Transcript: Tom Merritt Start with what you need to know with the big story. Tuesday was the day for Apple to make its big old product announcement. And of course, Jason and I talked about it yesterday. Today is the day when we tell everybody the stuff that they didn't say in the big announcement and what existing Apple device owners are going to get, because you don't have to buy a new Thing to get some new stuff. First of all, you get a new operating system. Yeah, iOS 26, iPad OS 26, watch OS 26, Mac OS 26, and Vision OS 26 will all arrive Monday, September 15th, as is tradition earlier in the week before the new phones ship. So you get the operating system before the new phones arrive. New phones will of course arrive with iOS 26 pre-installed. Interestingly, you may have noticed I didn't say tvOS 26, which makes a lot of folks think there will definitely be a second fall announcement, as Apple often does, that will include A new Apple TV. And so they're holding the operating system update for that. I haven't had a new Apple TV in like, what, four years or something, I think? Sarah Lane Yeah, the 4K is the last model. Tom Merritt Yeah, we're due. You'll want to go to Engadget or somewhere like that if you really want to be sure whether your device is compatible with these new operating systems. The short version is Apple Watch Series 6 and later, as well as the second gen Apple Watch SE, all the Apple Watch Ultra models, most Macs from 2020 or later, as well as the 2019 Mac Pro and The 16-inch MacBook Pro from 2019. And then iPad models are kind of hard to summarize. They're all over the place, like first-gen, third-gen things. So if it's a recent iPad, you're probably good. Otherwise, go look it up. Sarah Lane The only thing that I would really say, and we had a really fun live stream when we were watching the event yesterday, but my real disappointment wasn't so much like, oh, they didn't give Me the iPhone that I wanted. In fact, the iPhone Air is – I'm excited about that even though I don't need a new iPhone. But yeah, the tvOS and Apple TVs in general, because I have a couple in my house and I have for some time, I was hoping to hear something about that. What I would love is for there to be another announcement later on, but tvOS by itself feels like a thin announcement, unless it's just something that Apple's been doing the last couple Of years where they just say like, here's the deal. Tom Merritt Now we'll get, if we get a second announcement, I think you're right. We'll get more than just the Apple TV. Um, I don't know if that'll be a new laptop, new iPad. There's lots of rumors out there. Maybe we finally get the HomePod update that people were talking about. That was rumored. Yeah. No HomePod announcement at all. Sarah Lane Nothing even mentioned about anything, you know, AppleKit really. Tom Merritt They could do an Apple smart home focused announcement with a HomePod, Apple TV, maybe some AirTags. Sarah Lane Yeah. And announce maybe a new series on Apple TV+. Tom Merritt The one that follows you, maybe that finally gets announced or something. Sarah Lane What, the Amazon Astro? Tom Merritt No, not the Rolly robot. Remember, there's the one from Apple that sits in one place, but it follows you around. Sarah Lane It's yeah you you mount it and it it uh yeah it's the ipad that is also your home system the ipad that's always watching you that's what we all want a few other bits and pieces that weren't Tom Merritt In the main announcement the a19 pro chip in the iphone air only is listed as a five core g unlike the one in the iPhone Pro, which has a six-core GPU. So that likely means they disabled a core, aka binned it in the air, probably to save battery life. If you liked the live translation feature of the AirPods Pro 3, good news. It will also work on the AirPods 4, the regular old AirPods 4, and the AirPods Pro 2. Yay! Just need to make sure you update the firmware. Sarah Lane That excites me, because I was like, that's cool. I don't really need it, because I'm not going to buy a new pair of AirPods. But I've got the Pro 2, and this is a situation where I don't need it every day, but I can think of scenarios where, you meet somebody on vacation and your friends, and this just would make Everything so much easier. Tom Merritt Yeah. And I think Terrence was the one who noticed the way they said AirPods Pro 3. He's like, is that going to work on the old ones? And the answer is yes. That hypertension alert will also work on the Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 or later watches. So as a firmware update, basically you need the S9 chip or later. The Sleep Score appears to be just an OS update because the Sleep Score will work on Series 6 watches and later, although it's going to ruin your battery life for a Series 6. It'll also work on the second gen SE. Apple extended the free satellite service for one more year. IPhone 16 users were going to keep getting it free for another year, but now iPhone 14 and 15 users will get another year of free satellite service. That means the iPhone 14 people are getting years and years of this stuff. And Apple's Beats launched a new case for, or actually several new cases for the new iPhones, one of which has a removable lanyard that you can use as a kickstand, which was kind of nifty. That one's 59 bucks. Sarah Lane That's an expensive lanyard, but... Tom Merritt Well, you get the case too, right? Sarah Lane And the kickstand. It's Apple off. Three in one. Yeah. Tom Merritt All the models in the new line of iPhone 17 