] know also gas lit in this situation. His<br>[01:04] kids. This is this is this is a massive<br>[01:07] mess that is being made because the<br>[01:09] foundations were in property land<br>[01:11] because folks were chasing prophetic<br>[01:14] culture instead of God's truth in terms<br>[01:16] of how do you deal with an elder who<br>[01:18] falls in this way. Right. Uh Mike Winger<br>[01:20] put out this statement which I thought<br>[01:21] was good. Bethl announcement about one<br>[01:24] of their senior leadership team. He<br>[01:25] says, "I do not think they were unaware<br>[01:28] of allegations of grooming and what uh<br>[01:30] looks like SA or clergy SA previously<br>[01:33] called an affair. At least I don't think<br>[01:35] the whole leadership team was unaware.<br>[01:38] Perhaps some of them. Jesse Westwood,<br>[01:40] who I just reigned from Faith Reframed,<br>[01:42] and Blae uh from Wake Up and Win have<br>[01:44] both done videos on this recently. Uh<br>[01:46] there's definitely more to this story<br>[01:48] than the letter implies."<br>[01:50] And this is uh the one that they read<br>[01:53] from uh from the pull pit. I thought uh<br>[01:56] this meme wonderfully<br>[01:59] summarizes why we're doing this. Spencer<br>[02:01] Dalton writes podcasters forcing Bethl<br>[02:05] to look at their coverup culture. And<br>[02:07] it's this meme where you he's forcing<br>[02:11] this lady to see this. And yeah, I think<br>[02:15] uh I think in light of all this stuff,<br>[02:16] there seems to have been a pattern. And<br>[02:18] that pattern is now being exposed. And<br>[02:22] I'm not saying that in a derogatory<br>[02:23] sense. I mean like what was beneath the<br>[02:25] surface<br>[02:27] has been brought to the surface and<br>[02:29] people are finally starting to see it<br>[02:31] for what it is. And that doesn't take<br>[02:32] away from any of the good things that<br>[02:34] people have experienced at Bethl. But<br>[02:36] it's a deeper question on the idea, can<br>[02:38] systems like this survive exposure like<br>[02:41] this, right? Because at the end of the<br>[02:43] day, justice matters because victims<br>[02:46] matter. because the Sarah matter and the<br>[02:49] Jubilees matter and their experience<br>[02:51] matters and I'm watching I mean so many<br>[02:53] more folks are finally coming out and<br>[02:54] saying hey I got this word and it<br>[02:57] derailed the trajectory of my life and I<br>[03:00] wish somebody would have told me right<br>[03:02] ultimately when these sit situations<br>[03:04] happen<br>[03:06] matters because leaders are still image<br>[03:09] bearsers and they are capable of<br>[03:11] repentance that's that's outside of the<br>[03:13] allegations the institutional processes<br>[03:16] but there's a human dignity<br>[03:17] here that um we don't we don't want to<br>[03:21] diminish that Bethl can repent in this<br>[03:23] and and seemingly has gone in the right<br>[03:25] direction. We don't want to diminish the<br>[03:27] fact that um there probably will need to<br>[03:30] be restitution in some of this. Um and<br>[03:33] and none of this is to say that I'm<br>[03:35] anti-holy spirit or I'm anti- the gifts<br>[03:38] of the spirit. Um but I am pro- light.<br>[03:43] Step in the light. I am protruuth.