Curtis found this plugin shortly after creating his Obsidian 2026 setup video, where he had struggled with unreliable web clipping tools that required double entry and failed to capture complete information. The plugin offers minimal but effective configuration options, allowing users to specify destination folders, customize metadata properties (links, bylines, dates), and configure automatic tagging systems. Users can set tag prefixes to organize clipped content systematically. Two primary workflows enable content capture: using Obsidian's command palette with "slurp create note from URL" or implementing a JavaScript bookmark for direct browser integration. The bookmark method requires one-time permission setup per domain due to browser security protocols, but provides seamless one-click clipping thereafter. ## ๐Ÿ—’๏ธ Notes #### โฑ๏ธ [00:00](https://youtu.be/3-ZNBMnA7yA?t=0) โ€” [H1] Introduction to Slurp Plugin Problem - Key idea: Found Slurp plugin shortly after struggling with broken web clipper extensions - Evidence: "Firefox or Zen extension wasn't working and gave me some notes but not all information" #### โฑ๏ธ [01:15](https://youtu.be/3-ZNBMnA7yA?t=75) โ€” [H2] Installing Slurp Plugin - Key idea: Install through community plugins browser by searching for read-later tools - Evidence: "Go to browse, search read later, and find slurp" #### โฑ๏ธ [01:45](https://youtu.be/3-ZNBMnA7yA?t=105) โ€” [H3] Basic Plugin Configuration - Key idea: Minimal settings required, mostly left defaults unchanged - Evidence: "Set folder to sources/clippings, honestly just left everything the same" #### โฑ๏ธ [02:30](https://youtu.be/3-ZNBMnA7yA?t=150) โ€” [H3] Properties and Metadata Options - Key idea: Customize which metadata fields appear in clipped notes - Evidence: "Change properties that show up: link, byline, site date, updated" #### โฑ๏ธ [03:00](https://youtu.be/3-ZNBMnA7yA?t=180) โ€” [H3] Tag Parsing Configuration - Key idea: Automatic tag generation from site domains with optional prefixes - Evidence: "Parse tags gives you tags for sites like abc7news.com, can add tag prefix like slurp-" #### โฑ๏ธ [03:45](https://youtu.be/3-ZNBMnA7yA?t=225) โ€” [H2] Command Palette Method - Key idea: Copy URL and use command palette to create note from URL - Evidence: "Control L then Control C, go to Obsidian, type slurp create note from URL" #### โฑ๏ธ [04:30](https://youtu.be/3-ZNBMnA7yA?t=270) โ€” [H2] Successful Content Parsing - Key idea: Plugin correctly parses WordPress content with proper formatting - Evidence: "Came in with byline, excerpt, knew how to parse WordPress with title" #### โฑ๏ธ [05:15](https://youtu.be/3-ZNBMnA7yA?t=315) โ€” [H2] JavaScript Bookmark Setup - Key idea: Create browser bookmark with JavaScript code for one-click clipping - Evidence: "Grab JavaScript code, add bookmark, name it slurp, paste JavaScript" #### โฑ๏ธ [06:00](https://youtu.be/3-ZNBMnA7yA?t=360) โ€” [H3] Browser Security Permissions - Key idea: First use requires permission approval for each domain - Evidence: "Browser security asks 'always allow', click this for 404media site only" #### โฑ๏ธ [06:30](https://youtu.be/3-ZNBMnA7yA?t=390) โ€” [H2] Successful Browser Integration - Key idea: After permission setup, content transfers seamlessly to Obsidian - Evidence: "Hit open link, go back to Obsidian, now pulled in that content" #### โฑ๏ธ [07:00](https://youtu.be/3-ZNBMnA7yA?t=420) โ€” [H1] Plugin Effectiveness Summary - Key idea: Slurp replaced non-functional web clipper solutions effectively - Evidence: "Taken place of read later obsidian web clipper plugin because it works and those didn't" #### โฑ๏ธ [07:30](https://youtu.be/3-ZNBMnA7yA?t=450) โ€” [H3] Community and Newsletter Promotion - Key idea: Curtis promotes membership and book club newsletter - Evidence: "Support