The plugin now offers folding/unfolding capabilities at multiple detail levels, allowing users to manage complex information hierarchies visually. A redesigned input interface with tab navigation and contextual button rows improves usability for users unfamiliar with keyboard shortcuts. The PDF++ integration enables real-time note-taking where users can highlight PDF content and add it directly to mind maps while reading. These additions maintain live links to source documents and support Excalidraw's full editing capabilities including image cropping and manipulation. The markdown import feature converts document structures into mind maps automatically, parsing headings and creating navigable visual representations. Users can toggle between embedded content view and link view, enabling both overview navigation and detailed editing within the mind map interface. Enhanced grouping features include boundaries, decorations, frames, and cross-links that move dynamically with nodes. The tool supports four auto-layout strategies and allows extensive customization through Excalidraw's native formatting options while maintaining structural integrity through the rearrange function. ## ๐Ÿ—’๏ธ Notes #### โฑ๏ธ [00:00](https://youtu.be/5G9QF-u9w0Q?t=0) โ€” [H1] Introduction to MindMap Builder v3 - Key idea: Major version upgrade with folding, PDF integration, and full Obsidian integration - Evidence: "mindmap builder has now graduated to become a fully functional mind mapping tool 100% integrated with Obsidian MD" #### โฑ๏ธ [01:20](https://youtu.be/5G9QF-u9w0Q?t=80) โ€” [H2] Improved Input Interface - Key idea: Enhanced navigation with tab button and contextual button rows - Evidence: "with the tab button on the floating input, I can move between the buttons. I am super
[00:04] excited to introduce to you Mindmap
[00:07] Builder version 3. I have tons of new
[00:10] functionality such as folding and
[00:13] unfolding of nodes. Indeed, you can fold
[00:16] and unfold nodes at various levels of
[00:20] detail. So, you can completely fold or
[00:23] you can completely unfold a node. I have
[00:26] lots of other new features as well.
[00:29] I believe that mindmap builder has now
[00:32] graduated to become a fully functional
[00:35] mind mapping tool 100% integrated with
[00:39] Obsidian MD. Now the way I'm going to
[00:42] walk through this presentation today is
[00:45] I'm not going to go into the details of
[00:48] how you install and how you launch Mind
[00:50] Map Builder. I'm also not going to go
[00:52] into the very detail of features. I'm
[00:56] going to give you a quick overview. If
[00:59] you're interested and if you want to
[01:01] support further development of mind map
[01:04] builder, I created a course that you can
[01:07] buy for a few dollars and I'll talk
[01:10] about that in the end. But right now,
[01:13] let's just jump into the presentation.
[01:16] So, the basic features
[01:19] are essentially the same. You can build
[01:21] mind maps. I think there's a big new
[01:24] improvement with the input interface. So
[01:27] now with the tab button on the floating
[01:31] input, I can move between the buttons.
[01:34] And if I press enter, then there's an
[01:36] additional row of buttons that appear.
[01:39] And this is great if you forget the
[01:42] shortcut key because now there are many,
[01:44] many features and many shortcuts. So
[01:46] this just helps you navigate and use
[01:50] mindmap builder better. So I think
[01:53] that's a pretty nice new feature. Let me
[01:57] hide that. Now if we move on, I'm not
[02:00] going to talk about creating a map. I'll
[02:03] show you two examples in a little bit of
[02:06] time. Navigating the map. Again, we are
[02:09] not going to talk about that in detail
[02:11] today, but you can see that I am
[02:13] navigating this map with my keyboard and
[02:16] there are many features to support that.
[02:20] I am going to talk a little bit about
[02:22] hotkey configuration. Now, so here if I
[02:26] open the site panel, the mind map
[02:29] builder site panel, then under hotkey
[02:32] configuration, you can see that there
[02:34] are now many more hotkeys than before.
