## ๐ Summary
- Bible scholar Mike Winger exposes serious problems with the "Passion Translation" by Brian Simmons, which claims to be a legitimate Bible translation but appears to inject theological bias.
- Simmons made demonstrably false prophecies about 2020 being a "year of glory" and predicting millions of California conversions.
- The translation inserts phrases like "mountains of influence" that don't exist in original texts, supporting prosperity theology.
- The broader issue is the temptation to elevate personal authority above Scripture, affecting not just cult leaders but everyday believers.
- The video calls for submitting preferences to Scripture rather than bending Scripture to personal views.
## ๐ Main Content
Mike Winger's critique centers on Brian Simmons, who created the "Passion Translation" with endorsements from Bethel Church and other charismatic leaders. This translation is distributed on the popular YouVersion Bible app, reaching millions of users.
### False Prophecies
Simmons made specific, time-bound predictions that failed:
- **2020 Prophecy**: Claimed 2020 would be a "year of glory" with minimal "shakings" in January, made shortly before COVID-19 and other major disruptions
- **California Revival**: In 2015, predicted 20% of Southern California (approximately 5 million people) would convert to Christianity
### Translation Problems
The video demonstrates how the Passion Translation injects theological concepts not present in original texts. For example, Psalm 72:3 becomes "mountains of influence will be fruitful" in the Passion Translation, while standard translations like ESV read "Let the mountains bear prosperity for the people" - referring to literal agricultural prosperity, not spiritual authority structures.
### The Deeper Issue
The presenter argues this represents a universal temptation dating back to Genesis 3: elevating human authority above divine revelation. This pattern appears across theological spectrums - prosperity preachers, progressive Christianity, hyper-charismatics, and deconstructionists all risk reading their predetermined conclusions into Scripture.
### Authority Questions
The fundamental issue is whether believers submit their preferences to Scripture or bend Scripture around their feelings. The video emphasizes that faithful stewardship requires recognizing God's word as the authority rather than treating it as raw material for personal agendas.

## ๐ฃ๏ธ Paraphrase
A Christian apologist exposes problems with a popular Bible translation that appears to inject theological bias rather than accurately translating ancient texts. The translator made false prophecies about 2020 and California revivals, undermining his credibility as someone receiving divine revelation. The translation inserts concepts like "mountains of influence" that support prosperity theology but aren't present in original Hebrew or Greek texts. This represents a broader temptation affecting all believers: the desire to make Scripture conform to personal preferences rather than submitting to its authority. The solution requires approaching God's word on its own terms rather than as raw material for predetermined agendas.
## ๐ฐ Newsletter
๐จ **Translation Trouble**: A popular Bible version reaching millions through the YouVersion app is under fire for inserting theological concepts that aren't in the original texts. The "Passion Translation" appears to support prosperity theology by adding phrases like "mountains of influence" where ancient texts simply mention agricultural prosperity. The translator's failed prophecies about 2020 being a "year of glory" raise additional credibility questions. This highlights a crucial issue for all believers: are we approaching Scripture to learn what it actually says, or to confirm what we already want to believe? Whether you're a WordPress developer debugging code or a church leader interpreting texts, the principle remains the same - let the source material speak for itself rather than imposing your assumptions. Check out solid translation resources and always compare multiple versions when studying important passages.

- **Hasty generalization** (08:45): Extends critique of one translator to broader implications about "the temptation that exists in every single one of us" without sufficient evidence
- **Ad hominem** (06:15): "BS Version" joke, while humorous, shifts focus from content critique to personal mockery
#### Tone of voice
Professional but passionate, with moments of righteous indignation. Uses humor strategically ("I can't believe I've never done that before") but maintains respect for audience intelligence. Balances critique with constructive application.
### ๐ก๏ธ DARVO Analysis
#### Deny
- No significant denial patterns detected in this content
- Presenter acknowledges complexity and universal nature of the underlying temptation
#### Attack
- Minimal attacking; focuses primarily on documented false prophecies and textual evidence
- Some rhetorical questions about credibility ("how many fake prophecies does one have to make") that could be interpreted as attacking character rather than claims
#### Reverse victim/offender
- No attempts to position criticized parties as victims
- Maintains focus on protecting potential victims of false teaching rather than defending those making false claims
#### Analysis
The content demonstrates responsible critique methodology, focusing on verifiable claims and documented evidence rather than employing DARVO tactics. The presenter explicitly redirects from making individuals "the villain" to examining systemic issues affecting all believers.