channel curtismale.ca/membership, join newsletter curtismale.ca/bookclub" #### โฑ๏ธ [08:00](https://youtu.be/3-ZNBMnA7yA?t=480) โ€” [H3] Current Reading Discussion - Key idea: Book club reading "Takeback the Fight" about digital feminism - Evidence: "Reading about feminism in digital era, corporate feminism weaponized against us" ## ๐Ÿ“š References - [Slurp Plugin GitHub](https://github.com/inouetakuya/obsidian-slurp) - [Curtis McHale Membership](https://curtismale.ca/membership) - [Curtis McHale Book Club](https://curtismale.ca/bookclub) ## ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ Paraphrase - Slurp plugin solves web clipping problems by providing reliable content capture from web pages into Obsidian with proper formatting and metadata - Two integration methods exist: command palette workflow for manual clipping and JavaScript bookmarks for seamless browser integration - Minimal configuration required with sensible defaults, though customization options available for folders, properties, and automatic tagging systems ## ๐Ÿ“ฐ Newsletter **New Obsidian Web Clipper Solution: Slurp Plugin** Struggling with unreliable web clipping in Obsidian? Today we're going to talk about
[00:02] Slurp uh for Obsidian, which helps me
[00:04] save web pages. Uh I found it literally
[00:06] just after, possibly the day after,
[00:08] maybe even a few hours later. Uh I did
[00:10] my Obsidian 2026 setup video, like I
[00:13] showed you all the plugins, everything.
[00:14] I'll link that wherever it is above. Um
[00:17] and I talked about how to read it later
[00:18] and the Obsidian web clipper uh
[00:21] extensions and like uh Firefox or I use
[00:24] Zen extension wasn't working and I had
[00:26] to like it gave me some of the notes but
[00:28] not all the information. and I had to
[00:29] like do double entry and it was
[00:31] ultimately just a pain in the butt.
[00:32] That's it. It was a pain in the butt.
[00:34] So, uh just after that I searched read
[00:37] later in the community plugin and I
[00:38] found slurp. Let's take a look at slurp
[00:42] and we have So, let's start here by just
[00:46] going to the settings. And if we're
[00:49] going to get slurp, we would go to
[00:51] community plugins check. Oh, not check
[00:53] for updates. We go to browse. We'd
[00:55] search read later. Uh and a slurp. Oh,
[00:58] what did I find then? I don't know. I
[01:01] don't remember what my search term was
[01:02] clearly. Slurp. So, I have it installed.
[01:04] If you don't have it installed, this
[01:05] will say install and enable. And if you
[01:07] don't even see community plugins, then
[01:09] there'll be a right here to turn on uh
[01:11] community plugins. Uh, and then we can
[01:13] come to our settings slurp. And there's
[01:16] only a few. So, I set the folder sources
[01:18] clippings. Uh, I honestly just left
[01:21] everything the same, right? You can
[01:22] change the properties that show up. So
[01:25] the link, the by line, the site date,
[01:27] updated, all that stuff. Uh onion. Uh so
[01:30] if you want uh that's on tour if you
[01:32] want to link to that. Uh I don't do
[01:33] anything with there. I didn't add any
[01:35] new properties. Uh you can parse tags.
[01:37] So this uh here will like give you tags
[01:39] for the sites, right? You can see
[01:40] abc7news.com.
[01:42] Uh stuff like this. It will give you a
[01:44] bunch of tags and it can be problematic.
[01:47] The author says or because it gives you
[01:48] a lot of tags and you also tag prefix.
[01:50] So you could tag it slurp dash and every
[01:52] tag would then get slurp at the
[01:54] beginning. didn't do it. Uh maybe I
[01:56] think I touched this just to look at it.
[01:57] I don't know if I changed it though.
[01:59] That would be the case of your uh tags.