[02:37] And I think the real important bit you
[02:39] need to pay attention is these icons,
[02:42] the keyboard, the globe, and the excolro
[02:45] icon. You can set different scopes for
[02:49] hotkeys. And that means that for
[02:52] example, I don't need to select the
[02:55] input box to navigate the map. And I can
[02:59] add other features that only require
[03:02] Excel to be active. Because there are
[03:06] many there are so many hotkeys. I
[03:08] thought that this scoping helps avoid
[03:11] conflicts with other obsidian hotkeys
[03:14] and other stuff. So this way you can
[03:16] manage how you want to use mind map
[03:19] builder. I'm going to also show you when
[03:21] to use global hotkeys in just a second.
[03:25] Now if we look at advanced features, I
[03:28] think the advanced feature first about
[03:30] content integration. This should be
[03:32] familiar. So this is this story about
[03:36] your ability to add different type of
[03:39] embeddables. I talk about that in my
[03:41] previous video. I'm going to link it
[03:44] here so you can watch that and you can
[03:46] understand it in detail. And of course
[03:48] in the course I'm going to talk about
[03:51] this in detail. Essentially, you can add
[03:54] videos, web pages, or markdown documents
[03:57] or sections of documents. I think that's
[04:00] pretty cool. Now, a new amazing feature
[04:04] is how you can copy mindm builder and
[04:08] it's going to copy not only
[04:12] the structure like this, but it's also
[04:14] going to copy the cross links. And later
[04:18] on, you'll see that we now have
[04:20] boundaries as well. It's going to copy
[04:22] that as well. So if I press copy here
[04:27] and if I come to my scratchpad and I'm
[04:30] just going to press paste here then you
[04:33] can see that the map was imported
[04:38] including
[04:40] the boundary and including any of the
[04:44] cross links that were here. In fact,
[04:47] what has happened if I flip this around
[04:50] and just paste it in here, then now the
[04:55] generated markdown will include cross
[04:58] links to
[05:00] block references within the markdown
[05:04] bulleted list itself. And it's also
[05:07] going to include if something has a
[05:09] boundary, then it's going to include the
[05:12] tag boundary. that's going to show that
[05:15] that node has a boundary. So the
[05:18] markdown document that's created when
[05:22] you copy your map will include these.
[05:26] The the content will not include the
[05:30] additional images you add. So images
[05:33] that are added as nodes are going to be
[05:36] included. But images that are added
[05:39] separately as decorations like this one,
[05:43] those are not going to be in the
[05:46] exported
[05:47] markdown content. But again, I can show
[05:50] you some tricks around this in the
[05:53] course.
[05:54] PDF++ integration. I am absolutely
[05:59] excited about this one. Let me show you
[06:01] how it works. So, I'm going to open a
[06:05] PDF document here on the side. I'm going
[06:08] to hide this here. And let's open my map
[06:11] builder right there. And I'm going to
[06:15] scroll down to this section here. Let's
[06:18] select the root node. And I'm taking
[06:21] notes on this document. And let me show
[06:24] you how I can do that. And you're of
[06:27] course you can see I'm not moving the
[06:29] mouse over to my map builder. I can
[06:32] select different parts and I can just
[06:35] simply add elements to the map and as I
[06:40] am highlighting my text as I read this.
[06:43] So let's highlight this text I can just
[06:46] simply add [clears throat] that text
[06:48] into my map right here. Now the benefit
[06:51] of all of this is these are of course
[06:53] now links that take me to the relevant
[06:56] parts of the document and these are not
[07:00] screenshot images but they are actually
[07:03] images that come from here. In fact
[07:06] everything that is available in Xcolor
[07:09] draw in terms of handling
[07:12] these embeds are available. So I can in
[07:15] fact change the cropping of this image
[07:19] and you can see it changes in PDF++ as
[07:22] well. So all these good features are
[07:24] there. But yeah, I think I now have a
[07:28] pretty robust workflow for creating a
[07:32] mind map as I'm reading a PDF document.
[07:36] Let's clean this because the next
[07:39] feature I want to show you is also super
[07:42] exciting. So you can now import a
[07:45] markdown document structure as a mind
[07:48] map. So how does it work? If I come here
[07:52] and I add a new node, I created a sample
[07:55] document. So I created this sample with
[07:57] Chad GPT. The benefits of mind mapping.