have memory integrity enforcement. This is built on the enhanced memory tagging extension. If that makes sense to you, that's good news. If it doesn't, all you need to know is it makes it harder for spyware makers like Pegasus to take advantage of memory leaks and hack your phone. This is similar to what Windows 11 does to prevent speculative execution attacks and also takes advantage of ARM's MTE, which Android also takes advantage of for memory security. Apple says that it is on by default. And even though older chips don't have it built into the chip the way the iPhone 17 does, it will still be available and offer some protections on older phones. And in Apple's words, has virtually zero CPU cost. And in Apple's words, has virtually zero CPU cost. So you shouldn't see a performance hit. Sarah Lane Well, that's gotta be good news for some folks. On by default, I don't really see a great need to turn it off, but it's nice that you have an option. Tom Merritt Yeah, you don't have to go at it, which these things are really meant for very sophisticated users, like journalists or whistleblowers and stuff. And so sometimes they're like, yeah, this advanced protection could be a performance hit. You have to ask to turn on certain things. This one you don't, because they're basically like, it's not going to hurt the performance. Transcript: Sarah Lane Reddit will no longer show you how many people are subscribed to a subreddit community. The number has been replaced by how many visitors in the subreddit had in the last week, based on a rolling 28-day average, as well as the number of posts or comments made in the past seven Days. Reddit says this is supposed to emphasize active participation over passive membership. The new metric will be used to limit how many communities a moderator can oversee to a maximum of five communities that have more than 100,000 regular visitors. The actual subscriber count will still be available in the moderator's insights tab. So it's not going away. It's just not really visible to the community itself. Thanks to Motang, who posted this on our DTNAS subreddit. Tom Merritt Yeah, thereby adding to the active participation comment count. Sarah Lane To somebody who has 2 million followers on X or something like that. It's like, how engaged is the community? That number doesn't tell you much. And a subreddit is no different. It's like, maybe a lot of people used to be active and aren't anymore. What's important for a lot of folks, especially if you're getting people who are discovering a subreddit for the first time, it's like, how active are we here? Who's talking? Who am I going to engage with? And so I think this is smart on Reddit's part. Tom Merritt Yeah, it makes practical sense in being able to make sure moderators don't get overloaded by having an actual account that is reflective of activity, like you say. And it's also interesting to me to know like, oh, I know we have 20,000 subscribers or whatever it is. I don't even remember what it is off the top of the hand, but how many of those are actually here? Well, now I can see. I can see kind of how many are posting just based on the post, right? But now I can see like, oh, but there's a lot of people still reading it. So that's important. Sarah Lane I think also advertisers are going to be very interested by this kind of data, you know, instead of, you know, well, this community has a million people in it. Well, but 15 people post regularly. Transcript: Tom Merritt Definitely. Speaking of Reddit, they are part of a group of publishers that also include Yahoo, Medium, Quora, and People Inc., the magazine makers, that announced support for a standard called RSL, or Really Simple Licensing. It's sort of inspired by RSS, Really Simple Syndication. RSL lets content creators enforce licensing terms on data crawlers. RSL, in fact, works on top of the robots.txt file, which also does that. But robots.txt can basically say yes or no. You are allowed to crawl this site. You are not allowed to crawl this site. And the crawlers don't have to honor it. It's there as a thing for them to look at and decide if they want to play along. RSL can not only block, but also require licensing and royalty terms to be honored if you want to crawl the site. It can work not just on websites, but on online books, videos, and training data sets. It was developed by the RSL Collective, which is headed by Eckert Walther, who worked at Netscape when they developed RDF, which eventually evolved with Walther's help into RSS, along With former Ask.com CEO Doug Leeds. Those are the folks behind the RSL Collective. RSL supports multiple licenses, so you can have a free license that says, hey, you can crawl this at no charge. You can require a subscription, like anybody who's subscribing to crawling your site can crawl it. You can have them pay per crawl. Every time you want to crawl my site, you got to pay me. Or pay per inference. That last one requires a company to pay every time a crawled piece of data is used in an answer by a chat bot. So if they link to your website, for example. A CDN called Fastly is required to be plugged into your site to administer the license scheme and do the bouncing of the bots, admitting them or not. You can still use RSL without it, but there's no way to force the bots off unless you're using Fastly. That's similar to how Cloudflare's system works. And some people are suspecting Cloudflare might sign up for this. Sites would have to implement RSL and sign up for Fastly. In the meantime, if you want to make