## ๐ฏ Conclusion
Mike Winger's critique of the Passion Translation reveals a fundamental tension in religious interpretation: the conflict between submitting to textual authority versus imposing personal theological frameworks. While the specific case involves demonstrable translation errors and failed prophecies, the deeper issue affects all believers regardless of denomination. The solution requires developing robust biblical literacy, establishing accountability systems for religious leaders, and maintaining humility before Scripture's authority. For the broader WordPress and tech community, this highlights the importance of accurate content curation and the responsibility platforms bear when amplifying religious content to millions of users.
The practical next steps involve better education about translation principles, clearer labeling systems for religious texts, and continued development of tools that help users access original language resources and multiple translation perspectives.

[00:00] Mike Winger exposes this Bible
[00:01] translation that's deceiving millions.
[00:04] If you guys haven't been keeping up,
[00:05] there is a very popular Bible
[00:07] translation called the Passion
[00:08] Translation. And Mike Winger has done a
[00:11] good amount of digging on this
[00:12] particular translation. Some of us use
[00:14] the Uver app. It's on there. And not
[00:16] only is it on there, but it's connected
[00:18] to much of the coverup culture that he's
[00:20] been talking about with regards to the
[00:21] Bethl and the hyperarismatic types. So,
[00:23] he put this video out a couple weeks
[00:25] ago. Um, I've been sitting on this for
[00:27] years, and this is particularly about
[00:28] Brian Simmons. Now, there's a funny
[00:30] compromise he's willing to make that
[00:31] we'll look at a little bit later in this
[00:32] video and then a deeper kind of
[00:34] undergirling of all of this that I think
[00:36] applies to more of us than we'd like to
[00:37] acknowledge. So, this is his video from
[00:39] several weeks ago kind of highlighting
[00:41] some of the utter insanity from Brian
[00:42] Simmons. So, let's take a look at this
[00:44] and then kind of an update on this. This
[00:46] is Brian Simmons. He is the quoteunquote
[00:48] translator of the Passion Translation
[00:50] >> with his 33 second wrong prophecy. One
[00:53] of the best things that happened in
[00:54] Bible translation in my lifetime
[00:55] according to Brian Simmons friend Bill
[00:57] Johnson of Bethl. Here's the wrong
[00:59] prophecy.
[01:00] >> Prince of heaven is coming in such power
[01:03] to our gatherings that uh it's going to
[01:06] it's going to be really good. It's going
[01:08] to be really good. 2020 is just going to
[01:09] really really be good. January is going
[01:11] to bring some shakings here and there,
[01:13] but I'm telling you 2020 mark it down.
[01:15] It's going to be a year of glory. God is
[01:17] going Jeez, man. Oh, man. Again, how
[01:21] many fake prophecies does one have to
[01:23] make before they're acknowledged as
[01:25] someone that's not a prophet? 2020
[01:27] January, the only shaking that came was
[01:29] the tragic death of Kobe Bryant and his
[01:31] poor daughter. And then in March, you
[01:33] had the COVID debacle. Um, man, this is
[01:36] really bad.
[01:37] >> Going to pour out his spirit upon you
[01:39] and your family. You're going to be the
[01:40] healer that you're praying for your
[01:42] family. You're going to be the one that
[01:44] brings it.
[01:46] >> Family,
[01:48] you're gonna be the one that brings it.
[01:51] >> I can't believe I've never done that
[01:53] before. Oh man. Oh gosh. But that's not
[01:56] the only wrong prophecy. Here's another
[01:57] one where Brian Simmons in 2015 talks
[02:00] about how a bunch of people are about to
[02:03] get saved in California. Millions and
[02:05] millions of them. And I think this
[02:07] coming awakening, we're going to have to
[02:08] learn different disciplehip methods.
[02:10] First of all, there's going to be too
[02:11] many people.
[02:12] >> There's going to be, you know, millions
[02:14] here in Southern California. Millions
[02:16] coming to know Jesus. 20% of Southern
[02:19] Cal is going to be converted and coming
[02:21] TO KNOW JESUS CHRIST. 20. SO, YOU DO the
[02:23] math. I don't know the numbers.
[02:25] 20%. The population of Southern
[02:28] California is 24 million people. 20% of
[02:33] 24 million people is almost 5 million
[02:37] people. That's a lot of people. I just
[02:40] want to document this because I have so
[02:41] much back backlogged footage of Brian
[02:43] Simmons and weird stuff that he's done
[02:45] and he said and it's relevant because
[02:48] the man pretends to have private
[02:49] revelations from God that he's put into
[02:50] a translation that had been sold to
[02:52] millions of people endorsed by uh the
[02:54] Hillsong crew endorsed by a bunch of
[02:56] people in the in the Bethl crew the
[02:58] Chayon side of things and one scholar
[03:00] named David Householder who I don't know
[03:02] what he is thinking
[03:03] >> now there's been tons of evidence
[03:05] provided regarding some of the
[03:07] translation issues news statements about
[03:10] the Aramaic that weren't accurate and
[03:13] you guys could research that for
[03:14] yourself. Let me just give you guys two
[03:15] small examples of the issues of the
[03:16] passion if you guys aren't familiar.
