## ๐ Summary
- Dan McClellan responds to Rabbi Mordy's criticism of his biblical scholarship
- Clarifies his video warning policy against personal attacks on creators
- Defends his textual criticism argument about Genesis 4 contradicting flood narrative
- Addresses accusations of ignoring Jewish scholarship while maintaining academic methodology
- Emphasizes data-driven approach over dogmatic interpretations
## ๐ Main Content
McClellan addresses Rabbi Mordy's response video with three main clarifications. First, he explains his consistent policy of warning viewers against personal attacks on other creators' appearance or speech, which he's maintained for three years across 2,000 videos. Second, he reasserts his textual criticism argument that Genesis 4's genealogy contradicts the flood narrative because it describes people groups existing post-composition who should have been destroyed. Third, he defends his academic methodology against charges of ignoring Jewish scholarship, noting that much of his work relies on consensus established by Jewish scholars themselves, while distinguishing between scholarship and dogmatic tradition.

## ๐ฃ๏ธ Paraphrase
- McClellan clarifies his three-year policy of warning against personal attacks on other creators, which Rabbi Mordy misunderstood as a personal attack itself
- The core textual argument remains unaddressed: Genesis 4 describes people groups existing at composition time who should have been destroyed in the global flood described elsewhere
- Academic biblical criticism relies heavily on Jewish scholarship while distinguishing between scholarly evidence and dogmatic tradition that dismisses critical analysis
## ๐ฐ Newsletter
**Biblical Scholarship and Respectful Discourse**
Dan McClellan's response to Rabbi Mordy highlights important principles for online theological discussion. His consistent policy against appearance-based attacks shows how content creators can foster substantive debate while maintaining dignity.
The core disagreement centers on textual criticism methodologyโspecifically whether Genesis 4's genealogies contradict the flood narrative. McClellan argues that describing contemporary people groups as descendants of pre-flood figures creates logical inconsistencies with a global flood account.
This exchange illustrates the ongoing tension between traditional religious interpretation and academic biblical criticism, even when both draw from similar scholarly traditions.

[00:00] Dan, it was so nice of you to make a
[00:02] reply to my video. And actually, I want
[00:04] to commend you. You actually tagged me.
[00:07] There are a lot of people who try to
[00:08] reply to my video and don't have the
[00:10] courtesy to tag me. So, thank you for
[00:12] that.
[00:12] >> All right, let's see it.
[00:14] >> What is this? What are you trying to
[00:16] say? I've never seen that in other
[00:19] videos. Are you trying to say something
[00:20] about me? Is that where you're coming
[00:22] from? So, for about 3 years now, I've
[00:25] been adding that warning to every single
[00:27] video I make where I'm responding to
[00:28] somebody else's video. And I always put
[00:31] it on the first clip I'm providing of
[00:34] the other person's video. And I started
[00:36] adding it because I was getting pretty
[00:39] sick of seeing people engaging with
[00:41] response videos by mocking or
[00:43] criticizing somebody else's appearance
[00:45] or speech. And I consider that to be out
[00:47] of bounds. So, I started putting that
[00:49] warning on my videos. And if I see
[00:52] people just ignoring it, then I block
[00:53] them. And I think you only need one hand
[00:57] to count the number of times over the
[00:59] last 2,000 videos that I've made where I
[01:02] have accidentally omitted that warning.
[01:05] But that is something I've been doing
[01:07] for years now. And in the three or so
[01:10] years of putting that warning on videos,
[01:13] you are now the second person to mistake
[01:16] my warning not to personally attack
[01:18] other creators as a personal attack.
[01:23] >> Listen, we could go at length about
[01:25] this. The bottom line is all of Genesis
[01:28] 4 is irrelevant when you talk about
[01:30] Genesis 5.
[01:32] >> Yeah, I know. Because Genesis 5 is again
[01:36] the genealogy that's getting to Abraham.
[01:39] It gets to Noah. Those are the 10
[01:40] generations of Noah. Of course, the
[01:42] Torah goes on tangents. It gives the
[01:44] genealogy of Asov. It gives the
[01:46] genealogy of Ishmael. It gives other
[01:49] genealologies. Sure.
[01:50] >> Okay. Well, that directly contradicts
[01:52] what you said in your previous video.
[01:55] And that's on you. That's not on me. And
[01:59] this still doesn't address the concerns,
[02:02] >> but for a purpose. Exactly like you
[02:03] said, the people who lived in tents,
[02:05] which we have to learn about because
[02:07] Jacob is called a person who dwells in a
[02:09] tent and the people who make the liar
[02:10] because David played the liar, etc.,
[02:13] etc. So, there are reasons why the Torah
[02:15] goes off of tangents. That's true.