[02:02] Not even coming up right now, so I'm not
[02:04] sure why. Um that So you can change them
[02:06] and then some debug stuff. So I didn't
[02:10] really do any of that. Um but let's
[02:13] start with how we use it. Uh I think it
[02:15] was what eight. And so uh and I'm going
[02:18] to use uh key command y. Okay, so I use
[02:21] Vime C in my browser which lets me
[02:23] control everything from my browser.
[02:25] Otherwise, you'd hit uh I do control L
[02:27] and then control C. I think it's command
[02:29] L and C uh to do it in Mac. Uh it should
[02:31] be control L and C in Windows. And then
[02:33] we'll go back to seven. Uh so I
[02:36] hyperland. So super seven for me to get
[02:37] to this workspace. And I would type
[02:40] slurp create note from URL. I paste the
[02:42] note in hit enter. That's it. Just comes
[02:45] on. Came in my by line. uh came in my
[02:48] excerpt so it knew how to parse
[02:49] WordPress with the title and it brought
[02:52] it all in for me. And then I could
[02:53] highlight my content if I wanted. Now I
[02:55] can also go delete a current file. We go
[03:00] back to the browser uh and look at slurp
[03:03] here. Uh you find it on GitHub.
[03:06] I guess you also find it in the
[03:07] community plugins. Um but right here it
[03:10] talks about using the bookmark in a
[03:12] browser extension. So, um, because
[03:14] they're going to come up with browser
[03:15] extensions soon, he says, and you can
[03:17] grab this bit of JavaScript. So, you can
[03:19] hit copy. And I already Oh, you can't
[03:22] see it because I have Oh, Slurp is right
[03:23] there. Sweet. Oh, I have a bunch of
[03:26] other stuff. I need to
[03:28] My power went out. So, clearly my
[03:30] bookmarks have uh doubled and I need to
[03:33] kill some of them,
[03:35] which we'll do another time because I
[03:37] don't need to do it now for you. Delete.
[03:40] Uh, and so slurp is already in there.
[03:43] You would come up here and hit uh add
[03:45] bookmark. Is it going to show me? Add
[03:48] bookmark. I'd name it slurp. And I'd
[03:52] paste in the JavaScript. I'm not going
[03:53] to do that because I already have it
[03:54] here. And then I can go to the site and
[03:57] I can hit slurp.
[04:01] And it should come over into Obsidian.
[04:04] Right. There you go. Came in there right
[04:06] away. Now, what you'll find too, let's
[04:08] go to delete
[04:11] current file because I don't need it.
[04:14] And we'll go back to 8. Uh, let's find
[04:17] another site. Oh, site should we go?
[04:19] Let's go to 404
[04:22] media
[04:25] and just grab anything here. So, what
[04:28] you'll find though in
[04:31] slurp uh because of browser security
[04:33] stuff, which is good. This is a good
[04:35] thing. Um, if we hit the bookmark lit
[04:37] now, it's going to ask always allow. So,
[04:39] now that I've clicked this, it will
[04:41] always allow uh 44 media, the site only
[04:45] to send content to Obsidian. Now, I can
[04:47] hit open link. And if I go back, you can
[04:50] see I've now pulled in that content.
[04:55] I'll delete it again because I don't
[04:57] need that.
[04:59] So, that slurp, I like it. It has taken
[05:01] uh the place of my other content. Uh,
[05:05] like I said, the read later obsidian web
[05:06] clipper plugin. Uh, because it works and
[05:09] those that didn't. That's it. If you
[05:11] like the video, thumbs up below,
[05:12] subscribe, all that stuff. You can
[05:13] support the channel by becoming a
[05:15] member, curtismale.ca/membership.
[05:18] Um, or you can join the newsletter,
[05:20] curtismale.ca/book club, one word, where
[05:23] we uh are currently reading Takeback the
[05:26] Fight, which is about feminism in the
[05:28] digital era. I finished reading it. Uh
[05:30] and there's a certainly a few two or
[05:31] three real key uh good ideas about uh
[05:34] activism and how to take it forward or
[05:36] about how um neoliberalism
[05:39] uh corporate feminism, corporate
[05:41] anything really uh is used uh weaponized
[05:44] against us which ties into dark PR uh by
[05:46] Grant Inis as well.