[03:18] Here's one example. Michael Melissa Dory
[03:20] from a while ago. So, let me give you
[03:22] some examples, right? Here's the passion
[03:23] translation. Psalm 72:3. Listen for that
[03:26] phrase.
[03:26] >> Then the mountains of influence will be
[03:28] fruitful and from your righteousness,
[03:29] prosperity and peace will flow to all
[03:31] the people. Now, this sounds like a
[03:32] prophecy that that fits this sort of um
[03:35] apostolic pro prophetic movement that's
[03:38] going on where they're like, "We have
[03:39] these mountains of influence." But when
[03:40] you read it in a normal translation like
[03:41] the ESV, it doesn't mean that at all.
[03:43] >> Here's the ESV. Let the mountains bear
[03:45] prosperity for the people and the hills
[03:46] in righteousness.
[03:48] >> It's literally talking about like
[03:49] growing food
[03:50] >> and and and hunting animals on the
[03:52] mountains.
[03:53] >> Yeah. So there's tons of examples like
[03:54] this where they're basically reading in
[03:57] their theology, mountains of influence
[03:59] into this translation that's just not
[04:02] there unfortunately. Um so anyway, this
[04:04] has been going on and on. I think
[04:06] there's some more evidence that's going
[04:07] to be coming out soon. And again, not
[04:10] only is this like highly celebrated by
[04:11] the Bethl world, used as a translation,
[04:14] but it's also on the Bible app, the
[04:15] viewver app, which I I know some folks
[04:17] over there. I you know, they're very
[04:18] friendly and uh Craig Rochelle and that
[04:21] whole crew. I don't know how much of
[04:22] this they know, but it's it's really
[04:24] sad. So anyway, this came up where Mike
[04:26] tweeted about it and uh he said, "Long
[04:30] ago, I was asked if I would stop my
[04:32] criticism of the Passion Translation if
[04:34] they changed the name to reflect that it
[04:35] isn't really a translation. I said no,
[04:39] but I might be willing to consider that.
[04:41] If they named it after the author, we
[04:44] could have a deal. Allow me to suggest
[04:47] that they name it after Brian Simmons to
[04:49] correctly distinguish that it's his
[04:51] product and not the result of
[04:52] translating. This could communicate the
[04:55] value of the work well and avoid the
[04:56] confusion Brian has uh so far created. I
[04:59] I hereby suggest the BS version as a
[05:03] working and accurate title.
[05:08] I think that's funny. Now here here
[05:10] here's the the deeper conversation. As
[05:11] as funny as I think some of this is, I
[05:15] don't think this story uh is actually
[05:18] about just one Bible translation. I
[05:20] think there's a there's a bigger thing
[05:22] here. And it's not just people desiring
[05:25] to add words to scripture. We know
[05:27] according to Revelation that we
[05:28] shouldn't do that. But what it I think
[05:30] ultimately about when you start getting
[05:32] uh these sectarian translations which
[05:34] Wes Huff has discussed a lot with his
[05:36] graph on the Bible is that people are
[05:39] elevating their own authority above
[05:42] scripture. This pattern goes all the way
[05:45] back to Genesis 3 which we see in verse
[05:48] four. You will certainly not die. This
[05:50] is this is the serpent uh tricking Eve
[05:53] uh and lying to Eve. You will certainly
[05:55] not die. The serpent said to the woman,
[05:56] "For God knows that when you eat from
[05:58] it, from the tree good and evil, your
[06:00] eyes will be open, and you will be like
[06:03] God, knowing good and evil." And you
[06:06] know, the the woman eats of the tree.
[06:09] And it's elevating our view of things
[06:13] and our interpretation of things above
[06:16] God's very simple command to not eat of
[06:19] a particular tree, right? and then
[06:22] adding to God's word and elevating our
[06:25] own authority of it. So I think that's
[06:26] the that's the deeper issue is that
[06:28] someone claims special insight be beyond
[06:32] what God has said. Right? Prosperity
[06:35] preachers do this. Progressive
[06:36] Christianity do this. Hype clearly hyper
[06:38] charismatics do this. Deconstructionist
[06:40] and and and the uh deconstruction world
[06:42] do this. Cult leaders do do it. They you
[06:45] start with a conclusion and then you
[06:47] reread the scriptures into your own
[06:50] framework causing the same temptation.
[06:53] Trust me, my special insight is is is
[06:57] more in tune with the truth than what's
[07:01] plain in God's revealed word. Most
[07:04] Christians aren't going to create their
[07:05] own Bible translations, but they they do
[07:08] similar things like this, right? Right.