the entire scheme effective, RSL is free to implement and you can sign up to learn more. Although I couldn't, in the short amount of time I spent there, find the instructions, but you can sign up to learn more at rslcollective.org. Sarah Lane This sounds like a great idea in theory. Instead of you can either crawl or you can't crawl, you know, which is the robots.txt, this would be... And here are the ways that if you do decide to crawl, we think this would be okay. This is what we need from you. And yes, maybe it's per crawl, Maybe it's some blanket license type thing. Of course, my pessimistic version is, well, if you can just get around this, then what's the point? Yeah. Tom Merritt And that's why you need the fastly part of this. And that's why I was a little disappointed that it wasn't more obvious how to get this rolling on my site, especially because it's got big publishers behind it. Like I should have been taken when I registered right to a page that says, here's what you need to do. Here's the documentation. I'm sure that exists, but it was not immediately obvious. So I have a lot of questions of like, do I have to pay fastly in order to do the bouncing? Because yeah, that could pay for itself if I've got enough people wanting to crawl my site. But it's not guaranteed and that's an impediment. Transcript: Sarah Lane Yeah. Well, as promised, just yesterday in 2021, Spotify is launching lossless music streaming support. Only took a few years, but hey, it's here. If you pay for a premium account, you can stream almost all music up to 24-bit, 44.1, kilohertz, FLIC quality. Access has begun in 12 countries, with 50 countries in total getting the feature by the end of October. You'll get a notification when it comes to you, if obviously you're a premium subscriber, and you can then enable it in settings on each device that you want it. It'll work over Wi-Fi with Spotify Connect, not over Bluetooth because of bandwidth constraints. So Wi-Fi only for now. Amazon launched lossless audio back in 2019. Apple Music in 2021. Transcript: Tom Merritt Yeah, I know a lot of people who have been dying for this. Not literally, but really, really excited. Really wanting it. Yeah, yeah, exactly. The U.S. Treasury Department issued guidance on the enforcement of the recently passed no tax on tips law, along with the expected jobs you would think would qualify bartender, waiter, driver. It includes, Sarah, digital content creators. That includes podcasters, social media influencers, and streamers. I'm one of those three. Actually, I have two of those three. Recurring subscription revenue like Patreon and Substack do not count, but any tips or gifts you get, something like on Twitch, where you can do bits or YouTube, you can do super chats, TikTok, et cetera. Those might count. The deduction maximum is $25,000 a year. So if you make more than $25,000 in tips, then above $25,000 is taxable. Transcript: Sarah Lane The information also reports that Microsoft plans to use models from Anthropic for new features in its office apps. Reportedly, Claude was better at certain tasks like creating a PowerPoint presentation. Microsoft is a major investor in OpenAI and has exclusive rights to some usages of its frontier models, but has been in negotiations about changes to that agreement as OpenAI tries To become a fully for-profit company. Tom Merritt Yeah, this broke when I was doing my office hours stream yesterday. And my initial reaction is still my reaction, which is Microsoft would have done this anyway. They want to diversify. And if Claude really is better at PowerPoint presentations, then they're going to want to use that, right? They're going to want to use whatever is best, whether it's their own internal model or one of the frontier models they have exclusive access to or Claude. That doesn't mean they aren't using this as leverage in their negotiations with OpenAI, though. Transcript: Tom Merritt Now, if you're like, hold on, is that good or bad? I'm not up on refresh rates. LCD displays start at 60 hertz, and your really good displays are 120 hertz. So 75 is better than a lot of mid-range phone refresh rates. Most ePaper displays refresh at 10 hertz, the ones where you press a button and it takes a minute to change. That's what we're talking about. Some have gotten close to 60 hertz, but 75 hertz is a new record. The way they did it was to combine standard e-paper panels with an open source FPGA-based display controller, and they were able to make it reach 75 hertz refresh rate on a 13-inch panel With a 1600 by 1200 resolution. They also did it on a smaller panel, which would be easier, a six-inch panel. The controller has local control of pixels. That's one of the ways they're able to do this. So they can flip the pixels as needed rather than the typical way ePaper does it, which is two states. One is static and the other is updating the entire screen at once. The Modos paper monitor and dev kit is now available if you want to crowdfund it on crowd supply and give a little money to the cause. Orders are expected to ship in January, or you can DIY it. The code and the schematics for CasterGlider and the API are open source and available on GitHub. Transcript: Niki Ackermans I always bring you guys something crazy. So if you are a smartwatch fan, you may have noticed that Garmin kind of out of nowhere came out with a horse tracking device called the Blaze. And of course, I wanted to cover this because it's weird, but actually, I think it's really cool. All right. Sarah Lane So what is this