[08:01] It's yeah, it's this document right
[08:03] here. Let's convert this into a mind
[08:06] map. So the way I do that
[08:08] [clears throat] is first of all, I'm
[08:09] going to add this document. So here's
[08:12] the benefits of mind mapping and you can
[08:14] see here this is the alias. So I'm going
[08:17] to click that and press enter.
[08:20] So the central node is here and this is
[08:22] of course now a link that takes me to
[08:25] this document.
[08:27] If I open these buttons there's a new
[08:30] feature here import headings from linked
[08:34] file as child nodes. You can do this
[08:36] with the root node or you can do this
[08:38] with any of the child nodes as well. And
[08:41] when I click on the button then the
[08:44] structure of the document was imported.
[08:46] Now this is already I think pretty nice.
[08:50] Of course each of these will take me to
[08:52] the relevant section in the document. So
[08:55] you can see here I can navigate the
[08:58] document like this. But I think what's
[09:00] super cool is for example let's take
[09:03] this node right here. I'm going to edit
[09:07] this node.
[09:08] And if I put an exclamation mark here, I
[09:13] can convert this
[09:15] into an embedible like that. And if now
[09:20] I click on my embedible, I can actually
[09:23] edit the node right here. And I am still
[09:28] here in my mind map. And if I want to
[09:31] convert this back, I can again edit
[09:34] this. And I can just place the original
[09:37] link there. And then I have my node back
[09:41] as it was before. I think this is a
[09:44] super powerful way for organizing and
[09:48] reading and editing your documents. You
[09:51] have a mindm view of your document and
[09:55] you can zoom in and edit various parts.
[09:59] You can do it either by clicking and
[10:01] opening the relevant part of the
[10:03] document or you can do it by adding
[10:06] embeddables.
[10:08] Now we have a set of new grouping
[10:11] features and you already saw the
[10:14] boundary. I think that's a pretty nice
[10:17] solution. I have a support for
[10:21] decorations. Decorations are icons that
[10:24] are grouped icons or any other text with
[10:28] a node. And when I'm moving these
[10:31] around, and this is going to be a next
[10:34] feature, but I want to show you already
[10:36] that I am actually able to move nodes
[10:39] around like this. So, you can see here
[10:42] I'm moving the node only with my
[10:45] keyboard. When I move nodes around, then
[10:49] it will move the decoration with it as
[10:52] well. I can add, of course, boxes or
[10:55] frames around nodes. And this is super
[10:58] helpful, for example, to create a
[11:01] background color for a node. You can, of
[11:04] course, toggle the boundaries. There's a
[11:07] button here, and I can add or remove the
[11:10] boundary. You know you can see that the
[11:11] boundary that appears now looks
[11:13] different because you can customize
[11:16] boundaries. Every feature that is there
[11:18] in Excel is of course available here to
[11:22] customize your boundaries. You cannot
[11:25] change the points of the boundary. So if
[11:27] I change the points the next time the
[11:29] boundary updates it will get the same
[11:31] shape. But I can change it from
[11:36] curvy to straight edges and then it
[11:39] looks different. By the way, I can also
[11:42] do this with the style of the map. So if
[11:45] I open this here, I scroll up here, I
[11:49] can change the line, the connector types
[11:52] from curved to straight and then you get
[11:55] a different look and feel for your map.
[11:58] So that's an option that you can do. And
[12:01] also you might notice if you've used the
[12:04] earlier version of mindmap builder that
[12:06] now these connectors connect much better
[12:09] to the end of the nodes and it I think
[12:11] it looks better. You can also add cross
[12:14] links. Not sure you noticed but here's a
[12:17] cross link which was of course hidden
[12:20] when this node was collapsed then the
[12:24] cross link has no meaning. If the node
[12:27] is then open again then the cross link
[12:30] is back. So the cross links are also
[12:33] managed and moved together with the
[12:36] nodes. And I think a cool feature and
[12:39] that comes from the fact that we are in
[12:41] Excel that you can format your nodes in
[12:45] any way you want. So I can take this box
[12:48] there and I can ch change the shape of
[12:50] it if I want to. I can change the font
[12:54] size and font face. Of course, when I do
[12:57] changes like this,
[13:00] don't touch the map. Touch the rearrange
[13:04] button and then my map builder takes
[13:07] care of everything. If you touch the map
[13:09] and you break the connections, then of
[13:12] course that is going to create an issue.