[07:10] And so the deeper question I think
[07:12] everybody gets to ask is, do I submit my
[07:15] preferences to scripture? Or do I bend
[07:19] scripture around my feelings? Do I treat
[07:22] God's word as an authority or as a raw
[07:25] material that that that that I could use
[07:28] to form whatever I want? So the question
[07:30] is, how do we all approach God's word?
[07:32] Do we approach God's word on his terms
[07:34] or do we read in our own views and
[07:37] biases and traditions into God's word?
[07:40] And I think ultimately this is way more
[07:42] important than one person being the
[07:44] villain of the story. The villain is the
[07:46] temptation that exists in every single
[07:48] one of us. The desire to make God sound
[07:51] more like us and our preferences and the
[07:53] desire to make the Bible affirm what we
[07:55] already want. the desire to become the
[07:59] authority instead of allowing scripture
[08:01] to be the authority that we view
[08:02] everything through. And on a deeper
[08:04] level, you can't faithfully steward what
[08:07] God has entrusted you with if you've
[08:10] already decided you're the authority
[08:12] over it. There's also a video coming
[08:14] out. I believe it's going to be on the
[08:15] Minor Profits podcast where Mike and uh
[08:20] John Mark Baker and another gentleman go
[08:22] over some of just obvious smoking guns
[08:25] with a passion translation. Uh and this
[08:28] is coming out very soon. So I think this
[08:30] will also really drive home the point of
[08:32] how bad this is.
[08:33] >> I believe we have conclusively
[08:34] demonstrated not just one deception, not
[08:36] just something over here, not just an
[08:37] isolated lie, a pattern of covering up,
[08:40] a pattern of deceiving the body of
[08:42] Christ. and to do so with the very words
[08:44] of God himself.
[08:45] >> I I shudder I shudder to think of what
[08:48] it would be like to stand before God and
[08:50] to have so twisted his words in the way
[08:51] that that the Passion translation is
[08:53] done.
[08:53] >> Amen.
[08:54] >> So obviously I think you know Mike is
[08:56] being tongue and cheek with the the BS
[08:59] version cuz Brian Simmons's initials is
[09:02] BS. Uh and I think that's I think that's
[09:04] hilarious. But I do think that there's a
[09:06] deeper conversation to be had about God,
[09:08] his word, his authority over our lives.
[09:11] And those of us that are in positions of
[09:13] leadership, those of us that are
[09:14] husbands, those of us that are fathers,
[09:16] those of us that are leaders, I think we
[09:18] all hold the unique responsibility to
[09:20] know the difference between what's true
[09:22] and what's not true and to pass on the
[09:25] truth to those we have influence over.
[09:28] And I say all that to say, you know
[09:29] what's not BS? Our priest, provider,
[09:31] protector, Father's Day sale that's
[09:34] here. In a world where everyone claims
[09:37] special insight, one of the most
[09:39] important jobs all of us can have, but
[09:41] particularly those of us who are dads,
[09:42] is helping our families discern what's
[09:45] actually rooted in God's word. That's
[09:48] one of the reasons why we made the
[09:49] priest provider protection collection,
[09:50] because fathers have a unique
[09:52] responsibility to do just that, to
[09:55] discern truth from falsehood. So, be
[09:58] sure to go to blessgod.co now. Pick up
[10:00] some Father's Day priest provider
[10:02] protector merch. Way to remind yourself
[10:04] what it is that you represent and the
[10:05] command that every single one of us have
[10:07] as men, as fathers to be the priest,
[10:10] provider, protector of our homes. We
[10:11] even have puzzles you can get as a
[10:13] family. We have hoodies, t-shirts, our
[10:14] leadership planner, which is something I
[10:16] use every single day to keep track of my
[10:18] calendar to also do my goal setting and
[10:22] my daily non-negotiables as well as take
[10:24] notes in. And it has a prayer journal
[10:25] inside of it. All of this is available
[10:27] and all of this is on sale right now.
[10:28] So, I say all that to say that the
[10:31] danger isn't in just bad translations.
[10:34] The danger is when any of us become more
[10:36] committed to our own ideas than God's
[10:39] word. The goal isn't to just win
[10:41] arguments online. It's to remain humble
[10:43] enough to keep submitting ourselves to
[10:45] scripture even when it challenges us.
[10:48] Because the moment we stop submitting
[10:50] under God's word and start standing over
[10:52] it, we've already started drifting. So,
[10:55] anyway, let me know what you guys think
[10:57] about those thoughts. And if you guys
[10:58] want to see when Mike Winger came to our
[10:59] bless summit and the conversation we
[11:01] had, check out this video over here.
[11:03] blesscod.co. Father's Day sale over
[11:05] here. All right, I'll see you guys
[11:06] later.