tracker? What does it do for someone who has a horse and wants to keep tabs? Niki Ackermans Yeah. It's honestly very close to a smart watch for horses in terms of your activity tracker. It's actually the same look as a Garmin smartwatch, but it goes into a little strap that goes around the horse's tail. I think people are starting to want to corner the market for pet trackers, and you would think cats and dogs would be the first ones to get a device, but it's really hard to measure an animal's Heart rate through their fur. And on the underside of the horse tail, there isn't any fur, so they can directly place this monitor right in that area, as you would with a watch around the wrist. So it's not a kind of 24-7 device. It's a device you put on while you're exercising on the horse. The coolest thing about it is it links to your compatible Garmin watch and you track your workout at the same time as your horse's workout. Because you do get a workout when you're riding on a horse and then you can look at their stats and their health and all that. Okay. Sarah Lane So this is not like, I went to the gym. What did my horse do today? It's something that's designed to be compatible with somebody who is riding a horse and the horse that's being ridden. Niki Ackermans You could sort of do that. You have to be Bluetooth connected to it. So you got to be around when it's on. It does have a 25-hour battery life, but I assume if the horse goes out of range, it'll stop tracking. Sarah Lane And the part about it being under the tail is interesting to me because you would think wouldn't the bridle just be the place that you would put it there's fur so you can't get and it'll Niki Ackermans Be rubbing you need somewhere where it doesn't move and where you can get like it nicely pressed against the direct skin without any hair in the way and that's one of the only spots to do It but actually some of the some equestrians report that they're glad it's not a piece of tack that you have to like put on or take off because people have different kinds of tack that they Put on their horse so um this might tickle some horses though and it might get messy considering the location but it's washable uh so yeah i think it's actually a really smart placement Sarah Lane Now do you have a horse is this something i you can test? Niki Ackermans I do not. I would love to, but I don't have a horse. I want to do a live with it with this, but no, I don't. But Tom mentioned he has a sister who has a horse, so maybe we can get someone to test this out. Sarah Lane I have a friend with a horse. I feel like she would like this. Yeah. Niki Ackermans I feel like if you have a horse, you can afford, by the way, we didn't mention the price tag. It's a $600 horse tracker, but I feel like if you have a horse, you can buy a horse tracker. Um, it measures. So the reason it needs to be on your skin, it measures the heart rate. It also measures skin temperature, stride and gait. So you can say I was galloping for 20 minutes today or whatever you want to measure that for. I, I have a faint idea of what you would want to look at, but you want to check your horse's general condition. It'll also track like the Garmin watches do your recovery after the workout. Um, and yeah, it can also do GPS activities. Um, so if you're doing a trail run instead of something like in a barn, uh, then you can look at that. Sarah Lane This feels like, and again, I do not have a horse. I never have, although boy, would I love one, uh could afford it. And I lived in the country. Niki Ackermans Yeah, not in LA. Sarah Lane But for, for, for folks who have horses, I mean, yes, if you have a farm, your horse might live there, but many horses are boarded and they're looked after by people besides you. And so this would be really, really good data just to be like, you know, what's, what's, what's going on, you know, before I can get there on a Saturday and, you know, hang out with my horse All day. Niki Ackermans And, and you'd have to have the person boarding them, if they're riding them, measure it for you. Cause it has to have like Bluetooth connectivity. So I don't think you can do it distant, but you're, you're right. That could be a really good point. It also says you can use it on multiple horses you can have different profiles um and it has its own app um it it also has something that i think would be really useful it has something called A heat score for riding safety so it'll combine the air temperature with the humidity but i feel like you could just get that from the weather app but i have been in the situation before. I'm like, is it too hot to ride? I don't know. So that's kind of cool. I if I had horse, a horse, and if I had the money, I would jump on this because I love this kind of data stuff. I love constantly checking my not I'm trying not to make this an ad for Garmin, but I think it's really cool. Like not constantly checking my watch and trying to see like, well, what are my stats today? It'd be cool to see. Like, I don't know. I worked out more than my horse on our, on our trail run or something similar. Sarah Lane Well, listen, I mean, no, it's not an ad for Garmin, but you like it, you know, you like, you like, you like the technology, you like the data. It just sounds fun. It's 600 bucks. So again, yes. If you can afford a horse, you could probably afford this. Niki Ackermans That's probably what Garmin was thinking too. Yeah. Transcript: Niki Ackermans I feel like if you have a horse, you can afford, by the way, we didn't mention the price tag.
