The most significant addition is the AI connector screen, which centralizes API key management for Anthropic, Google, and OpenAI services. This creates unified infrastructure for themes and plugins to access AI capabilities without requiring individual API configurations. The dashboard receives substantial user experience improvements with a new color scheme and JavaScript-powered navigation that eliminates full page reloads. This creates an app-like feel with smooth transitions between admin screens. ### Key Feature Updates The command palette gains permanent visibility in the toolbar while maintaining Command+K keyboard access. The font library interface improves font loading and preview capabilities within the appearance menu. Visual revisions replace the condensed revisions panel with in-editor visualization, though real-time collaboration features were removed from this release to focus development resources. ### Developer Experience Enhancements The block editor transitions to iframe architecture, potentially simplifying styling for custom blocks and plugin interfaces. New block visibility controls for responsive breakpoints become core functionality, reducing dependency on third-party plugins. A significant addition allows developers to create blocks using PHP-only for server-side rendering scenarios, eliminating the need to mix PHP and JavaScript for certain use cases. The data views and data forms experience continues development as foundation for future admin interface redesign, supporting block-based admin customization. ## ๐Ÿ—’๏ธ Notes #### โฑ๏ธ [00:00:15](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NV-MKz8pXkM?t=15) AI Foundation Introduction - AI connector screen is biggest feature in WordPress 7.0 - Supports Anthropic, Google, OpenAI API key activation - Creates unified infrastructure for plugin/theme AI access #### โฑ๏ธ [00:01:12](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NV-MKz8pXkM?t=72) Dashboard Visual Updates - New color scheme and loading transitions - JavaScript-powered navigation eliminates page reloads - More app-native feel with smooth ease in/out effects #### โฑ๏ธ [00:02:05](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NV-MKz8pXkM?t=125) Command Palette Accessibility - Now anchored to toolbar in upper left corner - Maintains Command+K keyboard shortcut - Potential future for chatbot integration and WP-CLI queries #### โฑ๏ธ [00:02:45](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NV-MKz8pXkM?t=165) Font Library and Visual Revisions - Improved font loading and preview in appearance menu - Visual revisions replace condensed panel view - Real-time collaboration removed from roadmap #### โฑ๏ธ [00:03:30](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NV-MKz8pXkM?t=210) Editor Iframe Architecture - Block editor now runs in iframe - Simplifies styling for custom blocks and plugins - Improves developer experience for editor interfaces #### โฑ๏ธ [00:04:15](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NV-MKz8pXkM?t=255) Block Visibility and PHP Development - Core block visibility controls for responsive design - PHP-only block development for server-side rendering - Eliminates need to mix PHP and JavaScript #### โฑ๏ธ [00:05:00](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NV-MKz8pXkM?t=300) Data Views and Admin Future - Foundation for future admin redesign - Supports block-based admin customization - Continues evolution toward new admin experience #### โฑ๏ธ [00:06:00](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NV-MKz8pXkM?t=360) Testing Recommendations - Use playground.wordpress.net for testing - Test in staging environments before updating - Check host compatibility and rollout timing ## ๐Ÿ“š References - [WordPress Playground](https://playground.wordpress.net) - [WP Minute Courses](https://wpminute.com/courses) - WordPress 7.0 Make Blog Post (field guide referenced but not linked) ## ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ Paraphrase WordPress 7.0 establishes AI integration infrastructure through centralized API management while improving the admin user experience with smoother navigation and visual updates. It's
[00:01] WordPress 7 in 7 minutes. Here we go.
[00:06] All right, starting from the top, the
[00:07] biggest feature in WordPress 7.0 is not
[00:11] even really a feature. It's the
[00:13] foundation for artificial intelligence.
[00:15] It's AI. It's the connector screen
[00:18] inside of WordPress 7. I have it up on
[00:21] screen. Many of you who have already
[00:23] updated or watch other videos in this on
[00:25] this channel before know a little bit
[00:27] about it. We can activate Anthropic,
[00:30] Google, Open AI API keys right inside of
[00:33] our
[00:35] WordPress installation.
[00:36] And it lays the I don't know what
[00:38] metaphors I can use here, the
[00:39] foundation, the plumbing for AI to talk
[00:43] to other plugins and theme functions who
[00:47] want to access AI. This is WordPress'
[00:50] decision to say, instead of every theme
[00:53] and plugin having a space for the user
[00:56] to connect to AI, any popular models
[00:58] will be listed in the connector screen,
[01:01] and let's just have one place to say
[01:03] this is where you activate AI, and then
[01:05] all of the plugins and themes can run
[01:08] through this. So, as I've been saying
[01:10] about all of the last year's worth of
[01:14] WordPress updates, we're almost there
[01:17] to that next big step for WordPress.
[01:20] Something very minor but worth noting is
[01:22] that the dashboard does look slightly
[01:25] different today.
[01:26] We have a different color screen, and we
[01:28] also have a different feel for how the
[01:31] pages load inside of WordPress. So, if
[01:34] you've already made your updates to
[01:35] WordPress 7, or you are smart and
[01:37] started playing with WordPress 7 in the
[01:39] playground before updating, you know
[01:41] that there's like this new JavaScripty
[01:43] view, native app kind of feel that when
[01:46] you click on things in WordPress, it's
[01:48] not waiting for that screen to reload
[01:49] and repaint the entire dashboard. Now,
[01:51] it sort of has this nice ease in and
[01:53] ease out transition of loading, and it
[01:55] feels a lot more app native, right? It
[01:58] just feels quicker and faster
[02:00] at least visually and that's a welcome
[02:03] change.