<br>[03:46] show the truth when these things get<br>[03:49] mitigated and and and and brushed under<br>[03:51] the rug. Um it just will make things<br>[03:53] worse. And so like a part of me, and you<br>[03:55] guys might think this is crazy, but a<br>[03:57] part of me feels for Ben Armstrong's<br>[04:00] family and and potentially where he's<br>[04:02] at. He might be in a great place today,<br>[04:04] but because this stuff was swept under<br>[04:06] the rug for a decade plus and framed as<br>[04:09] this consensual affair when really there<br>[04:12] was a pattern of Clare GSA, now his<br>[04:15] entire life is being uprooted. Now he's<br>[04:17] on under administrative leave. Now<br>[04:19] there's this investigation that's going<br>[04:21] to happen with the third party and these<br>[04:23] these victims are going to get revisited<br>[04:25] and there's going to be more calls with<br>[04:26] the senior leadership team. and and and<br>[04:28] I think there's probably awesome people<br>[04:30] that are on the senior leadership team,<br>[04:31] especially the younger folks. I've had a<br>[04:34] a bit of an interaction with with some<br>[04:36] of them um or or one of them, and I<br>[04:38] don't want to get into too many details,<br>[04:39] but there seems like there's some<br>[04:40] awesome people here, right? But the<br>[04:42] bigger question in all this is is a<br>[04:45] question about culture, a question about<br>[04:47] the customs, the norms of a specific<br>[04:51] community. And um I'm I'm glad that this<br>[04:55] sort of stuff is happening. I don't<br>[04:56] think it's just exclusive to<br>[04:57] charismatics. I think this stuff<br>[04:58] probably happens in all sorts of<br>[05:00] churches. Um, but there does seem to be<br>[05:02] a pattern that's connected to theology<br>[05:05] and an ideology around the stuff that<br>[05:08] Daniel Silk has put out like culture of<br>[05:10] honor, like unpunishable that has ripple<br>[05:14] effects on people's lives because it<br>[05:15] seems to prioritize leaders and people<br>[05:18] who are gifted over folks who are just<br>[05:22] everyday normal folks, right? uh interns<br>[05:25] and students and the the not elite, the<br>[05:28] not special people, right? And so it<br>[05:30] seems like some of these blind spots are<br>[05:32] being revealed to Bethl. Um my question<br>[05:34] is, are they how are they going to get<br>[05:36] through this, right? How are they going<br>[05:37] to maneuver through this? Because, you<br>[05:39] know, I think they have a massive<br>[05:41] building project that they're working on<br>[05:42] that's like a $60 million build building<br>[05:44] project like this that that's a probably<br>[05:46] a heavy lift for them financially. And<br>[05:48] so I'm curious like where is this going<br>[05:50] to go? But but what I what I am sure of,<br>[05:52] it definitely seems like the touch not<br>[05:55] the Lord's anointed and paralleling<br>[05:57] David and Saul and Saul not being killed<br>[06:00] by David even when he could be and how<br>[06:02] we're not to touch the Lord's anointed.<br>[06:04] Um that that that that's fading in<br>[06:07] church culture in general and<br>[06:09] specifically in charismatic culture. And<br>[06:10] I think that's good, right? because I<br>[06:12] think we need to have more loyalty to<br>[06:15] the the victims or the potential victims<br>[06:17] uh than loyalty to a platform or a brand<br>[06:20] or a name. Guys, the second annual Bless<br>[06:23] God Summit is happening March 5th, 6th,<br>[06:25] and 7th here in beautiful Oceanside,<br>[06:28] California, right here on the beach. We got to see a ton of<br>[07:34] people who are special in we'll call it<br>[07:36] in the industry.<br>[07:37] >> One of our major takeaways has just been<br>[07:40] how God blesses in you being faithful. A<br>[07:44] lot of Christians just want to chase<br>[07:46] after success instead of chasing<br>[07:48] faithfulness.<br>[07:49] >> I think it's just been really effective<br>[07:50] how like everybody has been teaching you<br>[07:54] how they've been able to like follow<br>[07:56] Jesus and make disciples as they're<br>[07:58] going.<br>[07:58] >> It's a really classy summit.

