- DHH choice of lemons makes for a good analogy; a fruit used in cooking or needing other ingredients to enjoy as a drink. That DHH and 37signals participate in FLOSS below the business and consumer value layers in support of their proprietary products is perfectly great โ their substrate contributions to the commons are huge!
[photomatt](https://twitter.com/photomatt) shares that there is also a lot of unsqueezed juice, โI think itโs fantastic when businesses are built on open source, the WordPress ecosystem is at least 10B+ a year; Automattic and WP Engine are less than 5% of that.โ
But really both are talking about a different type of juice than the one that most interests me. WordPress is as successful as it is not because the code don't smell, but because of its software development approach to human-centered design. FLOSS has not translated to many successes here.
To democratize publishing the main stakeholder for WordPress has always been everybody: the end user, the consumer, the everyday people.
It is for them that trademark exists. Product companies use trademark to defend their brands and user experiences, particularly FLOSS product companies, as this is the one protection they maintain.
I don't see the armchair warriors sharing what this looks like without MM. What I hear is "developers, developers, developers" but that may be because Ballmer was on 60 Minutes this past week.
User experience voices, whether FLOSS or not, are who I've been looking to see what future they're created with or without WP. ([View Tweet](https://twitter.com/d3w01f/status/1848511021381775446))
