- To my friends, followers, and everyone in WordPress, I am sorry this is happening to you. What's happened over the past weeks and is continuing to escalate is not fair to anyone, and you are all suffering for it. ([View Tweet](https://twitter.com/mor10/status/1845210308790354369))

- Sometimes the best we can do is accept that others understand the world differently than we ourselves do.

- Open source governance does not require the visionary leader of the project losing their power. This is a common and bizarre misunderstanding/deliberate framing that prevents an important discourse form taking place. So let's take a moment to actually discuss governance. 1/x ([View Tweet](https://twitter.com/mor10/status/1846237164931371324))
- Because there was already an organizing team putting on a blogger-focused WordCamp Vancouver, we decided to put on a developer-focused event. Originally we called it "WPDevCamp" but after some discussion we landed on "WordCamp:Developers". https://t.co/3oaxQpF8ti ([View Tweet](https://twitter.com/mor10/status/1850668915892035885))
- Back in 2010, I was one of the three organizers of the Vancouver WordPress Meetup Group. At the time we had close to 2000 members and had to wait-list our monthly events because of demand. ([View Tweet](https://twitter.com/mor10/status/1850668912741937584))
- Also, we had The Best Swag including a Banner Pen with a roll-out schedule and a fancy embossed Moleskine-style notebook. https://t.co/jET6gfzHTE

- Go watch the talks from that day. They were awesome, and many are still relevant 13 years later: https://t.co/X2KhZgyUGj ([View Tweet](https://twitter.com/mor10/status/1850668941439295585))
- Later focused events like @PressNomics and @wpcampusorg proved beyond a doubt this sentiment of specialized WordPress events being undesired was not true, yet more than a decade later there is still intense resistance to the idea of specialized WordCamps. ([View Tweet](https://twitter.com/mor10/status/1850668939941962014))
- In the aftermath we and the broader community was told by "WordCamp Central" that future WordCamps would not have a specific focus, because according to them this was not something the community wanted at all. Our evidence to the contrary was ignored. ([View Tweet](https://twitter.com/mor10/status/1850668937962234109))
- The event was a massive hit, with some great talks and a welcoming atmosphere. It proved beyond any doubt that a developer-focused multi-track event was wanted by the community. This talk by Mark Reale still lingers in my mind to this day: https://t.co/vgE9a78y8M ([View Tweet](https://twitter.com/mor10/status/1850668936515231840))
- But the price had to come down to $40. This was a must. So, the person on the phone pulled strings and got us a series of sponsors to cover our venue costs at the last moment, and on the day of, my wife and I wrote personal cheques to hundreds of people refunding them $40. ([View Tweet](https://twitter.com/mor10/status/1850668934489620743))
- After a lengthy argument over the phone where I explained in detail how much the event cost, that I was personally out thousands of $$ even after every ticket was sold, etc, the person acquiesced that this was indeed not an event we could cancel. ([View Tweet](https://twitter.com/mor10/status/1850668933012955629))
- The answer: Rules were introduced late April 2011 - after we created, announced, called for speakers, booked speakers, and booked the venue - stipulating an approval process and promising the events would be cheap - "usually below $40 for a 2-day event" https://t.co/fZxUZh0Nsh ([View Tweet](https://twitter.com/mor10/status/1850668931436192198))
- But again, THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH PRIVATE EQUITY. It's a trademark thing.
There is nothing in any of this that shows me Matt is protecting WordPress or Open Source from the harms of Private Equity.
If there was, I'd be on the wall holding his flag for him. ([View Tweet](https://twitter.com/mor10/status/1852088088216080642))
- For example, if you taught a university class on WordPress site administration, the trademark rules explicitly forbid you from using the word "WordPress" in any marketing. This runs against industry standards and is in my opinion a hindrance to broader WP marketing. ([View Tweet](https://twitter.com/mor10/status/1852088087083671605))
- The WordPress trademark rules have always been a major challenge: Those who follow the rules can't use the name "WordPress" to inform their clients they support it. Those who don't follow the rules are often left alone for a long time. And of course there's .com etc. ([View Tweet](https://twitter.com/mor10/status/1852088085854748983))
- Oh look... the thing I said would happen - enterprise seeing the absolute lunacy the Poet King is enacting in the WordPress Cathedral and questioning the validity of all open source as a result - is happening. I am shocked. https://t.co/rXxN5EWStw ([View Tweet](https://twitter.com/mor10/status/1852901552668672156))