[02:07] The beloved command palette is now stuck
[02:10] in place, anchored to the toolbar up
[02:13] top. It's always been command K on Mac
[02:15] to pull that up and now it's up in the
[02:17] upper left-hand corner. Users can now
[02:19] click that to activate the command
[02:20] palette so it just gives you this empty
[02:22] bar. I think I'd rather empty input
[02:25] field. I'd rather have it like
[02:28] [clears throat] have a little bit more
[02:29] explanation, maybe start to fill in
[02:32] a bit more of the browser window like oh
[02:34] this thing is here for
[02:36] for me to input some kind of command not
[02:39] just
[02:40] this tiny little input field which
[02:42] almost looks like am I just searching
[02:43] the page for something here? I also feel
[02:45] like the command K is going to be
[02:47] pivotal for anyone who want to maybe
[02:50] even build chatbots into like I can
[02:52] definitely see a future where opening up
[02:56] the command palette is like opening up
[02:58] the command line on your desktop and
[03:02] doing things with WordPress, executing
[03:04] commands, talking to a chatbot, running
[03:06] WP-CLI
[03:07] queries and stuff like that. So
[03:09] interesting to see hopeful to see some
[03:12] new emphasis on the command palette.
[03:13] This is a two-for-one on this screen.
[03:15] The font library has been updated.
[03:17] That's really cool. Now you can actually
[03:18] load the font, see the fonts a little
[03:20] bit easier in the appearance menu and
[03:23] then the visual revisions is really
[03:25] cool. Now we lost real-time
[03:27] collaboration. It was cut from the
[03:30] WordPress 7 road map for now.
[03:33] Welcome to change so that the team can
[03:35] really focus on improving WordP
[03:37] WordPress where where it's really
[03:39] needed. Having trouble talking.
[03:40] And visual revisions, I don't know if it
[03:43] was a part of that or if it fell off the
[03:45] tree of real-time collaboration, but now
[03:48] you can actually see stuff in the editor
[03:51] instead of just like being condensed
[03:53] into a revisions panel. So, really cool
[03:55] to see visual revisions in WordPress 7.
[03:57] I'd love some input on this. The iframe
[03:59] editor stuff in the editor is now in an
[04:02] iframe which allegedly makes developing
[04:04] blocks and interfaces inside the editor
[04:07] a little bit easier
[04:09] for developers. I started to develop a
[04:12] podcast plugin a few months back. It has
[04:15] been a pain in the neck to try to style
[04:17] that
[04:18] plugin inside of the editor. I'm hoping
[04:20] that I can start testing some of these
[04:21] new changes
[04:23] with the iframe inclusion there for the
[04:25] editor. So, that might make my life and
[04:27] probably developers who are much better
[04:29] than me style their stuff inside the
[04:31] editor. WordPress 7 has a little bit
[04:34] more of the block visibility controls
[04:37] for hiding or showing certain blocks on
[04:40] mobile, tablet, and desktop views. Often
[04:43] times we were using an a separate plugin
[04:46] to do something like that or your theme
[04:48] was doing that with their blocks that
[04:50] were included. So, nice to see this hit
[04:52] core. Developers can now build blocks
[04:54] with just PHP when they need server side
[04:56] rendering stuff only.
[04:58] That's something that I'm super
[04:59] interested in, but I'm sure the
[05:01] developers out there don't want to have
[05:03] to mix and match PHP with JavaScript to
[05:06] do things that they can just do with PHP
[05:08] will now be able to do that. That's a
[05:09] welcome change I'm sure for many of you
[05:11] out there. Something that's also
[05:13] building the future of the new
[05:16] visualization of the WordPress admin and
[05:18] content and data and features inside of
[05:20] the admin and for other plugins is the
[05:23] data views and data forms experience.
[05:26] Now, it's just getting better and
[05:28] better. Still not widespread adoption
[05:31] yet. This, in my opinion, is the
[05:33] foundation to what a new admin
[05:34] experience might look like, especially
[05:36] in a world where we can modify the admin
[05:39] and mix and match things like blocks
[05:42] of Gutenberg, but you should be doing
[05:43] that in the admin. These two features
[05:46] play a pivotal role or these two
[05:48] experiences play a pivotal role and um
[05:50] it's always good to see them continuing
[05:52] to update that. We're just waiting for
[05:54] that total revamp of the admin.
[05:57] Accessibility has been updated as well.
[06:00] Uh host of different things under
[06:01] accessibility, which is always welcomed
[06:03] and then there's a but wait there's more
[06:05] section on the make post which
[06:07] introduces more of these WordPress
[06:09] features as a field guide. I'll
[06:11] definitely link that up below. If your
[06:13] host has not updated yet to WordPress 7,
[06:16] your website to WordPress 7, um check
[06:18] out some of these these things in the
[06:20] playground. You go to
[06:21] playground.wordpress.net,
[06:22] you can actually start playing with some
[06:24] of the WordPress 7 stuff before your
[06:26] site updates and if you have a web
[06:28] hosting uh company that has staging
[06:30] environments, which 99.9% of them should
[06:33] these days, run your website in a
[06:35] staging environment, see how it reacts
[06:38] and see how it changes to WordPress 7.
[06:39] Should've been already testing this
[06:40] already. Today's the last day uh until
[06:43] maybe hosts start rolling the stuff out.
[06:45] So, do that. Check it out. Make sure
[06:46] everything runs uh but playground's
[06:48] always a great place to test future
[06:50] versions and iterations of WordPress.