**[00:00]** Now, again, to juxtapose this, when these situations happen, they do happen. That's the tragic part. It's like people are going to be evil and sinful. That That's the reality of the situation. But, when these situations happen at other churches, typically what happens and should happen is you immediately go through the proper channels. And if there's a crime that's been committed, you go to the authorities. If there hasn't been a crime committed, but it's consensual, you you go And by the way, clergy essay is a crime in a good amount of states now. That's a relatively recent thing. You go and deal with it,
**[00:30]** right? Like you deal with it and you make sure that people are held accountable. Um So, all of this is so is so grieving and even hard to to to talk about it because these are real people's lives being impacted. And if Ben Armstrong actually uh kind of told himself this tale that this was really an affair and hasn't you know, sinned in this way since then, and now this all being dug up and now this is going to this is going to bring harm to his wife, who
**[01:00]** he probably, you know, also gaslit in this situation, his kids. This is This is This is a massive mess that is being made because the foundations weren't properly lined, because folks were chasing prophetic culture instead of God's truth in terms of how do you deal with an elder who falls in this way, right? Mike Winger put out this statement, which I thought was good. Beto announcement about one of their senior leadership team. He says, I do not think they were unaware of allegations of grooming and what uh looks like essay or clergy essay,
**[01:33]** previously called an affair. At least I don't think the whole leadership team was unaware. Perhaps some of them. Jesse Westwood, who I just rained from Faith Reframed, and Blaze uh from Wake Up and Win, have both done videos on this recently. Uh there's definitely more to this story than the letter implies. And this is uh the one that they read from uh from the pulpit. I thought uh this meme wonderfully summarizes why we're doing this. Spencer Dalton writes,
**[02:03]** "Podcasters forcing Bethel to look at their cover-up culture." And it's this meme where you he's forcing this lady to see this. And yeah, I think uh I think in light of all this stuff, there seems to have been a pattern, and that pattern is now being exposed. And I'm not saying that in a derogatory sense. I mean, like what was beneath the surface has been brought to the surface, and people are finally starting to see it for what it is. And that doesn't take away from any of the good things that
**[02:33]** people have experienced at Bethel, but it's a deeper question on the idea, can systems like this survive exposure like this? Right? Because at the end of the day, justice matters because victims matter. Because the Sarahs matter, and the Jubilees matter, and their experience matters. And I'm watch I mean, so many more folks are finally coming out and saying, "Hey, I got this word, and it derailed the trajectory of my life, and I wish somebody would have told me." Right? Ultimately, when these situations
**[03:04]** happen, accountability matters because leaders are still image bearers, and they are capable of repentance. That's that's outside of the allegations, the institutional processes, but there's a human dignity here that um we don't we don't want to diminish that Bethel can repent in this, and and seemingly has gone in the right direction. We don't want to diminish the fact that um there probably will need to be restitution in some of this. Um and and none of this is to say that I'm anti-Holy Spirit, or I'm
**[03:37]** anti-the gifts of the spirit, um but I am pro-light. Step in the light. I am pro-truth. Show the truth. When these things get mitigated in in in in brushed under the rug, um it just will make things worse. And so like a part of me, and you guys might think this is crazy, but a part of me feels for Ben Armstrong's family and and potentially where he's at. He might be in a great place today. But because this stuff was swept under the rug for a decade plus and framed as
**[04:09]** this consensual affair when really there was a pattern of clear GSA, now his entire life is being uprooted. Now he's on under administrative leave. Now there's this investigation that's going to happen with a third party and these these victims are going to get revisited and there's going to be more calls with the senior leadership team. And and and I think there's probably awesome people that are on the senior leadership team, especially the younger folks. I've had a a bit of an interaction with with some of them or or one of them and I don't want to get into too many details, but there
**[04:39]** seems like there's some awesome people here, right? But the bigger question in all this is is a question about culture, a question about the customs, the norms of a specific community. And, um, I'm I'm glad that this sort of stuff is happening. I don't think it's just exclusive to charismatics. I think this stuff probably happens in all sorts of churches, um, but there does seem to be a pattern that's connected to theology and an ideology around the stuff that Daniel Silk has put out, like Culture of
**[05:10]** Honor, like Unpunishable, that has ripple effects on people's lives cuz it probably seems to prioritize leaders and people who are gifted over folks who are just everyday normal folks, right? Uh, interns and students and the the not elite, the not special people, right? And so it seems like some of these blind spots are being revealed to Bethel. Um, my question is, are they how are they going to get through this, right? How are they going to maneuver through this because, you know, I think they have a
**[05:40]** massive building project that they're working on. It's like a $60 million building project like this that that's a probably a heavy lift for them financially. And so I'm curious like where is this going to go? But what what I what I am sure of it definitely seems like the touch not the Lord's anointed and paralleling David and Saul and Saul not being killed by David even when he could be and how we're not such the Lord's anointed um that that that's fading in church culture in general and specifically in charismatic culture. And I think that's good, right? Because I
**[06:11]** think we need to have more loyalty to the the victims or the potential victims uh than loyalty to a platform or a brand or name.