[13:15] And I'm going to talk about more of
[13:17] these tricks in the course. Now you can
[13:21] do some structural editing and by
[13:24] structural editing I mean moving nodes
[13:27] which I already showed you. Uh you can
[13:30] also move nodes by drag and drop. So for
[13:32] example I can move the miscellaneous
[13:35] section to the right hand side and when
[13:39] I rearrange the map then of course uh it
[13:43] is moved. There are again some tips and
[13:46] tricks here because if I now ungroup
[13:49] miscellaneous like this and I drag it
[13:52] back. At first you might be scared that
[13:55] what happens with those items and you
[13:58] might start to move them over. Don't.
[14:00] All you need to do is you need to press
[14:02] rearrange
[14:04] and it will bring everything to the
[14:06] other side. By the way, the right left
[14:10] map is a new type of map here. So we now
[14:13] have four type of auto layout strategies
[14:18] and let's close this because we are not
[14:21] yet talking about that. Um there were
[14:25] yes structural editing of course you can
[14:28] pin nodes you can fold nodes and you can
[14:32] also uh edit nodes and change the types.
[14:35] When I say change the types, that was
[14:38] the story right here that I can change
[14:41] the type by placing an exclamation mark
[14:44] here, making it an embeddible. And then
[14:46] I have the note here embedded. So that's
[14:50] a type change. It changed from text to a
[14:54] node. All right. We have lots of
[14:56] configurations. I won't go into this.
[14:59] You can explore it yourself. I'm going
[15:01] to explain it in the course. Also under
[15:04] miscellaneous uh you can export your map
[15:07] to PDF and PNG and copy it to Excel
[15:10] draw. You can also use it with the
[15:13] printable layout wizard. I cover all of
[15:15] this in the course. I think as an
[15:18] overview this is what I wanted to share.
[15:22] So let's open the entire map. So this is
[15:24] in a way the entire topic of the course
[15:29] and now just to focus on so what does
[15:32] the mindmap builder course talk about?
[15:35] Why should you get it and where can you
[15:37] get it? So you can click the link in the
[15:41] video description or just simply type
[15:43] this in
[15:43] visualthinkingworkshop.com/mindmap.
[15:48] The course is really just a few dollars.
[15:51] If you're an early bird, meaning you get
[15:53] the course in January, then at the
[15:56] beginning of February, I'm going to be
[15:57] hosting two calls. One for the
[16:01] Asia-Pacific time zone, the other for
[16:04] the Europe Europe,
[16:07] where you will have an opportunity to
[16:09] ask questions live in a Zoom call. The
[16:14] recording of that is going to be
[16:16] included in the course. And I guess the
[16:19] question is so why should you get the
[16:21] course? Well, I think first of all you
[16:24] will get to support the ongoing
[16:27] development of mindm builder and of
[16:30] obsidian xcol draw. You will learn the
[16:33] full power of the tool. There are many
[16:36] hidden features and tips and tricks that
[16:38] I built in
[16:41] and in that way you can skip weeks of
[16:44] trial and error. I think you can
[16:47] discover less obvious tricks of course
[16:50] and in the future when I add new
[16:53] features to mind map builder I don't
[16:55] plan to issue a fourth video about mindm
[16:59] builder version 4. I'm going to be
[17:02] adding those videos to the course. So
[17:05] that's how you can stay on top of the
[17:07] new features.
[17:09] And that's all I wanted to share with
[17:11] you today. I am super super excited
[17:16] about this. I think this opens up so
[17:19] many new possibilities that it's
[17:22] unbelievable.
[17:24] Enjoy my map builder. Join the course.
[17:28] See you on Zoom and have fun with visual
[17:32] thinking. Thank you.
