Her philosophical education has become the foundation for her community leadership approach, emphasizing that "philosophy is the foundation of all disciplines."
The discussion highlights a critical issue in technology: the tendency to dehumanize interactions and forget that people are at the center of all business and community efforts. Job argues that philosophical training helps maintain focus on human impact and ethical considerations.

[00:00] Hi everyone and welcome to the WP
[00:03] Minute. I'm Eric Caravac.
[00:05] This episode features a segment from my
[00:08] interview with Mary Job. Mary stopped by
[00:10] to discuss community leadership and
[00:12] building sustainable practices.
[00:15] Now you can catch the entire interview
[00:17] over on our WP Minute Plus channel.
[00:20] Visit the wpmin.com for all the details.
[00:25] I have to admit I went back and read
[00:27] your Hero Press essay from I think it
[00:29] was 2017.
[00:30] >> Yes, it was way back.
[00:33] >> I loved your story because a lot of us
[00:35] in the WordPress space, we don't start
[00:37] out in technology necessarily and I see
[00:40] that you studied philosophy in school
[00:43] which is awesome. So, how did you come
[00:45] to WordPress and how do you think your
[00:48] studies maybe helped you along the way?
[00:52] Okay. So, this is interesting because um
[00:55] usually there's this common saying back
[00:57] at home that when you find people
[00:59] studying philosophy, history,
[01:02] uh some hearts related subjects, it's
[01:05] usually because they were given that
[01:07] subject. So like in our part when you're
[01:09] going to the university, you have to
[01:11] pick like your first and your second
[01:13] choice, right? And growing up, I always
[01:16] wondered B administration, you know? And
[01:19] then I had to ask myself at a point like
[01:21] what exactly is business administration?
[01:23] I suck at math. So why am I even trying
[01:25] to do business administration? So I was
[01:27] like no. So I took the broker and I was
[01:29] like let me see where I fit in. Right.
[01:32] And I read all of the subjects there
[01:34] that you could study in university
[01:36] because it's like a universal bro for
[01:38] Nigeria. And I found the philosopher. I
[01:41] was like oh wow this is this sounds
[01:43] exactly like who I am. This is this is
[01:46] me. And I remember telling my dad like,
[01:48] "I'm not doing business admin again. I'm
[01:50] doing philosophy." And my dad was like,
[01:51] "Are you sure?" He asked me like
[01:53] multiple times like, "Are you sure?" I'm
[01:55] like, "Yeah, I'm very very sure. I want
[01:57] to study philosophy." So that's how I
[02:00] got into philosophy.
[02:03] >> That that Well, that's great. I I can I
[02:05] can relate to that as as a father. Are
[02:08] you sure you want to do that one?
[02:10] But I mean, it's something you obviously
[02:13] you have a passion for it. um h how has
[02:16] that helped you in community building
[02:18] it? Do do you feel like it's given you
[02:20] um a different perspective on it maybe
[02:22] than somebody else might have?
[02:24] >> Yes, like I said, just knowing what the
[02:27] cross stood for, uh I could totally
[02:31] connect to it. I could like, yes, this
[02:33] is so me. So, it for me, it wasn't like
[02:36] I was given the cross. I chose the
[02:38] cross. And I chose it because it
[02:41] reflects who I am as a person and who I
[02:44] am today. Like it's it's literally like
[02:47] the foundation of my life, you know, on
[02:49] everything that I've been doing. So it's
[02:51] sort of followed me all the way uh even
[02:55] today. And I mean philosophy is the
[02:58] foundation of all disciplines. So yes,
[03:00] it's it's followed me all the way and up
[03:03] till today into what I do is you know
[03:05] the principles the you everything about
[03:09] it just flows into uh uh being human uh
[03:14] being a part of the community you know
[03:17] and stuff like that.
[03:19] >> Well I I think um that's nice because in
[03:22] technology we tend not to um we tend to
[03:25] de dehumanize each other sometimes in
[03:27] technology. I think philosophy might
[03:29] actually be we probably need more
[03:31] philosophers in tech. I don't know what
[03:32] you think about that.
[03:33] >> Yeah. Yeah. No, no, I I agree because
[03:35] when you look at the ethical bit, the
[03:37] ethical angle, that's actually like we
[03:40] need and and that's what I'm exploring
[03:42] these days like we seem to have
[03:44] forgotten that at the at the bottom of
[03:48] who we serve as people. Whether you're a
[03:50] business owner or you're a community
[03:52] person or whatever you do, people are at
[03:55] the center of it. And we seem to be
[03:57] forgetting that right. So I think we
[04:00] need a reminder and coming from that p
[04:02] uh from that uh field it helps me
[04:06] >> to remind myself like people are at the
[04:09] at the bottom of everything you're
[04:10] doing. You're here for people. I mean
[04:13] what's life without making an impact on
[04:15] people? I don't know what kind of life
[04:16] that would be if you haven't impacted
[04:19] anybody in any small way. It doesn't
[04:21] have to be big.
[04:24] >> Exactly. Exactly. even you know I mean
[04:26] there's a lot of pursuit of money and
[04:27] things like that but really if you're
[04:29] not impacting people then what good is
[04:31] it make someone's life better
[04:34] >> yeah there's nothing wrong with the
[04:35] pursuit of money but who's going to pay
[04:38] you that money people
[04:41] >> right
[04:41] >> that's a great point
[04:43] >> people not not systems not I mean people
[04:47] humans are still going to pay that
[04:49] Funny.