[02:17] >> So, this is a straw man fallacy that
[02:18] doesn't even acknowledge, much less
[02:20] actually engage my concern. My concern
[02:23] is not for explaining why the author of
[02:25] Genesis 4 would bother talking about
[02:28] Lamech and his three sons. that is your
[02:31] concern because you're the one who said
[02:33] all the genealogies do one thing and
[02:36] then I pointed out that this genealogy
[02:38] does not do that one thing and then you
[02:39] said well of course not all of the
[02:41] genealogies do the one thing that's not
[02:43] my concern that's your concern I was
[02:45] just pointing out the problems with your
[02:48] concern my concern is the fact that
[02:51] Genesis 4 had to have been composed
[02:54] after the flood
[02:57] and Genesis 4 directly contradicts
[03:00] the account of the flood because Genesis
[03:03] 4 talks about the three sons of Lamech
[03:05] as the ancestors of three separate
[03:08] people groups who are described as
[03:11] existing
[03:13] during the time when Genesis 4 was
[03:15] composed and if there was a global flood
[03:18] as the priestly and a non-priestly
[03:21] account insist they should not have been
[03:24] around because they are not descended
[03:26] from Noah and they should have been
[03:29] annihilated in the global flood cuz the
[03:32] text says so and so was the ancestor of
[03:36] all those who dwell in tents and keep
[03:39] livestock.
[03:40] That's talking about people who are
[03:42] doing that at the time Genesis 4 was
[03:44] composed. They shouldn't exist because
[03:48] the descendants of the three sons of
[03:51] Lamech should have all been destroyed in
[03:54] the flood. It's not saying, "Oh, these
[03:57] are the ancestors of these three people
[04:00] groups who don't exist right now, but
[04:02] should remind you of Jacob and David and
[04:04] so on." It's saying these people are
[04:07] around and the three sons of Lamech are
[04:10] the ancestors of these three people
[04:12] groups. And that just flatly contradicts
[04:14] the account of the flood. cannot have
[04:18] those three people groups in the time
[04:20] when Genesis 4 was composed and also
[04:23] have a global flood that killed
[04:25] everybody but Noah and his descendants.
[04:27] That just doesn't work.
[04:29] >> Your premise was that they're two
[04:31] different authors. Clearly, they're not.
[04:35] >> You have provided absolutely zero
[04:37] argument or evidence to support your
[04:40] assertion that they clearly were not two
[04:43] separate authors. And let me also say
[04:45] one other thing is that when I said you
[04:49] don't have an iota of what the Torah is
[04:51] talking about, I find it interesting
[04:53] that you wholesale disregard every
[04:56] Jewish piece of scholarship.
[04:58] >> This is entirely false. A lot of the
[05:00] scholarship that I rely on is written by
[05:02] Jewish scholars.
[05:04] >> You everyone calls you out. I made a
[05:06] video and everyone calls you out as the
[05:08] greatest scholar known to man. Scholar
[05:10] consensus. I don't think that's an
[05:13] accurate characterization of what
[05:14] happened here. I think what happened is
[05:16] that you made a video presuming to speak
[05:19] down to me and to dismiss me as knowing
[05:22] nothing about the Torah and then people
[05:25] called you out for rhetorically getting
[05:28] out over your skis. I don't think I saw
[05:31] anyone say that I was the best scholar
[05:33] ever. I'm very clearly not. I'm just
[05:35] somebody trying to represent the
[05:37] academic consensus on things.
[05:40] Where are the thousands of years of
[05:42] Jewish scholarship in your work? Jews
[05:46] have a tradition. We study this all the
[05:48] time. And for 4,000 years, we do have
[05:51] Jewish scholarship to wholesale ignore
[05:53] an entire people's scholarship on a work
[05:57] when for 4,000 years that is their life.
[06:00] I think it's a little bit saying that
[06:02] you're not complete when it comes to
[06:05] scholarly consensus.
[06:07] Any questions? Let me know. So, you've
[06:09] not even acknowledged, much less engaged
[06:12] my argument. You've just misrepresented
[06:14] it. And now you're trying to just
[06:16] unilaterally dismiss it all because I
[06:19] have committed the sin of failing to
[06:23] engage 4,000 years of scholarship
[06:27] when a lot of what I'm talking about is
[06:30] consensus established precisely by
[06:32] Jewish scholars. I think you're not
[06:34] talking about Jewish scholarship. You're
[06:36] talking about certain Jewish dogmas,
[06:39] which is no different from Christians
[06:41] telling me, "How dare I talk about the
[06:44] Trinity without engaging 2,000 years of
[06:48] Christian authoritative tradition?"
[06:51] That's just dogmatism.
[06:53] And as I hopefully have made clear, my
[06:56] channel seeks to put data over dogma.
[06:59] So, if you have data to which you can
[07:01] point within that scholarship that
[07:04] actually engages my concerns and shows
[07:06] that I'm wrong, by all means, point me
[07:08] to it. I will directly engage it. But to
[07:12] just say there's 4,000 years of
[07:14] scholarship and anything you say is
[07:16] illegitimate unless and until you
[07:18] directly engage all of it, that's just
[07:21] laughable rhetorical deflection. Do
[07:23] better. And the fit for this video is
[07:26] Adonai and his Asher.
